ok, then can us skins fans agree on one thing. if Campbell doesn't step up to be what we all would like him to be, then its pretty much over for him?

I would say if there isn't some improvement next year (His contract year I believe) than the FO would come to the conclusion that he isn't the QB we need. But this offense as a whole needs to improve to get more wins. |

'09 will definitely be a do or die year for him. If he's successful and the team is successful he'll get extended. If he's not more productive (I argue that he's a good QB now, but the production isn't there yet) then he and Zorn will be gone and Cowher/Shanahan/Holmgren will be starting from scratch with a new signal caller. |

2009 should be a make or break year for Cerrato (along with Scott Campbell and Morocco Brown), Zorn, and Campbell. |

I think Campbell is going to have a long career in the NFL. He's proven that he can play mistake-free football and not hurt his team. I think the question is whether he's going to be like Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson, Charlie Batch, David Carr, Byron Leftwich, Brian Griese - players who had some success as starters (even Super Bowls winners in the case of Dilfer and Johnson), but ended up being solid backups. or will he be a bonafied starter througout his career? Fair or not, QBs are judged on wins and losses more than stats. 1st round picks like Campbell seem to get their shot for 2-4 years, but if they don't win, regardless of the situation (poor O line, poor receivers, etc.), they end up being elegated to the bench, usually replaced by the next "up and comer". Once there, it's hard to earn another starting gig. I think we'll find out what kind of career Campbell will have next year. |
Re: Observation on Campbell
Anybody else notice that the people who have criticised Campbell on this thread are quite happy for others to come on and defend him, yet the defenders quickly resort to insults and ridiculous accusations of racism when anybody disagrees with them?
Strange that. |

It's kind of hard to have a debate when all the Campbell haters have baseless arguments like "I just don't see it," or "JC is just not an NFL QB," and then they proceed to ignore all the valid expert analysis and articles to the contrary. And in response to what Davy said about insults/racism... Umm what? One person brought up the suggestion of racism, and it was pretty much shot down by everyone. I'm not going through and reading every anti-Campbell post around here, but I haven't really heard any insults. The funny thing is, all the Campbell haters are just getting pwned left and right!! "He holds it too long, he's not accurate, I just don't see it," blah blah blah. JC supporters here are citing multiple credible sources stating the exact opposite over and over. It's funny to me. What's so lame to me is we finally have a QB with a great chance to be an upper echelon player, something the Skins have lacked at QB since Mark friggin Rypien, yet he's still getting ripped. When did we get so greedy? |
Comparing apples and oranges.
Look i like Matt Ryan but put Campbell on the Falcons and IMO you would get similiar if not better production then Ryan. Did you stop to compare their situations? Matt Ryan has a veteran OC and playcaller in Mike Mularkey. Mularkey runs a vertical play-action heavy passing attack, as opposed to JC who is in the 1st year of the WCO which takes at 3 years to master JC has a 1st time playcaller Zorn and a 1st time OC Sherman Smith (who is new to the WCO himself.) Matt Ryan has been only been sacked 17 times he's the 8th least sacked QB in the NFL. Campbell has been sacked 38 times tied for 4th most. Falcons have the #2 ranked rushing offense in the NFL which drives their play-action heavy passing attack. Redskins have the 8th ranked rushing offense but the WCO doesn't feature alot of play-action. Having Mike Mularkey on staff is IMHO the number one reason for Ryan's success. Mike Mularkey comes to the Falcons with a vast amount of coaching and playing experience in the NFL, which includes two years as a Head Coach (Buffalo Bills) and two stints as an Offensive Coordinator — one with the Pittsburgh Steelers (2001–2003), and the other with the Miami Dolphins (2006). He also forged a successfull playing career that spanned nine years in the League as a tight end for the Minnesota Vikings (1983–1988) and Pittsburgh Steelers (1989–1991). Atlanta Falcons | People | Mike Mularkey *Also they have a fulltime QB coach in Bill Musgrave. Zorn is JC's QB coach which is great, but Zorn is also the HC and therefore can't give JC fulltime attention therefore Zorn relies on 1st time NFL assistant Chris Meidt (Div. Look at the numbers: Jason Campbell WAS QB 315 506 62.3 31.6 3,245 6.4 202.8 13 6 162 32.0 67T 34 3 38 84.3 And if you can't see it in the numbers listen to the experts: Jason Campbell - Audio - ESPN ESPN Ron Jaworski was considering JC for league MVP during the 1st half of the season. Yet, despite all this: Instead of saying JC isn't good. Just say the truth. Despite how good JC is.... You don't like him.
Last time I checked they dont give MVPs for 8 games. I bet Jaws wouldnt consider him anywhere near MVP now (especially since P. That's like the 10th time you've referenced ONE comment by a 70 something year old ex-QB. Matter of fact, that is THE ONLY reference to anything that even resembles an expert that any Campbell hater anywhere on this board has used. And frankly I don't really consider Sonny much of an expert at this stage. Great man, great Redskin, but not a top notch analyst by any means. A predictable response. The first part is wildly inaccurate. Nobody hates Campbell. We would all love to see him become an elite QB and remain here for the rest of his career. The second part is juvenile in the extreme. |

A lineman may be able to switch line assignments before the snap but not go through progressions. Going through your progressions means not targeting one receiver but looking to different receivers to see who the best option is. You progress from one receiver to the next. At least that's my understanding of it. I'm pretty sure even old Sonny would know this. I don't know how you train a lineman to do that. |

Strange that.
As the guy who brought up the race issue I just want to point out why . I gone through countless Anti Campbell threads and other posters have said all I have come across is : "I am not sold on him", "he is inaccurate", "he is a turnover machine" (- Which made me laugh) "He holds onto the ball too long","he is slow", "too laid back", "I just don't like him" etc etc . Yes I would like to see more from him but what I have seen, keeping the team in games, bringing us from behind, making gutsy calls plays and year on year improvements, willingness to put the time in the film room and training ground is something I like to see from the QB . If someone, anyone could give me concrete reasons why Campbell should not at least be given a chance to be the Redskins QB of the future other than jut a "feeling" or a stereotype I would be glad to debate it with them . I am not a reverse bigot, I think anyone should make their way in the world based on merit, it shouldn't matter about race religion sexual preference or anything else . The problem is the world isn't like that and these things do make a difference. I wasn't isolating anyone and calling them a racist . I am not using it as an insult, if you see it like that then maybe that is your problem not mine . People judge others, sometimes subconsciously sometimes because they choose to . I think it is naive to think every single anti Campbell comment is based soley on his on field production and not on the stereotype of black athletes some people hold . |

I think it is naive to think every single anti Campbell comment is based soley on his on field production and not on the stereotype of black athletes some people hold .
Some fans refuse to see any of Campbell's merits. Despite the actual numbers he's put up and praise from current NFL experts. They down play any of Campbell strengths in order to level dubious claims that he lacks some intangible 'it' factor and therefore isn't good. I'm sure their might be some left over stereotypes about black quarterbacks that may be behind some peoples opinions of Campbell. There was a time when many black QBs had a hard road to the NFL as a QB and many switched from QB to another position like DB when coming into the league. (e.g. Tony Dungy) Dungy was recruited by University of Minnesota coach Cal Stoll and played for the Golden Gophers from 1973 to 1976. He entered the starting lineup as a quarterback during his freshman year and after playing for four years finished as Minnesota's career leader in pass attempts (576), completions (274), touchdown passes (25), and passing yards (3,577).[5] He also finished fourth in career total offense in the Big Ten Conference. He received Minnesota's Most Valuable Player award twice.[5] But based on the level of the arguements going on in this thread i thought this wouldn't be the place to have this discussion. But, you're right, it is naive to think that race/stereotypes about black QB may not have a role in how some fans view Campbell's performance. I just thought it was understood. |

There is little concrete evidence race is an issue I only suggested it might be an issue but there is plenty of evidence to suggest people are using Jasons colour as a reason to profile him as either slow or inaccurate . Is Eli Manning inaccurate, how about Ben Rothlesberger or Tony Romo ? How about Kerry Collins, Kyle Orton, jake Dellhomme ? This year is the first time Eli has completed more than 60% of his passes ever in his career yet Campbell who threw more and completed more passes is labled the inaccurate one, how is that right ? You would think if he was slow and telegraphed his passes was slow on his release and locked onto one reciever then NFL quality DBs would feast upon him, yet we played the 1,2,3,5 and 7th ranked pass defenses, we played teams which ranked 1,2,7,9 and 14th in team inteceptions, sometimes more than once, this season yet Campbell comes out of the season with only 6 interceptions ... How do those facts gel ? If he is slow and telegraphs all his passes and cannot read defenses . |
