Like I said, empathy is important - but it's one important trait amongst many.

Obama offered no other criteria (at least in that quote) and leads you to believe that his judge appointments will be based solely on whether the judge is empathetic or not.

Empathy is important, without a doubt. I would argue, though, that while it's important, it's certainly not THE most important or the only criteria by which a judge ought to be measured.
And the most important criterion would be?
I just think it's interesting that you mention your frustrations with Obama in passing while still voting for him, by the same token you mention where you agree with McCain in passing while focusing on his "incompetence"

I mean, in my opinion, the minute you wrote your the Republican base is all about guns, greeds, gays and God reminds you of an odious tampon I sort of figured your posts moving forward would be as balanced as Buster's or 70Chip's. Which honestly let me down.

Oh well, you're still cool in my book. Just disappointed with the shift in your political threads to what strikes me almost as one-sided anger
If it seems it's in passing, well, my beef with Obama is roast beef thin while my beef with McCain is meatloaf with all the fixing thick.

Re: obama informercial gameday thread

I just can't believe that the American people are more then willing to give complete control of the government to a party after the debacle with the Republicans earlier in the decade. I mean what are the Democrats going to do better without someone to keep them in check? The only check they have is in 2010 when the next round of elections is set to be held.

Right now with what I'm hearing about congress and Iraq being almost over I would want McCain to win. We can't give a party complete control over the government it's political suicide but most voters seem to be Bret Farve esque when it comes to making decisions. They think that since the Republicans were in office when all this happened then putting the Democrats in office will fix everything. It's like "oh we just elected the wrong party."

Power corrupts; Absolute power corrupts absolutely

In truth I would like to get rid of the Republicans and Democrats but that doesn't seem to be a very viable option.

Another thing about Obama, I know this is conservative rhetoric, but him and his party can't get his story straight when it comes to his tax cuts ($250k, $200k, $150k) and by nature politicians don't keep promises once they get elected into office (*cough* Bush, modest foreign policy*cough*) . I mean at the very least we had the Bush tax cuts extending to 2010 but with absolute power in the government the Democrats will be able to repeal them and create a tax code that probably isn't very beneficial to a struggling economy. In fact the only thing in the way of Obamas massive spending plan is the recession and the bailout, but if I'm not mistaken Clinton raised taxes on his 35th day in office after making similar promises during his campaign.

The funny thing is I like Obama. I think he can be a great leader, in some ways he'll definatley help with the countries image over in Europe and the rest of the world, but some of his proposals are on the extreme side (ie his desire for a spending spree during a recession) and without someone to keep him in check I fear the worst. With that said I don't believe he's a socialist just like I don't believe John McCain is the huge war mongerer people make him out to be.

By the way this is propoganda from both sides. Obama isn't getting rid of capitalism anytime soon and the ironic thing is socialist scoff at the idea of Obama being a "true" socialist or even a semi "socialist." McCain on the other hand might be more apt to fight but his dedication to Iraq before everything calmed down as of late was mainly because he doesn't want to have to go back (think Afghan-Soviet conflict and Japan after WWII). McCain knows what it's like on the front lines, he understands the horrors of war and he doesn't take pride in knowing that soliders are dying. Look either way we're still going to Afghanistan but at least Iraq is almost behind us.

Also for the record my political views are libertarian.

dirt, for the most part, i agree. but after the G.O.P had 6 years of totally screwing up Washington, im willing to give the Dem's a chance to see if they can get anything done. because of the divide between the parties, a republican congress would get nothing but grid lock. this will be the first time, in a long time, i vote strictly party

Obama has talked several times about brother helping brother but I guess he does not think of his Aunt as one of his brothers or he wants the tax payers to help out his Aunt (his form of brother helping brother). He also wants us to believe that he did not know she has been illegaly living in the US for 4 years? OK. This is his Aunt that he talked about in his first book he wrote.

The sad part is that Obama says that we as a nation have left people behind and now he is going to help them. Then he does that info thing and shows use these families left behind having trouble. Then he touts one of our biggest problems is that brothers are not helping brothers. Now we find out he has let this happen to his own family while he made something like 4 million last year.

How did he let this happen exactly? Is he responsible for the actions of all of his family members? Is he supposed to financially support everyone in his family? I thought you weren't in favor of socialism?

Apparently this Aunt BS is now being included in those brilliant robocalls going out. Pretty tasteless, but nothing new I guess.

I don't know. After theis election, either the party will decide it has to be an extreme right party or people like Crist, Romney (pre-campaign), McCain (pre-campaign), Bloomberg, Powell, Snowe, even Lieberman, Smootsmack, FRPLG will take the party back and we'll see Romney/Powell 2012!!!!

Its not socialism when its FAMILY or CHARITY. No he is not responsible but he thinks we as tax payers are responsible. This is the Aunt he said he loved so much in his book and he does have the financial means to help her.

What did he say about her in his book exactly?

Reports say she is his father's half sister, and I haven't seen anything that says that Obama was particularly close to her.

So what if his aunt is here illegally? There roughly 12 million of them. What is the expectations here? He should take responsibility for her being here illegally? He should or already does support her financial to be here? If you're going after him go after him for his illegal immigration policy in which he is for eventually giving illegal aliens residency (something McCain was for before he was against).

That's what happens when you cry wolf too many times.

It is a shame because coming into this election I'm sure many thought this finally might be an election that focused on the real issues and kept the negative campainging to a minimum. Personally I really have been surprised that McCain has taken the route that he has, whether it was all his choice or not isn't really relevant. It is what it is, and I think it's one of the main factors that is going to cost him the election.
But when McCain's brother calls the police it's ok to ridicule that.
I never said McCain was responsible for his brother's actions as some seem to be saying with Obama and his Aunt, the simple point was his brother was an a-hole for doing what he did. And it would have been news no matter who made that call.

saden1 11-03-2008 12:29 PM

Re: obama informercial gameday thread

Wait, didn't McCain's brother say "I'm involved in a very important family political project" on his voice mail? He is part of the McCain campaign in a very negative way (i.e. No. VA is communist country) therefore he's fair game, even more so with his total dickishness to the 911 operator.

I don't even know how Obama's aunt being an illegal immigrant is on equal footing to the 911 call.

SmootSmack 11-03-2008 12:41 PM

I don't hold Obama responsible for his aunt, or his half-brother or any one in his family. Yet, ironically, I'm being asked to hold him responsible for leading the country for the next four years.

Are you saying that the MCCain camp is sending out these robocalls?

I could not find anything on their relation only that she came here 9 years ago invited by Obama and he has had comunication with her. What I first saw is that she helped raise his father but that might not make sense because of her age. Trying to do a serch really gives nothing more on her but she did attend his swearing in back in 2005.

I sware if one more actor tells me who to vote for I'm gonna pop (Matthew Broderick being the latest). Now I understand why actors tend to be democrats, as being an actor or writer usually means waiting tables at some point and a party that favors welfare and handouts is definately more appealing for an industry with that type of infastructure. However I wish that someone would admit point blank that the reason these celebrities are mindlesly endorsing Democrats is because it favors their industry not because they're great political analysts and as most of you know I hate people that mindlessly endorse a party (Crazy Evangelicals for Republicans just to be fair).

I don't know maybe I'm on edge because I don't know what we're going to get from either canidate. I mean if McCain gets elected we get a hot vice president and if Obama gets elected we get the coolest president ever so on that front it's a win win.
