Found this on Maualuga also. Apparently he might be at risk for becoming an alcoholic if he isn't one already.

[I]Football is clearly very important to him, and he has endearingly been described as a “war daddy” by evaluators, but questions remain about his maturity, accountability, trustworthiness, intelligence and ability to responsibly handle alcohol. His coaches publicly have contended that he has matured greatly, but some of his actions have continued to suggest otherwise. One executive said he had positioned Maualuga just far enough down in the first round so that he would not be considered with the team’s first pick, hoping he would be gone by the time the second pick came around. Another evaluator said he did not envision Maualuga’s position on his team’s draft board being altered based on his character but, when pressed as to whether he would draft Maualuga in the top 10, said the pick would be “too scary.”

[/I]Crazy the way information is these days. Hell in the 70's and 80's it probably would have taken a drunk driving accident with a few fatalities to find out weather a player was abusing alcohol. Now all we have to do is read scouting reports made for fans like us online.

Some would argue that Riggo, and a few of the Hogs, abused alcohol. Remember the 5 O'Clock club? Or Sonny Jurgenson sneaking away from training camp to go on a bender. Not that I'm saying alcohol abuse isn't a concern, just adding in some perspective. If this guy really had an issue we would have heard about it all over NFL network among other sources, not just some random internet report. Many of us today could have been considered potential alcohol abusers during our college years. I think this is an overblown report because I have been researching Maualuga for 3 months now and haven't seen legitimate concern from credible sources.

BTW- I remember when they said Randy Moss had a weed problem, he fell in the draft. Okay not the greatest example of character, but Brady loves him.

Lol, you're kind of right. If I had gotten caught my scouting report would have said smoked cigerettes, used weed, and tried cocaine on more then one occasion. And of course the report would also say I couldn't handle my alcohol. Ironically I don't use any of these substances today, except maybe occasionally a glass of wine but other then that I'm completely sober and have no problems with addiction (quit ciggerettes cold turkey after a little less then a year of smoking). I also got into a few fights and was exposed to every form of discipline in High school at least once with the exception being expulsion. Even though I pretty much detest fighting these days, well at least street fighting. I do enjoy learning judo and Tae Kwon Doe in a controlled enviornment where sparring partners respect each others well being.

Man, thats crazy though. I'm nothing like that today. In fact a lot of my friends would tell you that I'm one of the most square, homebody types they know. Of course I never really got caught with all the things I listed except in High School, however I had a relatively low profile in college compared to that of a colleigate athlete.

Admittedly I could be reading too much into the scouting comments, but i have to wonder how many teams are "downgrading" their public statements about Rey just as posturing...so other teams don't feel it necessary to trade ahead and grab him. I'm trying to stay objective...and it seems like the best MLB prospect in the draft, who is also considered by most everyone as the hardest hitter in the draft, would be valued pretty highly by a lot of franchises out there.

I think this puts it in perspective. Good post Son Of Man. It's something that Danny could talk to him about when he comes for a visit. Supposedly Vinny has set up a meeting with him and Snyder sometime this month. Maybe they'll talk it over between cocktails. Seriously it should probably be checked out but it probably won't go as far as calling a Supreme Court judge "Sandy Baby".

Rey M. definitely had some off-field concerns (per my USC source), but it seemed like it was more a grieving phase he was going through and he's pretty much past them now.

I'm not a huge Maulaga fan per se, but I like his intensity. At #13 I certainly don't see us taking him, but if we were able to trade down, e.g. w/Detroit at 20 or into the 2nd round, I could see how he might be the best available.

So Andre Smith fired his agent? Maybe his agent suggested he run w/out his shirt at the combine?!

Good for Smith. I still feel this kid got bad advice that led to the fiasco at the combine. I'm sure a lot of ppl want to get their hands on any money he's going to earn. I hope this means a turn for the better for his career.
