Not to mention he continues to shine on kickoff depth...that's almost a great defensive play.
I remember years back when the opposition would almost always start at the 35 because the kickoff landed at the 10.

You really need to consider this as a major factor

Umm, the thread went silent 4 days before your post.

I'm not watching the game, the olympics are on. But unless someone comes out and notices his leg got stronger, I still say we could have used competition.
(note- I say someone comes out to say it's stronger, cause I won't notice until week 1 since I think preseason is a complete waste of time for my attention.)

There was nothing new to add the last few days. But after last night's game, I was suprised (actually, not at all) that no one brought this thread back up to mention his 46-yarder.

I dont really care if he comes out and seriously kicks a 100 yard FG, I need consistency. Either be consistently BAD or consistently GOOD. If he cant make kicks with the game on the line and when it really counts, the F him.

But he did hit that 46 yarder last night. That almost makes up for the shank he pulled in the HoF game.

and so far his kickoffs have had great distance. lets just leave well enough alone

That's good to know. That's what I like to hear. This, hopefully, means he's gotten stronger in the offseason.

I didn't see it (obviously), did he barely make it, or did he clear it with plenty of room to spare? (ie: would make it from 52 or more for instance)

I do think that ALL OF US are wanting Suisham to succeed...our team needs it. If the man can start reaching the endzone on kickoffs, and can hit with room to spare on 50+ yard FG's, I'm happy. That's all i'm looking for. His FG% is good. Not extra special, but nothing to release him for either. My biggest beef with him is his leg strength...if that is somehow solved, I'm ecstatic!

His leg looks much better so far. The 46 yard field goal cleared about 1/3 to half way up, and I've been shocked by the kickoffs. Most are going 2 to 5 yards into the endzone, much improved for Suisham!

Suisham has power in his leg this year. My fear is that he will burn out before the season starts having to make every kick in every preseason game and practice.

He's only had 3 chances to kick and I think this season Suisham won't get on the field as much. He'll be fine

Maybe we could sign J.Feley to compete with him. For the vet min of course.:silly:

That may not be a bad idea. For some reason i just don't trust Suisham in pressure situations. Feely is coming off on of his best years. He won't be w/ out a job very long.

Some team is going to give him a contract which will make it impossable for us to bring him in for kicking comp. with Suisham.

exactly. he'll get handed a job somewhere. he's not going to come here to compete with anybody.
I do not think FG% is not a big deal. I do think it is.
We agree on most everything here, and you make valid points. What I will disagree with is the kickoffs. We will kickoff approx 4-6 times a game. If someone is 10 yards shorter than another, that is giving up 40-60 yards per game. I think those yards are important.

All in all, I feel like we agree on most cases.
Thats not always true. If a kicker hits higher shorter kicks they have a little more hang time for coverage to get down field so what maybe lost in distance the coverage team makes up with shorter returns.

You're speaking in theory cause we all know that wasn't suisham. If he has the leg to kick it high and short, then he has the leg to kick it long too. Last year he did neither.

If he gets burned out from kicking in the preseason we seriously need a new kicker.

100% agree. Any kicker that gets burnt out in the preseason is useless and weak. That's what they do for a living, if they can't handle the preseason, how will they handle the regular season and postseason?

The way he's reaching the endzone and appears to have a longer leg, maybe he worked out harder in the offseason to be more valuable to us. (thus the no competition brought in) At this point, I am mildly satisfied that he has developed more power, which is what I was seeking from our kicker.

Yeah, I meant to tell you about that since I know you don't like the preseason very much. He hit a mid 40 yarder with ease and most of his kickoffs are getting to the end zone. No touchbacks that I've seen (I don't think) but they're getting in there.

It's not just kicking in pre-season it's making every kick in training camp.

It still doesn't make much sense.

He's going to have to make all the kicks during the season and in practice as well. Should we worry about that too?

There are plenty of kickers around the league that handle all the kicking duties in the preseason.

That 46 yarder was good from 60. He is definitely born again hard. I may even allow him to be the kicker for my beloved Redskins.

Re: We need competition for Suisham

the guys a specialist. he has been kicking just about his whole life. i think people would be surprised at how little he kicks during the week. and he also knows if his leg does get tired, someone else is waiting for his job. he has done fine, so far. lets look elsewhere for a bitch session
