One question for the mcmullen fans: has he played any special teams?
That will determine a lot in the final wr spots. Mix has been hurt much of training camp, but the coaches know more of what they have in him already. I think Mcmullen has to outperform the others by leaps & bounds to make the team if he's not playing teams.

Can he play teams? I don't know.

Honestly, this is the first time I've heard of Geisinger. But from what you wrote about him, he sounds like a valuable guy. I should also note that Doc Walker (take his word for what it's worth) doesn't believe Wade, or Fabini for that matter, are locks to win the backup OL positions. On the outside looking in, it would seem they have the edge just based on the fact that they are seasoned veterans. But to cut one or both could speak to the renewed sense of going with youth for this franchise -- which I like.

I believe you're right about McMullen asking for a release. Whether we keep 5 or 6 wideouts is immaterial; barring injury, the guys who are stuck with those spots aren't likely to see much action anyway.

Good question -- I don't know either. That's one of those things that's really hard to see if you're only going by what you watch on television. Unless you're at the games, it's impossible to pick out a certain player and analyze him in specific situations. On TV, we can only see the ball carrier. So unless McMullen or any other guy makes a big play for the tackle or makes a key block, the television observer has no earthly idea.

Since he's not making any real noise on special teams, my guess is that McMullen is 'nothing special' in that regard.

I agree that he can't choose his competition. Given his inability to choose his competition, however, he must perform in a manner that reflects his experience. He simply has failed to do so. How well do you think Randle-El or Thrash would be doing against the guys McMullen has been playing against? That's the standard he has to match, I would suggest that, while good, he has not dominated against these guys. That's what he needs to do and that's what he hasn't done.

Some recent comments on Geisinger

Geisinger, 26, who could fill a huge void at backup center, got off the line to make a block 10 yards downfield on the play, and he held the line together making the calls and adjustments in pass protection while working in front of three quarterbacks. (Buffalo registered just one sack.)

"He communicated very well," Zorn said of Geisinger. "There were a couple of miscues. . . . But for the most part he did a great job."

Veteran quarterback Todd Collins said: "Geisinger is doing a good job. He's a smart kid. He lockers right next to me and he has some experience [with Tennessee and on Washington's practice squad] and he's a big body who gives a good snap, which I like. He can make all the calls and knows the offense."

Zorn noted how well the linemen played in space on the screen pass that Ladell Betts turned into an 12-yard touchdown. The point I'm trying to make is that of the wideouts McMullen has competed against for a roster spot, nobody so far has outplayed him. I'm not saying he's a top-tier guy by any means, we're just trying to see who's most likely to win the sixth WR position -- if there is one.

I agree. The big arguement with Mason is he is running against scrubs..which is true..But if someone has talent they have talent..and eventhough its preseason. He is leading the league. Would like to see what looks like after moe RBs have two games under his belt. Even with that. His stats have looked good and he made some good rusn to run out the clock last game nad made some good runs the HOF game also.

I think McMullen is making the team because of this experieince in the WCO and I think he is better than Mix and the rest of the WRs. Plus he can contribute right away which is needed since our two rooks have been out andmissing valuable practice.

Something tells me both of them are making the team.

I could make a good list here, but I am just going to put down the guy I want to see off the team the most... Derek Devine.

All Devine is doing is taking away reps from Colt Brennan. I know Devine hasn't thrown much, but when he has he hasn't shown anything special. I know it's only a matter of time until he is cut but I wish they would do it sooner so that Colt can get more reps.

The more I see of Geisinger, the more I think he will make the team. He's not a threat to Rabach's job, but that might be a positive. I also think that the team will keep 25 offensive players and 25 defensive players, I think it's a compromise that Zorn and Blache will make, since both coaches will want to keep 26 guys on their side of the ball. Thusly, the Redskins start the year (but not finish the year) with only 5 WRs.

i like that list, i'd probably toss tryon and boschetti for useful guys... wade/mcmullen/fox/campbell etc maybe... they haven't kept 10 DL in the last like 5-6 years i don't believe, and while they normally go 4 DE 5 DT, evans is basically a DT now.

we also have practice squad to hold some of the younger guys - OL/LB/CB depth among other things.

I think you are dead on with everything, but Boscetti and Fincher. I think Wilson will make it based on Evans being able to play tackle. I hate that you only kept five recievers, and even though I heard Zorn saying they will probably keep six, I still think your right. It is the only way I see them keeping Mason. As for Fincher, I think he is competing for the sixth spot, with Sinclair. I just heard Zorn saying how good Carey has been playing Defensive Linbacker, as opposed to just special teams.

No way is Evans on the bubble. Demetric is to versatile not to make the cut. He can move inside and play tackle, he's strong against the run, he has the most experience in the system, and he leaves the option open for us to employ a bunch of different packages due to his versatility, and lets not forget he can drop back into coverage as well.

hmmmm...i think we should tried to trade away one of our Rbs, as someone mentioned earlier to make way for Mason. Mason is perhaps oour truest Running back on this team, and he has earned his keep. There would be no way i would even put him on the practice squad, because if he continues to be this good another team ineed of Rb could sign him. That would be a big loss for us in my eyes. And i think McMullen so far has beatean Mann for the 6th reciver spot, he looked perdy dange good, eve it is against third and fourth stringers.

Keep 5 , not 6 WR's . I look at it this way , if our OL can get Portis to avg. 4.4 / 4.7 yds per carry , we win this year . If we have to throw , we are 8-8 . I doubt that our 6th WR would see any playing time ,,, if we have to get our # 5 on the field , we're in trouble . Im hoping to keep the young DL/OL and Mason .That 7th rd pick DE R. Jackson looks good , maybe E. James goes on IR ? SMASH MOUTH FOOTBALL !

Well with, Jackson, James, Wilson, Taylor, Evans, and Carter, I think that Jackson, Evans and Wilson are the possible cuts. They can only keep two of them. I understand that Evans is known as a run stuffer and plays tackle, but maybe they see more upside in Wilson and Jackson. I think that, which DE's to keep will be one of the toughest decisions. As far as I am concerned, if the season started today, Jackson makes the team. That leaves Wilson and Evans as two guys that have done little in preseason.

Making a cut at this position is going to be tough. How is the PUP list work? Maybe they can put James in there?

Rob Jackson is not going to make it over Evans, because Rob Jackson is a candidate for the practice squad. To me it comes down to Rob Jackson vs. Chris Wilson. We all know what Chris Wilson can do, he's a situational rusher. Jackson has looked really good in preseason with 3tcks 2scks and 1ff. If Wilson makes it over Jackson, Jackson can easily be placed on the PS, but if Jackson makes it over Wilson, Wilson will be gone because I don't think he's eligible for the PS.

I think they are both eligible for the practice squad, Wilson was considered a rookie last year. My opinion is neither one will make it on the practice squad. Jackson has done to much this year and Wilson did to much last year.

James was on the PUP list where I thought they would keep him, but they removed him from that list last week. I thought they would just keep him there, so they could keep more DE's, in the event of an injury. But it looks like they intend to play him next week and keep him on the active roster.

James Activated; Huntley Released

Defensive end Erasmus James has passed his physical and will be activated from the physically unable to perform list.
That means someone had to go and that someone is Kevin Huntley, a veteran defensive end who had failed to move up the depth chart. He's a DC area guy who had spent some time with Atlanta, but after the Jason Taylor trade and with James getting healthy, Huntley was expendable.
Back at practice (players in shells and shorts) this morning are LaRon Landry, Rock Cartwright, James, Devin Thomas and Chris Horton. Vernon Fox is back after missing Saturday's game for personal reasons.
Not practicing are H.B. Blades, Shawn Springs, Malcolm Kelly, Stephon Heyer, and Anthony Mix.
Both Todd Yoder or Lorenzo Alexander have been excused from practice, for reasons to be determined.

Seriously, after showing nothing in the first two games except how well he jogs after guys he's given up big plays to. What happens on Clowney's big reception & Kellen Clemens' only big play of the night? Sure enough, here comes Justin Tryon trotting after him. Well, at least, he put a big hit on him. It's still not enough to stay on the team though. Justin Tryon, please go and give us back our fourth round pick.

Matterral Richardson is looking better. He can stay.

wilson's probably the cut at DE. he's just a worse version of a guy we've already got (taylor, carter, james).

evans is definitely staying, and boschetti made a REAL push last game to be relevant (amazing game by him actually).

crummey also showed something, and justin hamilton, even though i wrote him off, looked better than fox last night. i'm pretty sure we keep moore and horton with landry and doughty, but there's a good chance we keep a 5th safety on the PS and a slim chance for the actual roster.

mcmullen had some good and bad moments. none of the other WRs really stood out.

i'm pretty sure mann and devine suck... like, really suck.

I stated earlier that I thought Geisinger was going to make the team, and after listening to Zorns press confrence yesterday, he all but confirmed that. I think that settles the offensive line situation, with Heyer, Rienhart, Fabini, and Geislinger. Unless they keep ten somehow, which I doubt.

I just read JLC's article today and he says Geisinger makes it also.

I thought for the last 2 years they would get some guys in that would take D. Evans' spot, but he just continues to stick. If JLC is correct, he will be used a lot in the nickel package as a DT, essentially taking Daniels' place.

The only way I see Wilson staying is if they count Evans as a DT & cut Boschetti, another guy that manages to make it every year. I'd like to see Wilson make it, I fear he could become another Chris Clemons if they let him go.

You have to look at what player helps your team the most

An everydown player will stick way before a situational down player will(wilson) we as redskin fans are looking at these players way better than they are. The fact is ,every team has to make these hard decisions and everyone has to make cuts and its not like all the other teams are going to be scooping up mad players on everyone PS. There is going to be good players on PS's all over the league. We dont really need wilson anymore, becuase we have Taylor and James, and I think he is as good as gone. I think wecan stick him on the PS though
