Cooley is still young enough to be part of a rebuilding process. Gonzalez is on the last legs of his career, kind of a different situation.
Yeah...but the only player on our team that would (potentially) yield a 1st and a 3rd round draft pick is Cooley. The picks are what we would need to rebuild. |

We've gone MUCH further than 6 pages on some even more ridiculous threads on the Warpath. You really should spend some more time on this funny farm. :silly: p.s. Only 3 pages for me and if you read the posts, most of the replies range from "NO WAY" to "retarded". |
Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
Why would anyone think we would make a wise use of the 1st and 3rd round picks? So we'd give up Cooley for a Kelly/Rinehardt-type decision?

Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
HELL NO! The only keeper in my book is Chris Cooley, maybe Santana Moss if the contract is right. Everyone else on offense is expendable. Clean house on defense as well. Smoot, Rodgers, Griffin, and Daniels are at the top of the list of expendables. Zorn -> gone. Vinny -> gone.
During Gibbs 1.0, there wasn't a pass receiving tight end on the level of Cooley. Those offenses did okay. While guys like Cooley are nice to have, they aren't necessarily a must for prolific offenses.
Correct, Cooley is a luxury. We can't run the ball and we can't stop the run, so until we fix that we don't have much hope of being a contender. If we could get a 1st and 3rd for Cooley, and use our top picks for OL then I would do it. Problem is, we probably can't get that for Cooley. |
Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
Cooley is great but I don't think that any team would give up a 1st and third for him.
But if some team would do that, you have to do it. Unless Fred Davis is a complete bust, which I don't think is the case. |

Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
Hmmm, so the question is "Would I trade a Pro Bowl caliber tight end for two unproven players?" With the way that this team drafts I would have to respectfully decline.
I would give up Portis for a second rounder in a heartbeat though. |
Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
Given two facts:
1) getting a 1 and a 3 for Cooley would be huge, and 2) most of the other players that posters want to ditch won't draw much in return I say yes, trade the man, and turn the two picks into other offensive help |
Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
Both of these. Stupid thread.
Look man, it's a completely hypothetical situation, and it of course it won't happen. I was just interested in how people would react if faced with the choice of trading your best player for high draft picks to rebuild the team. Just like the Cowboys did with Hershel Walker. There have been several thoughtful, persuasive arguments for and against such an idea. There have also been some responses of the kindergarten level, and some, such as yours, which are simply indicative of those with low intelligence. With any internet message board, I've come to expect that. In any case, thanks (-- I guess --) for your contribution. |
Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
If trading Chris Cooley means we'll have two picks to use to get Trent Williams, then I say do it.
We'll already have another number one for another bad ass tackle. That's 1/4 of our problems solved. |
Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
In this scenario we would have 2 #1 picks, 1 #2 pick, and 2 #3 picks. We could turn these five picks into:
1 new qb 1 new halfback 2 new tackles 1 new guard or center It seems pretty enticing to me. |

Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
Please, there is no team out there that would make this deal with the Redskins.
But if there were, I'd make this trade in a heartbeat. We also should trade as many veterans as possible for draft picks, build offensive and defensive lines through the draft, and only then draft players at skill positions. And only after all of that is done should any consideration be given to expensive free-agent pickups. That's how the perennially good teams manage their personnel. It's what Danny Snyder has always refused to do. That's why Danny is the problem. If you agree that this is the case, make your voice heard. Go to Danny Snyder Must Go Petition : [ powered by iPetitions.com ] and add your signature. Withdraw your support until Danny is gone, for the good of the team. Stop enabling Danny's mismanagement. |

Have any changes ever come about as a result of online petitions??

Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
With the way Davis has played these last few weeks I've been thinking more and more about this and I've got to say, as much as I love CC I really don't think it would be a bad idea to put some feelers out there to see if there is any trade interest during the offseason.
Can we really say we've lost much of anything in terms of TE production since Cooley went out? |
Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
NO!! Cooley, Portis, and Santana deseve to be here as the new pieces gel to compliment them which is what they were brought in here for.

Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
I agree. It appears Vinny really isn't a bad judge of talent and I'll give him that, just drafts the right guys but at the wrong time when we have more pressing issues.
I don't think we'd be able to get a 1st and 3rd for a guy who went out with a broken leg, but I think even a 1st, or a 2nd+3rd could significantly help us in this upcoming draft. We have Yoder to block, Davis to catch and continue to improve his blocking. I don't think we're in any bad shape shopping Cooley. I do love him though, and he happens to be my favorite player on offense. It would be just too smart of a move not to do. I'll probably finally get that Cooley jersey I've been asking for for Christmas this year, and a month later he'll be traded. |
Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
I've been saying this for a LONG time. Probably around when this thread was created too.
He is the only player really worth anything. I highly doubt, however, that we will get a 1st AND a third. Best case would probably be a 2nd rounder. But as Matty said, it doesnt hurt to put out some feelers and get an idea of what Cooley's market value is. |
Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
No one is going to give a first and a 3rd for Cooley.
|
Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
Exactly, so the more important question.
How much is Cooley worth? As I said, a 2nd. |
Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
Of course nobody is going to give a 1st and a 3rd, but how about a 2nd and a later round conditional pick?
|
Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
Yes, I'd do it.
|
Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
I would take the 2nd and conditional too
|
Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
I think I mentioned this in another thread...but what about looking at Davis' trade value now?
|
Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
I would rather trade Cooley if we were going to trade one of them. Davis is younger and cheaper.
|
I think I mentioned this in another thread...but what about looking at Davis' trade value now?
If you are the Skins you'd have to consider it, right? Trade while the value is high? 2nd rounder? I don't know though. He's a good player and I'm not sure you get rid of a good player even if we have Cooley there. Tough call. |
Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
Jeez -- I thought it was a legit question at least...
Its absolutely a legit question. I would do it for sure. Davis is a least equal to Cooley, I would say a little better, definitely with more upside. I don't see him getting a 1st and a 3rd....maybe a 2nd. I'd still do it. |
Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
I would assume that a good coach could find a way to use both guys but if you had to trade one it would have to be Cooley. And I base this on the size of his contract. It just seems that this money could be better spent going forward now that Davis seems to have shown that he belongs "up here". If someone would give a second rounder and a conditional, you have to do it.
|
Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
First of all, I don't understand why some people here don't think anyone would give up a 1st and a 3rd for Cooley. The Falcons gave up a 2nd round pick for a 33-year old tony gonzalez. Cooley's also a pro-bowler, but he's 6 years younger. A team considering drafting a tight end with their first round pick would most certainly trade that same pick for Cooley. If its a high 1st rounder, i don't think wed get any additional compensation for him. however, if its a lower 1st rounder, then i absolutely think we could get a 3rd as well.
That said, I think Davis (due to his MUCH smaller contract) would actually garner more interest on the market, although i don't think he'd get us more than a 2nd rounder in terms of compensation. And if we were going to let him go for a 2nd rounder, then why use a 2nd rounder to draft him in the first place? that basically would mean we would have traded our 2008 2nd rounder for a 2010 second rounder - not much return on our investment there. If that were the compensation, i'd rather just keep them both. Cooley's my favorite player, but i have to ask myself, WWBBD? - What Would Bill Belichek Do? He wouldn't be sentimental about it. He'd keep Davis, trade Cooley for a 1st and 3rd, trade the first for two 2nds, use the 2nd round picks on starting-caliber linemen and then use the 3rd on a young TE to groom behind Davis. Given the opportunity (capless 2010), that's what i'd do. |
Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
Id jump all over a trade with Cooley, but I'd agree, the best youre going to get is an early 2nd rounder......Maybe a really late 1st, Maybe
|
Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
Just a bit ago I replied that the FO should definitely take a deal that gives a high pick, but I guess my question is what would that pick get us? Would it be more helpful to get rid of our year after year most reliable pass-catcher, pro-bowler, locker room guy for a 2nd round lineman?
Two TE sets aren't used often but Cooley and Davis play like very good receivers anyhow. I guess I'm saying I'm hesitant to place what offense they could produce next year on the wayside for a 2nd round pick. I know the argument that follows is that they won't produce a thing if we don't have a line to protect our qb. carry on... |

A 1st and a 3rd for a TE? I just don't see it.
|
Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
players like Cooley can be found in the draft in the mid rounds. i really don't see anyone making a trade for him and his salary. he's a good player but he's not a great player.
|
Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
i would do this in a new york minute. i think i brought this up in another thread, and people yelled like little school girls. sure, he is popular. but its much easier to enjoy the skins when they win. i would think very few are untouchable
