Re: Grade the Redskins Draft!
Orakpo is the best pick of course but we fell asleep at the wheel the rest of the way..What do you expect we aren't a draft oriented team.
|
Re: Grade the Redskins Draft!
C. Day 1 was an A. The Sanchez ruse worked like clockwork, I, along with the Jets, fell for it and I am thankful we got Orakpo (and my gratitude to the Raiders and Bills for taking Heyward-bey and Maybin respectively). Now DB Barnes, FB Williams sounds nice but the rest look boring. Plenty of good o-line prospects and we get these 50/50 guys. I partly blame Buges for not taking Duke, Meredith or Shipley. He is too attached to his vets that he doesn't want them replaced yet. I hope he can get Rhinehart, Heyer ready when Jansen, Thomas and Samuels starts to wear down during the season.
I hope we are looking to land an OT or any o-line FA instead of depending of discards like Mike Williams and Robert Thomas to be our starters. |
Re: Grade the Redskins Draft!
B, I love the Orapko pick and Barnes can fill an immediate need for a #3 CB. I'm not going to kill the FO for not picking up any OL, especially in a draft with not much talent after the "elite" tackles, which Kiper or Mayock (I was going back and forth so I'm not sure) said would be at best 7th or 8th best last year. I was a little surprised we didn't go after Robinson in the 5th but the fact he was still around in the 5th speaks volumes.
I'm trusting that Heyer, Rinehart and Clark are going to make noticeable strides to answer the need to 'upgrade' the OL more than a 5th, 6th or 7th round pick would do. |

As I said before, only a lineman taken at #13 would have significantly help our offensive line, with players taken in the later rounds, you have to wait at least a year to have them contribute significantly. Besides, it's time for these players to step it up, I mean we pound the FO a lot, but let's for once put the pressure on the players to step up and play. |
Re: Grade the Redskins Draft!
I think we would have to wait until next year or so - it's hard to tell if some of our picks would pan out or not.. I'm kind of liking the Barnes pick.. If he blossoms, our defense would be much pretty great, if not the best.. Once again of course, there are other questions marks such as if Haynesworth and Hall will walk the talk..
Henson could be a good pick, as well.. From what I have seen, he looks good - I hope the D coordinators would be able to develop him.. I'm not sure about Cody, I guess the scouts see something in him that we don't know about.. Williams and Mitchell also could be good pick, that is if they develop.. The Mitchell pick intrigues me; we already have top 4 WRs excluding Thrash.. I would be sad to see Thrash go, although it may be time but he's a true Redskins (Gibbs's style).. But if Mitchell develops well, we would have pretty good WRs group for years to come.. |

1. Brian Orakpo DE 1st 2. Duke Robinson G,C 3rd 3. Gerald Cadigan RT, G 5th 4. Brad Jones OLB 6th 5. Anthony Appleby OLB 7th 6. Joe Bell RT 7th
I liked him, too, but 32 NFL GM's with better information than mine did not. |
Re: Grade the Redskins Draft!
I liked this draft. We got Orakpo and we didn't have to trade up to get him! Some said he was the best defensive end in the draft and we get him at 13! Did you all see how fast we made that pick? Goodell walks off and then walks right back onto the stage and announces it! I don't think I've seen a pick made that quick!
I like how we got two linebackers. We really have no depth there and our front office has been good the last couple of years when they pick in the later rounds..................like with Golston, Montgomery, Horton and Moore. So I can't help but think these guys will be good too. But the thing that I liked about this draft the most is that Sanchez went to our farm league team!!!! That smokescreen that the Redskins laid down. The way that they played it. That was great! I mean Cleveland might have taken Orakpo if the Jets don't call them! And that would have sucked! But Cleveland passes up on him and the Jets get our quarterback of the future if Jason doesn't pan out. Man, that was great! But, one thing I don't understand is why we picked up a tight end and a wide reciever....................when we needed Olineman. Maybe Vinny saw that all of the olineman that were available just sucked? Or maybe he had a plan with the undrafed free agents. He was able to find Stephon Heyer that way. Hopefully, he's a got a center in mind that can be the next "Stephon Heyer" for us. But, I don't get it and thats why I'm giving this draft a 'B'. |

Re: Grade the Redskins Draft!
I think it was a pretty good draft though it's to soon to tell for sure. Orakpo has the potential to add sacks and that is exactly what we needed. Barnes has great skills and could end up a starter. Even if he doesn't, I think he will contribute a lot. I really like this pick. Glenn can run and has been described as violent, Gotta like that in a LB. Also has a good motor and should help on ST's. We got an eventual replacement for Sellers. The receiver has good size and could be a real find after hitting the weight room. Don't really know much about the other LB but they obviously saw something they like. This draft class could be better than we're giving it credit for. For now, I'd give it a B.

Re: Grade the Redskins Draft!
As much as I would like to, I can’t give this draft anything higher than a D. Not because I think we made bad selections, but because of the implications of those picks: Snyder is setting Zorn up to fail.
We had the #4 defense last year, an anemic offense, and we did nothing to upgrade our offense until 7th round. Even then, we did nothing to upgrade our offensive line. The minute we failed to land Sanchez, our focus should have been upgrading our offensive line – either to protect Campbell in 2009 and the rookie quarterback we select in the first round in 2010 – Make no mistake, by spending our first 4 picks on defensive players, Snyder sent Zorn a clear message: “I’m not giving you a thing to help you improve this year. I’m hanging you and Campbell out to dry because I have every intention of hiring a new offensive minded coach next year and letting him select his own QB and offensive players to suit his system. While the majority of fans will applaud me for finally drafting a defensive end in the first round, what I’m really doing is setting you up to fail so fans will be on my side when I decide to fire you after a dismal offensive performance in the 2009 season.” So, for that reason, I give the draft a D – because it means we’re starting over again in 2010. Some thoughts about the picks: 1. Brian Orakpo DE, Texas He was the best player on the board at 13 and fills a dire need. Next to Haynesworth, he could have double-digit sacks in his first season. The Skins would be stupid to have Orakpo play LB on 1st and 2nd downs and move inside on 3rd as the Redskins told Orkapo they would do prior to the draft. To my knowledge, scouts unanimously say he is purely a pass rusher and sucks in coverage. Now he has a great work ethic so perhaps over time he could learn to fill such a role, but certainly not in his rookie season. If we’re smart, we’ll line him up at LDE and keep him there all season. Orakpo also has some versatility and could be used in a 3-4 defense, in case we somehow land Cowher in 2010. While I think Orakpo was a nice pick, several teams called wanting to move up to 13, and we could have easily dropped down some, picked up additional picks, and came away from the draft with several players with starting potential. 3. Kevin Barnes CB, Maryland If he hadn’t gotten injured last year, he very well could have been drafted in the first half of the 2nd round, at the latest. Evidently he’s completely healed from his injury and I really, really like this pick – probably my favorite of the whole draft. I think he’s our #4 corner on opening day, #3 corner by the end of the season, and he gives us leverage in negotiating with Carlos in the offseason. 5. Cody Glenn LB, Nebraska I like this pick more than some of you. Glenn is a special teams beast and I’m confident he’ll make the team. You can’t really ask for much more in the 5th round. 6. Robert Henson LB, TCU Wasted pick. I’d be surprised if he makes the practice squad. I would have much rather seen us take a center or guard here. 7. Eddie Williams FB, Idaho The only reason I think we signed him is to have some leverage in negotiating with Sellars, who’s decided he doesn’t like the contract he signed two years ago. He’s struggled with injuries and wont be able to participate in camp, so I don’t think he gives the skins any leverage at all. Wasted pick. 7. Marko Mitchell WR,Nevada The dudes very fast and I like the pick. Obviously, his chances of making the roster are slim, but given Thrash’s days are numbered and Kelly may never be healthy, he’s got a better shot than do most 7th rounders. |
Re: Grade the Redskins Draft!
The upgrades to the offense came last year. It's up to Zorn and company to get those guys up to speed to contribute this year. And of course the continued development of Campbell.

Re: Grade the Redskins Draft!
1- Brian Orakpo (DE) - The ONE guy I wanted them to draft! SO HAPPY!
3- Kevin Barnes (CB) - GREAT steal here, he was a projected 1st-rounder until he hurt his shoulder in 2008. He's going to be very good I believe 5- Cody Glenn (OLB) - Good depth for a position of need in the near future. 6- Robert Henson (OLB) - Ditto above. 7- Eddie Williams (TE/FB) - Now with Sellers' antics and his age, this was a very smart pick as insurance and possibly to replace Sellers next year. 7- Marko Mitchell (WR) - Pick could have been used better on an offensive lineman, specifically a Center. Overall, I loved the draft. Most happy that we did not get Sanchez and completely thrilled that we got ORAKPO!!!! :woot: So, I'll give it a high B, only because no o-line depth was drafted. |

If he TRULY wanted Shanahan to be coaching this team now, he would have fired Zorn and hired Shanahan immediately after he was let go. He wants a winner and while he's willing to do almost anything to do it, but tanking a draft in hopes that the team will suck so he can 'be justified' in firing the coach is ridiculous. |
Re: Grade the Redskins Draft!
IMO, it's not a bad draft. NOT perfect by any means. An "B" or maybe "C". We will definately be signifigantly improved as a team, especially when considering our FA picks as well.
BUT, VC and company needs to figure out how to get to the next level......like the Pat's It's about the journey? |

3- Kevin Barnes (CB) 5- Cody Glenn (OLB) 6- Robert Henson (OLB) 7- Eddie Williams (TE/FB) 7- Marko Mitchell (WR) Brian Orakpo was a great pick. It fulfilled a need and they got a very good player. Kevin Barnes is a decent pick. Most draft analysts didn't have him going this early. Cody Glenn is a head scratcher. Guy played linebacker only one year in college. Robert Henson is okay. Special teams, here we come. Eddie Williams was a horrible pick. H-back/fullback/tight end with injury problems. Marko Mitchell is a good prospect. He is big, fast and very production in college. Sleeper. |

You completely missed the point - Danny didnt tank the draft - he significantly improved the strongest area of our team - the defense. Whomever takes over as our HC next year will have one heck of a defense. As far as when does Snyder care about the fans? the only reason Jim Fassel isnt our Head Coach right now is fan reaction. Snyders #1 priority is packing the stadium with fans - he obviously feared that wouldnt happen with Fassel as our HC. |

If I was allowed more than 20 minutes of internet time at work per day, I would give you all sorts of criticisms of Orakpo – don’t get me wrong – he’ll likely be a great player, but everyone has weaknesses, and his coverage skills are his primary weakness. How many calls came in – According to Vinny Cerratos press conference, they had 2 offers to trade back – in those 90 seconds. Obviously, those offers weren’t enticing enough to accept. what did they have to lose by using their entire allotment of time? Perhaps other teams would make better offers or one of the two teams who had already made offers would sweeten the pot? And again, I did not accuse Snyder of “tanking” a draft – “Tanking” would involve deliberately making stupid picks. That’s not what happened here. For the most part, the skins got great players at a great value. If the skins were going to stay at 13, then taking Orakpo was a no-brainer. However, by failing to explore offers to trade down (allowing them to get a starting lineman AND a starting/rotational pass-rusher, the team essentially sealed both Zorn and Campbell’s fates. Baring a miracle, neither will be here in 2010. That’s why I gave the draft a D. We might have gotten great players, but by failing to address the offensive line, we’ve all but ensured another overhaul in 2010. This franchise is in dire need of stability. Instead, we’ve created a top 3 defense that will once again be shacked by a horrible, ineffective offense that cant score touchdowns. |
Re: Grade the Redskins Draft!
I know, not grading the off-season here. Just giving the draft a C. I give Orakpo and Barnes both A's. Glenn a B-, Henson and Mitchell Ds, and Mitchell a C+. I give more weight to the early picks because they are higher picks so they (the team) should hit on those. So somehow that averages out to a C, :)
Not to single you out, as this seems to be the consensus here, but I really think we need to evaluate the weight we are giving to the various picks. We had a 1st, a 3rd, and 5,6,7,7. The 1st rounder was in the upper half of the round, at #13. So many posters seem to be evaluating this draft as if all of the picks each carry the same weight. To me, that 1st round pick has to be weighted at 75-80% of total grade, at a minimum. The 3rd rounder is another 10-15%. If we grade those 2 at an A, the total grade would be a B at a minimum, and that would be ONLY if all 4 of the late picks are given a zero. I grade this draft an A, and it is an easy call. A B was guaranteed when we got Orakpo, IMO. I was happy with the Barnes pick, so the A was earned at that point. Anything the late rounders do for us will just be icing on the cake, as is always the case. Sorry, but I don't care that our late round picks had no media hype. I'm not ready to enshrine Duke Robinson in the Hall of Fame just yet, either. He and the other OLs we passed on were also passed on over and over by every single team in the league until the late rounds. Maybe, just maybe, the NFL people in the know don't rate them as highly as some of us on the outside. |

C'mon. If Snyder was that down on Zorn, he would have fired him before the draft. Serioulsy, you think Snyder cares? He fired Marty after one season, you think he'd wait on Zorn? Please.
Exactly. If he wasn't sold on Zorn he would have immediately cut the cord. Snyder may be prone to some blunders, but he knows a west-coast system takes time to become productive. |
Re: Grade the Redskins Draft!
when campbell leaves us via free agency, who the hell will be the quarterback next year? and i can,t blame him at all,we tried to get another quarterback in here three times during the off-season...
So is Campbell going to be in a rush to learn another new system potentially? |
Re: Grade the Redskins Draft!
The stadium would remain packed. Message board posters do not even come close to making up a fan majority, hell I'd venture to say that plenty of fans don't know much about Fassell. There's been enough to keep fans out of the seats, say oh, losing a lot, and the seats stay sold. And for those that don't attend, they've always got Craigslist and StubHub, which was shown plenty last year and in an exaggerated fashion on one prime time game. |

Snyders #1 priority is packing the stadium with fans - he obviously feared that wouldnt happen with Fassel as our HC.
That Fassel thing is just flat out wrong. And if Snyder's #1 priority is packing the stadium with fans, why wouldn't he have taken more steps in the draft to improve the offense? You say "barring a miracle," 2009 will be the last season for Zorn and Campbell. You also say that Danny's direction in this draft is basically his concession that the offense and Zorn have no chance for success. Okay then. So let me ask you, how does Danny shrugging his shoulders at offensive improvement do anything to fill the seats?? How does another frustrating below average offensive year, another coaching change, and another quarterback change to do anything to fill the seats?? Paintrain is right- you're contradicting yourself. We were 8-8 last year in the league's toughest division. We significantly improved the defense this offseason to where if the offense has an exact repeat of last year, we should still win one or two more games. It's hard to imagine the offense going backwards in year two. 9 or 10 wins this year isn't going to get Zorn fired. And if the offense improves, given the defense, this team could win 11 or 12. Making a very good defense appreciably better and allowing the offensive system to stick and improve in year two will fill the seats. It's the organization's constant flux and erratic behavior that annoy the fan base and threaten Danny's stadium filling agenda. |
Re: Grade the Redskins Draft!
How do I contradict myself? – I specifically stated why I gave the draft a D. If I was allowed more than 20 minutes of internet time at work per day, I would give you all sorts of criticisms of Orakpo – don’t get me wrong – he’ll likely be a great player, but everyone has weaknesses, and his coverage skills are his primary weakness.
Unless your work day ends at 10a, there is no way you spend only 20 minutes per day on the internet at work. I spend more time than that just reading your posts
I agree they could have spent more time, but they spend weeks and months leading up to this day discussing possible trade scenarios with teams below them. So they had a pretty good idea of what kind of calls they were going to get
And again, I did not accuse Snyder of “tanking” a draft – “Tanking” would involve deliberately making stupid picks.
Great players at great value...yet it's obvious Snyder is setting Zorn up to fail?? |
Re: Grade the Redskins Draft!
Maybe the FO was trying to pull off a "Horton" again. They should be so lucky. Only time will tell. But History teaches us this group has no clue how to run an orginization. If Miami can go from 1-15 to 11-5 in the span of 1 year when the only changes they made were the FO personnel, wat does that tell you?

There were more changes than just the FO. Chad Pennington ring a bell? Jake Long maybe? |

Well, Pennington was not really much of an upgrade over Cleo Lemon. <sarcasm font off> |
Re: Grade the Redskins Draft!
I gave it a C.
I can only really comment on Orakpo and Barnes. the other guys I admit i have never seen play before and i dont feel like grading them based off some 2 sentence scouting report blurb (like other people here) from crazyeddiesdraftreport.com'on. honestly, i follow football pretty hard core but have any of you all actually watched our 5th and 7th rounders play before? should i watch a youtube clip, read the comments then cut and paste them here as my own? sorry for my negative snippyness, i need a smoke, but honestly there are alot of people on here talking like they knew who our late round picks were before we drafted them. |
