I disagree.
Punt returners can take big hits but they aren't that common. Kickoff returners often take bigger hits but they run directly into the kickoff coverage and they don't have the option of fair catching a ball in play. Do you remember Dgreen Dante hall taking any kill shots?

You play the guy in the slot and that solves the problem of him getting off the line.
Even if he was split wide, most corners are going to have to respect his speed and give him some cushion, if not, easy six for us.

His size is not that uncommon. Mark McMillan had a solid 8 year career at corner. That guy had to deal with every single player trying to run him over and he held his own.

I'm not going to start the Brandon Banks Mancrush fanclub but he deserves a shot.

After last nights preseason game against Buffalo, I'm convinced Brandon Banks can make it in the NFL. His size is an advantage rather than a hinderance. He is not only fast and quick but elusive. It's hard to adjust to someone with quickness and speed. His only flaw is dropping punts. If he takes another punt to the house, he would have had more punt returns that ARE, Moss or any other punt returner has had in many seasons. I'm routing for this young man to make the 53 man roster. He won't be the only player under 170 pounds to make it in the NFL. Buffalo's Roscoe Parrish is small and a starting WR for 4 years.

That's right, I heard that. Still, when Darrell was in his prime he would smoke anyone except maybe Usain Bolt. Hell, he's still faster than a lot of NFL players.

If Grandma had nuts, she would be Grandpa. Both ARE and Rock were fumbling threats. Rock was consistent and ARE was garbage. I don't know which is a bigger indictment on Zorn, the "swinging gate" or the fact that Randle-El was the primary punt returner for both years.

Either way the Zorn era is dead. Thank God.

^ I wasn't supporting Zorn as a coach or Rock and ARE as returners. I'm on record in these pages as supporting the replacement of all 3.

Banks' return against Buffalo was electric and, needless to say, we could use more of that. But reports from camp have it that Banks puts the ball on the ground with some frequency. Fumbled kicks are major game changers. We want a returner who can take it to the house AND not fumble.

I'm not hopping on the Banks bandwagon until I see that he keeps the ball secure. Ball security was an advantage of both Rock and (mostly) ARE.

Yeah, let's not forget we fumbled returns twice during the game. Either one of those could have been a catastrophe, and we just got lucky. But then again, we got lucky all night.

1) Fumbled twice on returns = no turnover.
2) Second drive - only sustained due to "roughing the passer" penalty. Led to TD.
3) Grossman TD pass to Fred Davis was *very* close to picked off & pick-6.
4) All 300 pounds of Haynesworth flipped into air --> no injury.

Guess when it's your day, it's your day. Just saying that in a Cowboys game that's down to the wire, Banks better hold onto the ball..

I really hope that we find a place for Banks, because our return game has been a joke since Snyderato dumped B. Mitch, who went on to have 3 pro bowl caliber years for Philly. Not comparing Banks to B Mitch, but he's the best looking return prospect we've seen around here in years.

The swinging gate was a desperation play where more than half the team had no idea the ball was snapped. Randle El returning punts was premeditated, over, and over again.

I didn't see the game...but I have been saying that a guy this size has no place for a guy who is 145 lbs or so.
So the guy had a TD return...that is excellent...
But a single fumble will erase the TD return...and it is far more common to fumble than to return one for a TD...so this guy supposedly has issues with fumbles...well how many fumbles do we tolerate for this TD benefit?...I really would rather have a 10 yard average return with zero fumbles an a guy that can take it all the way but fumbles once a game (not saying thats true).

The fact that he is a shrimp only magnifies the fumbling risk...he is going to get killed at some point. I dont want to see that happen. I'd love to be wrong and I'd love for this guy to add 40 lbs of pure muscle without losing speed and become a WR too....I just dont think that is likely

The only concern for a player should be a history of injuries, not the possibility of injury. It's possible for even the most prototypical athelete to sustain injuries or have a career riddled with them. I don't think we have a special WR corps that would push him out of sticking with the team. It wouldn't be a waste of talent to allocate Armstrong and or Austin to the practice squad. That should aid in thier development even more. If any of the WRs on the active roster get hurt, one from the practice squad can be activated. And then there's always the possibility of signing talent from another team's practice squad. Therefore, Banks is worth the risk/reward.

I'd say this. SHanny and Allen have this guy on our team and playing. They let him return a fair amount of punts on Fri. They don't seem too concerned with his size. SO I am not going to.

Right before halftime he muffed a punt and then lost 5 yards after he picked up the ball.

That isn't a fumble. He also had several good returns with one being called back.

The Sports Bog pointed out that Randle-Fail had 102 total punt return yards last year. Banks had 97 in one game.

I just heard Banks on TheFan. Here's a couple of things he mentioned during the interview:

[B]*[/B] Said he never raced Chris Johnson, but they do know each other from East Carolina. He and John Wall are pretty tight too. They grew up together and have known each other since he was 6 years old; Wall was at the game Friday. I guess the little dance he did after he scored was a tribute to Wall.

[B]*[/B] Said he ran a 4.2/40 on his pro day in college. Said Tampa was the only other team he was considering.

I think Banks makes the team or at the very least goes to the practice squad. Seems like Shanny and Danny Smith are going to work with him on the fumbling and muff issues.

As I said earlier, I am concerned about his hands/ball control but excited about his speed and potential.

I hope he takes one more to the house (think he will) and makes the team. As to keeping him only as a PR...I don't think we will or have to. Set up a block/pick on a screen pass to get him into the open, or a quick inside slant to him and he could be off to the races on offense too.

If we put him on the practice squad...someone else WILL sign him.

I think that if he gets PS'd some other team would be more than willing to give him a shot as a return specialist.

I remember him. He was an excellent returner but a marginal receiver. At 180 lbs. he was also 20% bigger than Banks.

I agree with those who said,if he returns another TD on PR or even KR...He's a lock to make team. (I think he makes it regardless,unless he starts fumbling them over and over cause you can tell Shanahan loves this kid)

I agree. A compensatory pick would be awarded if that were to happen. If Banks is the better overall returner, it would be smart to have him on the active roster. Austin would be safer allocated to the practice squad. Right now, Armstrong and Roydell seem to be a lock.
