I'm trying real hard to understand the, "We need a quarterback in the first couple of rounds" logic. I'm not trying to insult those of you who believe we should draft a QB, I'm just saying that I don't understand it. Campbell falls right in the middle of almost all NFL QBs statistically. If you think anyone else would have done better this year you're taking crazy pills. I'd like to have a top 5 QB too, but we have no idea what we're going to end up with. Imagine spending the next 3 years trying to groom a JaMarcus Russell. JC may not be the long term answer but he can certainly help get the Redskins through the rebuilding phase. Why don't we replace the players who suck instead of replacing the players who are average? Can anyone say, with a straight face, that we need to replace the QB before we address several line positions, at least one RB or a secondary that got us a whopping 10 interceptions so far this year? You have to take the best player in any of those three areas first. Shouldn't the horrible areas of the team be addressed before the average areas are??
I can answer your question with one simple word, and that word is depth. Collins might hang it up or should, and Brennan is a bust. Give me a Pike, Stull, Lefevour, Canfield, Sheehan, or Todd over Brennan. Shoot I would want Joey Elliot of Purdue or even a Mike Kafka from Northwestern before Brennan. Plus JC might split dude. You are right, JC is what ranked 15 or something in passing and a lot of teams have shitty QBs like Cleveland or Oakland. JC might be a good backup for other teams or "insurance" for others still. Either way you need a QB, maybe even two if Collins bolts.

But let's suppose Bruce Allen came out and said "Jason Campbell is not the long-term answer for us" Would you rather they just let him go now and start fresh with someone else asap or let him hang around for another year even though he's not in the long term plans.

Spiller would be very exciting (though I think I slightly, very, slightly prefer Best). Still, I'd be kind of curious to see what Alridge can bring to the table given the opportunity. And combine that with drafting Dwyer-we'd have to trade into the 2nd probably-I would like that

Berry is a total stud...but I don't want to draft anymore DBs right now. Other than maybe LB, I'd rather not draft any defensive players.

I think too much of a fuss is being made about Bradford's shoulder injury. You'd think he had his arm amputated the way some talk about it

Re: Sam Bradford remains projected pick to Redskins

Why risk taking Bradford who has had his shoulder messed up twice in the same season? If he takes a hit and his shoulder pops again you just wasted another #1 draft pick on a kid that will never produce for you. Too much QB talent available in 2010 just to go for the overhyped Big 4 trap.

Exactly and keep in mind having a rookie QB doesn't mean your throwing in the towel for the season. Even the Jets are going to the playoffs with Mark Sanchez at the helm. And lets not forget the Ravens and the Falcons both making the playoffs with rookie QB's in 08.

Plus the most telling stat is probably what Shannahan was able to do with Cutler in his rookie year with an 88 rating in the 5 games he started his rookie year.

I fear that even if we make the playoffs with JC we won't be able to even make it to the NFC championship let alone win the Super Bowl. Keep in mind this is a team that wants to win a Super Bowl, not simply make the playoffs. I know it's been beaten to death but I don't want to settle for mediocrity. If we're going to be a championship contender year in and year out we're going to need a true franchise QB. The kind of guy that makes you feel like the Saints, Colts, Steelers, and Patriots feel every week they go into a game. All thats left is to have our competent front office decide if we can develop that guy into the player we need him to be.

Also as Smoot has said before Drew Brees had similar shoulder problems going into free agency

Thats it, alright my bad. Still the point is the same, guy with a questionable shoulder has turned into possibly the best QB in the league.

I agree that we need depth, which is why we can't afford to lose Campbell. Imagine Campbell gone, Collins retires and we have a rookie QB. We would need to spend a draft pick and maybe obtain a QB through FA and waste a lot of resources on a position that wasn't our Achilles Heal this past season.

Re: Sam Bradford remains projected pick to Redskins

The whole allure to Bradford for me was that, hey, if we're picking between 7 and 12 in the draft, and Clausen is the first QB off the board, we might be able to land Bradford because of an injury, where the injury might be causing him to be undervalued. We could keep Campbell for a year, and turn the keys over to Bradford in 2011.

If we're picking in the top five (and only if we win can this not be the case, and we can only win if the Chargers rest their starters...and even then), whoever you would take at QB is going to play right away. And frankly, I don't think anyone wants to have anyone in this draft class at the top of their depth chart come August.

Hopefully Bruce Allen doesn't come out and say that because that would be a Vinny move and undermine the little confidence JC has now. I'm not even a JC fan, I'm trying to look at things pragmatically. We, as fans, get intoxicated when we see a rookie QB turn into a stud. Teams with successful rookie QBs already have a line and even an average RB to boot. Since LT broke Joe's leg the QB position has always been an issue for Washington. In the Super Bowls we won our trademark was an over-powering offensive line, not a star QB. Bring it back to smashmouth run-first-no-matter-how-many-people-you-have-in-the-box-cause-you-can't-stop-us-if-you-tried football. That is Redskin football. Run the I with Spiller and put Davis in front of him with Cooley on the line, DT and Moss on the outside. I know some of you will laugh at my wishful thinking! Whatever the Redskins decide to do I will support; however, could you be happy seeing Bradford drafted when Okung is on the board? Bradford drafted when Spiller is available, or Bradford drafted when Berry is out there?

If I remember right the Falcons O-Line gave up over 50 sacks the year before Ryan was drafted, and even though they drafted Sam Baker in the first round he was limited to 5 starts and 8 gp. They basically took that same line that gave up a large amount of sacks and with proper coaching got it to near the top of the league in terms of sacks allowed. Now I'm definitely not saying that we go into next year with the same O-Line, far from it in fact. Maybe the Falcons are the exception to the rule, maybe they had talent but the coaching was horrible. The point is we will probably have a revamped O-Line next year, and we don't need to spend a first round pick to do it. By the same token we would need to make sure that one of our 1st two picks is an O-Lineman, that much I'm sure of.

Eric Berry, from Tennesse. He set the NCAA record for interception return yards, is a ball-hawk and a vicious hitter. Basically everything we DON'T have right now in our secondary.

Basically the next Troy Polamalu or Ed Reed. Either way he's expected to get to that top tier by 2013. Could easily be the highest safety selected in the history of the league, he's that highly regarded.

Mel Kiper:
Analysis: Ultimate playmaker, in the Ed Reed mold.

-Suppose he only told you

-It's possible to select your QB and LT of the future in the same draft. Long and Henne, Baker and Ryan

-I think I've said a few times that Okung should be the first choice. Not sure Spiller should be taken that high. He's tempting though. I think Berry will be gone and even if he's not I'd rather develop the safeties we have (maybe take Nate Allen later in the draft)

If BA doesn't tell JC that we're sticking with him 100% I think JC will just sign somewhere else. There are probably several teams that would give him a multi-year deal and better security than Washington if he's not assured of a shot at being number 1. If we draft a rookie QB in round 1 or 2 Campbell will leave before the season. I know I wouldn't stick around to groom my replacement while getting hit after every pass.

We could draft a QB and LT in the same draft, I just think we shouldn't spend an early round pick on a QB.

Berry is a game changer. Everything in me says to draft the next best lineman (Williams) or Spiller, but it would be hard for anyone to pass Berry up. If I have to watch Landry in coverage for any longer I am going to go insane yelling at my TV.
The Andrews' news has been talked about here before. Just saying let's not read too much into it right now
The rumors came out about Shanahan being interested in the Bills, Dallas, and Bears job but recently Schefter, who is close friends with Shanahan has said Shanahan won't be going to the Bills, then he said he wont be going to Dallas and most recently said he won't be going to the Bears.

I think the whole interest thing is to keep the media off his back about the Skins job which was probably already agreed upon prior to him talking to the Bills.

Who did DS and Vinny go see in the college ranks? Which QB's? I gaurentee Shanahan said those are who he likes, so they went out to see them.

Allen may be surprised how much better JC plays with an improved o-line. I know we can pick-up some FA's, but who's out there?, we are NOT one good lineman away from having a good o-line. We have 1 pick in the 2nd and no 3rd pick. So do we draft one in the 2nd and wait and get some more in the 4th if we use our 1rst for a QB? We can draft a QB in 2011, if there is no draft, Snyder can damn sure afford to outbid for one coming out. If John Elway or Peyton Manning were coming out it would be one thing, but I don't think anyone is comparing Clausen or Bradford to those 2. Don't forget, Locker comes out next year and I'm sure there will be others to get excited about. It was Sanchez last year. Let's face it, this line could use more than a 2nd and a 4th pick.

Mort has also been putting his reputation on the line saying that Shannahan is virtually guaranteed to be the next head coach of the Redskins. Keep in mind Mort also called the Redskins trade with the Bronco's in 2005 to get Campbell.

Incidentally Bradford is reportedly close to signing with Bus Cook (if he hasn't already). Cook is Cutler's agent as well so he already has a history with Shanahan.

Most if not all trainers and doctors who have studied him and his injury say that he should be fine. Though he may want to bulk up a bit.

The Redskins team doctor performed the surgery on him, so we should know better than anyone how his shoulder should hold up.

I read up on Bradford's injury to the AC joint. Mild cases of such injury require rest only. Serious cases, like Bradford's, require surgery and a long recovery. However, according to several medical Web sites, once that injury heals, there is no long term damage or propensity for re-injury. Summary: Bradford should be fine.

In my opinion Micheal Turner made that line a better pass blocking group. Plus, I believe they are a bit younger than the aging overpaid guys we have. You can coach talent, I dont believe we have any upfront. Dockery maybe, Reinhert maybe, but everyone else is either too damn old, injury prone or just sucks (Heyer!)

Re: Sam Bradford remains projected pick to Redskins
I want Leinart because allegedly Shanahan likes him and i'm not overly impressed with any of the QBs in this years draft.

I would rank our top team needs in a general (but not exact) order as:

OFFENSE:
Left Tackle
Quarterback
Right Tackle
Right Guard
Center
Running Back

DEFENESE (We're likely switching to a 3-4):
Nose Tackle (if Hanyesworth plays DE)
Defensive End (2 DEs if Haynesworth plays NT)
Outside Linebacker (Opposite Orakpo)
1 - 2 Interior Linebackers
Cornerback (one to replace Rogers. 2 if Hall is gone as well)

At that point, we really need a blocking TE a FS, a backup QB and probably another WR and RB. I'd put FS first amongst those needs.

Given the weight i'm placing on all the above needs, combined with the general talent level you get drafting players at positions (you can generally find a better free safety in the 6th round than you can a Nose Tackle, DE, WR, CB, QB, RB etc.), safety is one of the last positions we need to worry about filling in the draft. We also could also consider keeping Smoot and moving him to FS as well. He certainly couldnt play the position any worse than Landry. Free agency could also get us some temporary help there, but i can't imagine any more "waste" of a top 5 pick than a free safety, given all of our other needs.
I am just not sure how you put the QB position #2. BOTH tackles are going to need replaced. If you think Heyer is the answer over there, then you are smoking something. Right guard i think Reinhert will be productive. We have the opportunity to get the #1 offensive lineman in the entire draft. If we trade down or stay put, the first pick needs to be an oline man. Campbell with a completely crap oline managed to finish in the middle of the league is basically all statistics. Imagine what the guy could do if he actually had time to throw the ball. Didn't you hear them saying they removed all deep balls from the playbook because of how horrible the line was, come on!! for people to continue to think drafting a QB is the answer are insane. The oline is what is important to this team and any team.
As far as defense, I dont think we are in need of any major upgrades. If we switch to a 3-4, which that isn't a guarantee, we would probably only need an inside guy. I think we have some quality guys that can play in the 3-4. Wilson and Blades can fill in nicely, with Mcintosh, orakpo, and fletcher.
