Where next week, San Francisco forum? You know they were once good too. While you're boasting about your great record, I would take caution and look at the Patriots undefeated season, which netted them an embarrassing lost to the New York Giants in the Super Bowl. The San Diego Chargers also come to mind, who went 13-3 a couple of seasons ago, and got punched in the mouth during the playoffs. LT hasn't been the same since. The list is long with teams that are red hot during the season and flop during the playoffs. I happen to think the Vikings are the best team in the NFC right now, but we'll see what happens if/when you guys meet them in the playoffs. I think either team will represent well in the Super Bowl. That being said, you're welcome to come here and share, talk trash, or whatever. Seems like fans from across the league come here to offer their condolences once in a while. |

I agree still the point is we HAVE a history, the braggart doesn't. Even going back 8 years where we have really struggled and NO has had lot of success they have only 3 more wins not counting this year. |
We're too financially vested in him to do either of those. The only we can hope for is that the CBA doesn't get signed and we go into an uncapped year where we can release players with no ill effect.
I don't think this is a complete reflection on Portis's ability. From the looks of it we made adjustments at half and didn't give up on the run. Atlanta seemed prepared for some pass heavy offense so we could get back into the game. We did manage to run better in the 2nd half though. I can't completely put that on Portis given the circumstances.
Portis has had enough and just doesn't care. He has the Barry Saunders' Syndrome. Guy has been one of the few t rue ballers out there for years, and now he has had enough. Seriously now, I think the guy has already thrown in the towel. Can you blame him? |
Re: Portis is a BIG problem!!!
CP can still ball, he just doesn't have a line in front of him. He's lost a step but can still be productive. My problem w/ him is he never practices, he talks bad about his teammates, isn't the hardest worker around and he's too close w/ the owner. To me he seems like too much of a diva to keep around. The offense needs some leadership not divas. He needs to go next year IMO.

Re: Portis is a BIG problem!!!
While I dread another Trung Candidate/Chad Morton situation at RB, the fact of the matter is that Portis is done here. He'll have a Jamal Lewis flash in the pan somewhere else, mainly because he'll finally get motivated after being cut, but that will be his last 1,000 yard season.

Yes, I can blame him. He's highly overpaid & doesn't perform all the tasks required of him, i.e. practice. I know he's been banged up over the years, but I don't buy all of it about him being that hurt during every week (this week's an exception, he def. shouldn't play). But the main problem is he's no longer good enough to get away w/his selfish ways. He misses holes, even if there only there for 2 yard gains, he stumbles over his & the line's feet. He just doesn't look much like a starting nfl rb this year. I wasn't surprised that Betts came in & looked sharper. I know he got better blocking but he looks much more explosive & decisive than CP. |

Thats exactly why he will be out of football if/when he leaves the team. Any other team is going to require that he practices, and that will be why he will stay unsigned. His attitude, work ethic, and salary demands, will overshadow his natural ability (or at least his former natural ability). That's why it's too hard to see where Portis is really at right now. All indications say that he is done, like Shaun Alexander, but with our team in shambles, it's hard to tell. I do know the other backs looked much better than portis. Hit the line harder, more burst, more speed..... |
Re: Portis is a BIG problem!!!
Did anyone notice in that article about Betts in today's wash post (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/11/12/AR2009111210638.htmlthat ) that S. Smith takes a veiled jab at Portis about his practice habits. Smith spoke this way when S. Lewis was brought in, he didn't directly say it but strongly implied his opinion.
Zorn last year made a comment about Portis not practicing of course. I wonder if essentially he & Smith are happy that Betts will be starting? |

Portis slows our offense down it seems. What do u guys think?
+1 I think the effectiveness of the running game sans Portis backs you up OP. I agreed with you before but there wasn't any way to quantify the effect. But the Falcons game was the clincher for me, the OL play was spotty Monty was getting pushed back all game. But Betts and Rock were running hard and were able to get all the yards that were out there. Portis hasn't been healthy all year and i think he's hasn't been running hard and he's been leaving some hard yards on the field. |

Re: Portis is a BIG problem!!!
Well after today..I guess I'll take 75% over an injured Portis right now.
A win is a win and Betts and company have earned their chance to play. Let CP sit until he is 100% then we see. IMO he's never played well when he's injured. And that no practice thing has always struck me as counter-team anyway. |

Re: Portis is a BIG problem!!!
Betts looked fantastic today. That's two games in a row, and honestly very few of the games that Betts has started in his career has he ever looked bad. Has to be more than coincidence.
BUT there was a new combination on the O-line, who did well. Levi Jones at LT may have improved the chemistry (some of those holes looked huge!) As well, Denver hasn't been playing well against the run. I say Portis gets back in there next week, but I wouldn't mind giving Betts additional carries. |
Re: Portis is a BIG problem!!!
I say make Portis #2 next game (if he can play), but the chances of that are slim to none due to Portis and Snyder's relationship
Speaking of the line, I think Jones and Rinehart both helped the line.. |
Re: Portis is a BIG problem!!!
I thought that Ganther looked reasonably good against Denver and I hope that he gets more playing time.
|
Re: Portis is a BIG problem!!!
Check out the article posted in the WP. You get the impression that Sherm Lewis would rather keep Betts in?

Re: Portis is a BIG problem!!!
I say you still give Portis a chance, but one
either he figures out how to hit the holes and extend the runs.. or Betts is the feature |
Re: Portis is a BIG problem!!!
Well after watching Betts, Rock and Ganther take reps, I wouldn't be sad to see Portis go...

Well to be fair the line also gave JC time to complete some passes. Two of his sacks where on JC and not the line. |
Re: Portis is a BIG problem!!!
I still think that it is some part Portis though. He had some holes this year and he doesn't attack the line of scrimage anymore. He is uninspired. Where as today we got see a few guys on our team attack the line of scrimmage. Betts did an excellent job of finding and hitting holes hard. He didn't always go down on first contact and the same goes for Rock he has ran the ball very well and HARD when he gets his chances.
Maybe he gets a couple of weeks off and watches other RBs run hard he will want to come out and try to show them up which could be a very good thing. OR just getting Portis into the rotation and have more of a runnig back by commitee scheme. |

Now, wether or not the Falcon we're playing nickel after half time doesn't change how hard the Betts and Rock were running. And i have the game recorded and would have to go back and watch, but i don't recall the Falcons playing nickel gainst our base defensive personnel so i don't know where you're getting that from. Re: Portis is a BIG problem!!!
Portis better not see the field the rest of the year. He is our 3rd best RB at this point.
Betts and Cartwright are WAY WAY WAY better. |
Re: Portis is a BIG problem!!!
Betts has proven over and over again things to this team. Yesterday was just one more thing. I dont see why people can't realize that he is better than Portis at this point. He's just never had the opportunity.
CP should not play again this year. 3-6 means you can play other players and RB is definatley one position that needs change. Yesterday proved that we can win without Portis. Betts ran for 114 yards on his first start. And Portis ran for 100 yard just ONCE in 8 games....that tells you alot, or it should. |
