It looks like Orakpo lined up at DE (?) during this drill? Does anyone have video of this, I'd like to see this drill.
They bumped it up a point from last year, and he has a 100 overall Morale rating...YAY!

I finally have found a WR giving props to WR coach Hixon; I can finally rest assured he is the best out there.

From On The Field For OTAs - 6/10 fomer practice squad wide receiver Marques Hagans is quoted as saying:
"I think right now," he said, "the main thing is trying to learn the offense and at the same time just try to focus on my game, on getting better every day. [Wide receiver coach Stan Hixon] is a good teacher of the offense, and I think with the group of guys that we've got, we've got good leadership -- and good competition as well, because there's a lot of talent out here. So I just try to stay on my game every day."
Nice to see Kevin Barnes balling. 2 INTs today. I could seriously see Smoot being our 4th CB this year behind Barnes.

It would be kind to say the passing game didn't click during today's OTA workout, when Roy Williams and Patrick Crayton were the only receivers available who have played a down for the Cowboys. "It was sloppy," Williams said. "I can't talk about everybody else. But I know the wide receivers, we were terrible today. We've got to get the young guys better prepared -

Glad to see how the Boys are better without T.O. LOL..

My favorite line from the OTA blog so far:

"Even Malcolm Kelly's presence in practice is becoming the usual."

If he's healthy all year it will be so awesome for us.

I hope Barnes turns out to be a very good player, it would help justify his selection while there were good LB's and OL on the board. I was hopin we would have picked the MLB from TCU Phillips (Ravens) or the OLB from South Florida McKinze (Pats). but there were also good O-linemen and even some good DE's on the board since it seems like they are keepin RAK at SLB. To me a DB didnt seem like a big need in the 3rd but ill let it play out and see how it goes before i judge.

According to today's insider (I think), Barnes walked off with 4 INT's in practice today.

How sweet would this be - Barnes and Tryon devoloping into top notch CB's relegating Smoot to 5 corner. I know I'm dreaming but, hey, that's what June OTA's are for.

Frankly, although I think he is a great character, I think Smoot is a liability every time he steps on the field even against the 3rd receiver.

Yup, 4 INTs. That's 6 INTs in the last 2 practices. I'd like to know what QB(s) he repeatedly abused. But regardless, he looks like a really good pick thus far. We'll see what happens at the end of July when the pads are on.

I would say that maybe this was the 2nd team? So maybe Collins or Colt. Although I think Hall has had two picks, so those prob were from Campbell.

Re: Redskins June 2009 OTAs

I wonder what the team would do if Rogers picks off a career high 5-6 passes this year, or some amount more than D-Hall does, and then they have these two young corners developing in Barnes and Tryon. Would you let Rogers walk coming off a career year? Do you keep all four of them?

The way I see it, Smoot could be a roster transaction at any time between now and next March. But with four corners on the younger side, how well does Rogers need to play this year before you just say, "we need to keep this guy, whatever the cost." Because you might just be blocking two young corners with two albatross contracts to more veteran players (but still on the younger side).

Is this season going to come down to a Hall vs. Rogers think? Is it conceivable that the uncapped year could be used to dump Hall's contract if Rogers vastly outplays him, and the young guys are ready for prime time. How will Blache screw this one up?

Good question, but I would need to see more out from Barnes and Tryon first, when it counts - on sundays, with pads on.. I'm big believer in Rogers, I'm not quite sure why I am though.. I just like him I guess.. I always believe the defense will be good when the players play physically.. Before last year, I probably would not mind the idea of letting Rogers walk.. Until after the season, he has shown his toughness (perhaps strong influence from the great Sean Taylor?.. We especially need physically CB to play against WRs.. Sean brought the fear to our defense, many WRs are afraid to catch balls with him roaming the field.. But he's not with us anymore (RIP), and then there are less WRs who are still afraid to catch against us..

But of course, if Rogers doesn't show the toughness at the next season then I might jump in the bandwagon..

Edit: But this doesn't mean I don't like Barnes and Tryon.. I especially like Barnes, he looks good.. I'm glad to hear Tryon is improving a lot.. I don't see anything wrong with having 2 or 3 great CBs along with 1 or 2 good CB at same time.. But of course, Redskins had to handcuffed our hands with Hall and Haynesworth (and maybe Orakpo?) contracts, which lessen our chances of signing Rogers and Campbell to what they re asking for (that is if they both play well enough)..

Re: Redskins June 2009 OTAs

Good story: Carlos Rogers and Nnamdi Asomugha were born 4 days apart. And Rogers is older.

Carlos is much, much older than we think. He's also a lot better than most realize. But he's coming up on the prime two years of his career. Maybe, and this is the first time I'm considering this, it makes the most sense to not offer him a long term deal. There's no way I would let him walk after this season though.

Snyder's budgeting to either pay Campbell, or pay another QB to live up to expectations.

With corner, we might have to make money for Rogers. Hall got the big bucks, and the team is making a youth movement, so I think Rogers has to play his way into a big money deal here.

Rogers is going to get his coin, but, I think without gaudy INT totals, it might be somewhere else.

There was an article about linebackers, maybe orakpo or wilson, I think on RI that mentioned it, then again, that might've been during minicamp. I think that Terl might've mentioned him in response to a comment as well. Or I could be completely thinking of Cody Glenn, but I was thinking it was Thomas. The way I read it was, Terl asked Hixon what he could do differently from last year, and his response sounded like he regretted not working more closely with Thomas and Kelly last season. Thomas' hammy and Kelly's knee definitely hurt their offseasons, but that doesn't mean Hixon shouldn't have been extensively going over plays, assignments, etc.

I guess the way I took it was he felt like he didn't work with the newbies enough last year. That's not really excusable when you use two of your first three draft picks on a position of such need.

Maybe I'm nitpicking. I hope that's the case.

What he ^ said. One would have thought after the class room portion of the learning the plays and play calls, while Moss and ARE were on the field, Hixon could have spent more time with DT and MK. If nothing else simply quizing them on play calls and what route is to be run. So when DT did finally see the field he would know all the routes by heart. All he should have to have done was learn the tricks of the trade like how to get seperation, how to throw off the DB. Things like that.

What 5 yrs and Hixon simply has not impressed me with his teaching skills. Oh well.

I agree. I just think Hixon is this really good guy, who hasn't done anything "bad" to be released, he just does not seem like he's an inspiring coach. But, as Matty would point out, the FO/Coaching Staff know more, so we will have another year to see what he can do. (not that we will have any reasonable metric to prove anything at the end of the season.)

The impression I got was that he was saying last year with them not coming on as fast as expected (largely due to injuries) he was only able to work on the basics of an NFL offense with them, and now he's going into greater detail.

Maybe you have been asked this before, but I am just wondering how you would judge the performance of an assistant coach? Or is it - in your opinion - a position impossible for a fan to review?

Smootsmack started this with his question several years ago as to whether the Skins problems lay with the position coaches... since then we have begun speculating on various positions with the focus, of late, honing in on Hixon. Has it all been mindless, pointless chatter? If so, can we blame SS?

Tough to judge, but I think fans are usually too critical of coaching in general and don't lay enough blame with the players. With our WR corps I'd argue under Hixon we haven't exactly had an overwhelming amount of talent. Moss is a borderline #1. Randle El is better suited as a #3, etc.

The anti-Hixon crowed seems to focus on this notion that he hasn't developed any young talent. Fair enough, but I'd argue what quality young talent has he been given to develop prior to Kelly and Thomas last year? Sorry but scrubs like Mix and Espy don't qualify to me. And for some reason Hixon's critics seem to overlook the fact that Moss and Randle El have both enjoyed career years under Hixon, but I guess for some reason Hixon should get no credit for that.

The fact he's been with the team for 6 years now has to count for something. If he was such a problem as some want to think I just find it hard to believe he wouldn't have been replaced by now. Especially with a head coaching change it would have been the perfect opportunity to bump him out.

Of course we can blame SS. When in doubt, just look his way.

;)
