Aint that the truth, imagine reporters being judged by athletes on their articles it would never happen, but reporters can vote on athletes. You know 65% of the vote is probably based on the athletes who are most friendly to the reporters.

And finally, a few notes that are too bizarre not to include:

1. Chris Berman has a vote. Really?

2. Poor Brian Orakpo lost two voters, who changed their mind and chose other non-Cushing defenders. Strange.

3. Howie Long was "Not available." Taping a truck commercial, perhaps?

Him getting revoted for rookie of the year is the largest double standard I've ever seen in my life. These are the same hypocritical dolts who refuse to vote for Big Mac to the HOF. Also, I can't recall the word "cheating" being associated with Brian Kushing either. Whenever you heard the name Barry Bonds, or Big Mac, the word "cheat" would soon follow. I disagree. He should have been on the ballot but gotten 0 votes which would have worked out great if it hadn't been for the 18 idiots with votes. Having Cushing loose his DROY award would have helped send a message to kids that the general public won't support steroid use. In fact thats the part that worries me the most, seeing as how it will now send a message to high school kids that the ends justify the means.

Way to go sportswriters. Freaking F+. I mean do we really have to be so strict as to leave Cushing off the ballot for them to get it right? Thats the kind of treatment I would expect to be reserved for children, only problem is today they proved they were worthy of such treatment.

Baseball is just retarded. To me the media drives all the crying over roids in baseball. It's like they pretty much ignore that the pitchers were doing it. Yet when a hitter does it they can't stop talking about for 10 straight days. I personally don't care cause everyone was taking juice. You guys are all wrong.

BRIAN CUSHING IS THE SMARTEST GUY IN THE WORLD.

I encourage EVERY young athlete to do drugs. Get your hands on the best steroids money can buy. It CLEARLY pays off. In baseball, football, wherever. Just try not to get caught UNTIL you've played for a while and gotten paid.

In the end - a mediocre young athlete can bust his butt off and fail -- and bag groceries at Safeway. OR - he could use steroids and get drafted, get millions of dollars and even get DROY. What happens if you get caught? You get to keep your awards, keep your MILLIONS, and you even get one month more vacation in September. Four game suspension is nothing, and if anything it encourages more people to do it. Why wouldn't a player like Justin Tryon or Rob Jackson start taking steroids? If they don't make the team their lives are marginal if not over. And the penalty is obviously small -- no one apparently cares.

I think there are two parties at fault:
1) Sports leagues (& Congress) -- harsher penalties for crimes such as this. He should've lost his DROY and probably should have been suspended the season since he was already suspected of prior drug use.

2) Fans - including ourselves. We still buy tickets to watch ARod, Bonds, Shawne Merriman.. And Houston fans will still cheer Cushing by next year when he gets that interception for a touchdown...

[disclaimer: i actually do not think anyone should do steroids. i'm just pointing out that given the current regulations and punishments, it makes financial sense to do so because it is not really punished]

This really isn't the NFL's problem. If anything, it suggests that it's testing system, which caught Cushing, is about as effective as any system out there. So they suspended him, because they caught him.

If he's a habitual user, and I'm not saying he is or isn't, then the big story here is that they NCAA's testing system blows, or more likely, it's not actually a random system. The Texans were perfectly justified taking Cushing where they did and giving him all that money, because he wasn't just a one year wonder breakout player who slipped through the cracks one year, but rather, he was a four year player, and nearly a three year starter at USC who never once got caught in college, where there is actually plenty of interest around keeping student athletes away from drugs.

I don't give a crap what professional athletes put in their bodies. If this is your way of making a living, and you can comply with the policies of your league, I don't care if a guy needs eighteen pills and three cortizone shots (cortizone is an anabolic steroid) to get through the day. If that's what makes him perform his best, then he should do it. If he breaks an existing rule, then he takes his suspension like a man. Don't do it again. More specifically, don't get caught.

To recap: NCAA testing, woefully inadequate. NFL testing, excellent. I don't know if Cushing gets my vote for DROY over Orakpo or Matthews (specifically Matthews), but the whole idea of a revote is moronic. And good for the football writers for not making like the baseball writers moral majority. Again, I don't know if Cushing's on field play made him the best rookie, but apparently, those with a vote did feel that way, so that conversation should have been over at that point.

Well, I agree the NFL testing is probably good, but how do we know the NFL testing is "excellent"? I feel that positive steroid tests are like finding a roach. You may squash that roach, but you know there are about 100 more you didn't find yet...

Side note: The irony is that "Cushing disease" in medicine results from excess steroids in the body.

The NFL mandates a four game suspension for first time violators of the substance abuse policy, which seems like enough of a deterrent to limit overt cases of steroid usage. In other words, if you don't respect the NFL's policy, you'll be out of the league before too long.

I highly doubt Brian Cushing will be caught a second time. If he does, then it's a year long suspension.

My point is that people who use performance enhancers aren't necessarily cheaters. Cheaters, in my mind, are those players that never play within the rules of a game, which may include usage of performance enhancers. Blitzing in the pro bowl is cheating. Taking performance enhancers that aren't on the NFL substance policy (or even taking things that are, if incidental) would not be cheating.

But the lying and half-truths are what pisses me off.

Really? a couple of medical sources? what, webmd? you didnt get it checked out by a doctor? did a doctor tell you you had tumor(s)?

arent tumors pretty easy to detect? why did an NFL athlete play thinking this might be his last year of life without going through testing to find the tumor?

If he had a tumor, wouldnt the subsequent 19 tests he took also fail b/c of the tumor? what? you had a tumor that caused 1 false positive but for some miraculous reason it didnt cause anymore false positives but the tumor was never treated or even detected?

He said "i am very concerned about my health" and why he got the false positive. really?

you thought you could die in a year b/c of a tumor yet if it was suspected you had a tumor, im pretty sure any hospital in the country could find out for you after a couple of tests. so you thought you were dying for a whole year but didnt bother to get anything checked out?

just say what happened. if you did it, ok we understand, dont do it again and lets move on. but claiming he is a medical mystery is a joke. the tumor excuse he just tossed out there with no evidence he had one, indeed if he thought he had one, he would have known one way or the other in weeks not 9 months and counting.

IMO the use of steroids or any illegal performance enhancing substances in any sport is extremely serious. It ranks as bad as game fixing. Sports leagues are not taking it seriously enough.
The punishment for positive tests is not harsh enough, it does not serve as a deterrent.
NFL's four to six games suspension is a slap on the wrist.
First positive test should be a full year suspension. Second positive and you are out of the league for good. This should carry over from college to the pros. In other words if a college football player tests positive in college that strike should be carried over to NFL.
The slap on the wrist thing is not working.

one thing about the banned substances nfl policy. its an automatic 4 game suspension if your took sugar pills or some kind of dietratic (sp?) (williams boys, jarmon) but it also the same 4 game suspension for roids and masking agents.

the nfl should tier the punishment so that the level of punishment reflects the varying degrees of what the specific banned substance was.

It does sound like he's trying to say he had a tumor. That's completely preposterous and dumb.

But let's explore that: If he did, he would have had testicular cancer (like Lance Armstrong, common in young men). A testicular cancer with elevated HCG would be somewhat advanced, and certainly would require orchiectomy (removal of testicle). That didn't happen which means he clearly doesn't have it. Could his doctors have told him he might have it? Sure, but they're not dumb - they knew most likely he was using steroids.

And yes, hermaphrodites could have elevations of HCG, depending on what female to male parts they had. ;)

Btw, there was some thought that marijuana could cause a false postiive HCG, but that was disproven in the 1980s.

Conclusion: The guy is an idiot and was probably doing steroids.

Re: Brian Cushing Suspended 4 Games

"We did research and found out that his was a plausible explanation. We consulted an expert who suggested further testing. We became convinced that this was a situation that was naturally produced.' "

It sounds like when Cushing found out about his positive test he went to a lawyer first and lawyered up.

Then at the attorney's office, they decided to see if there are medically acceptable reasons for his test result.

Google came up with tumors and a pituitary gland issue.

I honestly dont think Cushing ever got or sought medical treatment for his tumors or pituitary gland issue. Im starting to think he didnt offer any medical expert witnesses at his appeal, instead just submitting random medical articles talking about plausible explanations without directly linking Cushing to the medical conditions referred to in the articles.

Like I said prior, I hate people who use "plausible deniability".

Notice how the attorney doesnt say whether he did the follow up tests. Notice how the attorney doesnt say a doctor ever diagnosed Cushing with this gland issue or tumor. His lawyer is playing doctor based off what he read from a few favorable articles on teh internet while keeping a blind eye to the majority of articles saying otherwise.

I helped on a case where a college kid was drunk and acting violent in the hospital. Guess what I did? Googled to see if concussions can cause violent outbursts.

Was the drunk college kid's violent outburst at hospital due to his concussion? probably not but I had a webmd article saying concussions can cause mood swings, irritability, etc. so its plausible.

lol i dont even know if he had a concussion.

Cushing should be ashamed for himself and his teammates. The more he opens his mouth the more shit that comes flying out of it. He needs a better attorney or needs to be the better person.

redskins121684 05-18-2010 05:52 PM

Re: Brian Cushing Suspended 4 Games

I am not defending Brian Cushing here, that should be said first.

His claim that the HCG test result showing elevated levels are coming from a pituitary gland defect are, sadly, plausible and well documented. Cushing has a medical history showing irregular and spurratic growth patterns. In high school he had the unfortunate experience of growing over 6 inches in a period of one year. The pain that this type of growth would put an individual in would be absolutely agonizing especially if he is trying to play sports while he is growing like this. His father has actually spoken at some length regarding this condition and at one point Cushing had to be taken to the hospital because he could not walk as a result of the pain. Now I am not an expert on this but I do have a strong background in neurophysiology and one interesting thing with this is Cushing employed the increasingly popular hyperbaric chamber therapy during his knee injury toward the end of august. Now, hyperbaric exposure does have an effect on pitutitary glandular function and this has been documented well in many clinical trials. Typically it is employed with adolescents who have poor blood flow to the thyroid or pituitary resulting in low organ weight but in Cushings case the exposure would have been during sleep cycles where endocrine function would normally spike. In research settings most doctors have taken adolescents who are functionally deficient in terms of pituitary performance and they have observed a normalization of pituitary function following hyperbaric exposure. In Cushing's case you have an already overactive pituitary in a hyperbaric environment. Is it plausible for the gland to secrete a slightly higher than normal amount of HCG during his time in a hyperbaric environment particularly if that time coincided with his sleep cycles.....yes it is. What's more interesting is that he stopped using the hyperbaric chamber sometime in September or early October, he never tested positive for HCG during any subsequent tests. I think it would be really interesting to have him get back in the chamber for a month and test him again, or even take a guy like Lavernius Coles who uses a similar chamber and test his HCG levels. Another important part of this is the amount of HCG in his blood or urine. If it was really high then disregard everything I just said. I think he's big juicer but I thought it bore some mentioning that this defense is not unheard of in the science community although a case with these specific circumstances would be really hard to duplicate.

The source also points out that, while lawyer Harvey Steinberg generally introduced evidence as to the possibility that hCG may be naturally produced due to conditions other than the presence in the body of a tumor or a placenta, Steinberg failed to introduce evidence demonstrating that Cushing had any of the conditions that could naturally produce hCG.

^ this is from an article i just read and while it is an un-named source, it confirms my suspicion that Cushing add his atty only presented medical articles talking about what could possibly cause his test results and not any evidence or expert medical testimony that Cushing in fact suffered from those possible causes.

Also read an article which says the NFL is not happy with cushing's post public PR antics by making all these false claims and pleas. The NFL and Cushing know the ful and real story and I imagine there not to happy about a player and aent repeatedly lying to the media and painting te NFL and teh appeal process in a negative light.

I wonder if he keeps it up they can suspend him some more for lying and bringing a negative light to the shield?

this cushing thing and the way cushing, his agent and lawyer are handling things is freakin intersting.

i love to hate people who flat out lie to the fans. Cushing thought he was dying? yeah right you fucking fake.

Cushing thought he had a thyroid problem which caused the one-time positive test but miraculously and naturally cured itself and didnt cause any other fasle positives? lol, man, his atty is an absolute idiot who came in unprepared and willing to have his client lie, repeatedly.
