Even if we let Big Al do whatever he wants at NT we do not have the linebackers to play a 3-4. I said this as soon as it was announced as the direction that we were going.
The 3-4 is based on linebackers and we are at least an offseason or two away from getting the parts that we need to be effective.
Better earlier than later. We have Rak and Fletch. Just need a run stuffer and hope that Riley kid comes up. It would be a bonus if Rocky fits in well. |

It could be argued that Fletch isn't that great in the 3-4 either. He is going to need to be replaced sooner rather than later too. We are no where close and can someone explain to me why Carter is playing over Chris Wilson? Carter is useless in this defense. If I knew a synonym for useless that was more accurate, I would insert it to describe Carter. |

Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
Carter is definitely not a fit for the 3-4 and did anybody else notice how the guards got downhill and were able to get to Fletcher before he could make a play to stop the run? I noticed on several running plays that the guards were quick to get downhill and either chip or block him enough that he couldn't get to the running back.
I probably shouldn't have put the "fire Jim Haslett" part in the title because I'm not on that bandwagon but I figured enough people are already pissed at him that I might as well. My whole point, and the point that several people have already made, is that why does Shanahan say we are trying to win now when we know it's gonna take multiple years to transition to a decent 3-4? Going into the season I had my doubts that we could take last year's 4-3 starters and transition them into 3-4 roles and it looks like that's a big part of the problem now. So do we just have to sit back and accept that we won't be trying for the division title and that it's going to take multiple years to transition to an effective 3-4, or what? What we've seen so far is an attacking defense that everybody and their mothers' know how to counter, but we haven't seen Haslett adjust to the offenses' adjustments. Either way something needs to be done. |

Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
First off if we haven't hit the panic button already, we definitely did it today.
Hasletts defense would be great if we had either a great NT/secondary, or if we just stayed with the 4-3. I think the defense will improve. today to be honest we just played bad on both sides of the ball. and someone asked if theres a dominate NT coming out next year in the draft, and the answer is J. Powe from Ole Miss. |

Several of us argued to trade him last spring while his value was at its highest (coming off 11 sacks). With each passing game, his trade value drops. |
Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
Watching Sunday Night Football and i'm seeing a lot of 4-3 looks from two 3-4 defenses. I would think Haslett has got to see the writing on the wall and start incorporating a better mix for the personnel he has.

Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
Amazing how fast the pack will turn.
I'm going to start making a list of bums... week one was AH, week two was Doughty, week three is Rogers, Carter, Fletcher, and Haslett. I forget anyone? is there anyone left? lol. Look across the board I saw problems, I'm not sure if it was scheme or players not fitting the scheme or simply just players not doing their jobs. The players I saw giving up big plays, or not tackling; Buchanon Carter Rogers Hall crap I could list just about everyone on defense. It just seemed like when the team quickly became 14 points down every player on defense must have felt they had to make a play and ended up over reacting and on just about every play someone different broke down. |

I don't think his value necessarily drops in the eyes of 4-3 teams. He's a physical freak and is in great shape. He's being played WAY out of position. He's always been a hand in the dirt pass rusher in a 4-3. I think we should be shopping him big-time. He's a gigantic liability right now. Then again we could always move back to a 4-3. |

I think we have to. If we don't it seems awfully stupid. What we're doing isn't working at all. Not even close. Take the damn ego out of it and adjust. We simply do not have the talent or personnel to be playing a full time 3-4. |

Especially since we have a competent offense this year (though I don't know what the **** happened with Portis today). The NFC East is going to be wide open, the caoching staff (haslett) needs to get their shit in one sock. |

I thought I remember hearing Shanahan saying around the time he was hired that he would have a 3-4 defense, but wouldn't abandon the 4-3, using 4-3 looks. |

Joe Gibbs came here wanting to light up the scoreboard passing. He took a look around and decided the only way to win was with a power running game. Shanny needs to do some soul searching this week. He has painted himself into a "win now" corner. |
Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
We don't need to fire Haslett. We just need to pull Greg Blache out of retirement and hire him as a defensive assistant. Then when we lose against the Eagles, Packers, Colts, and Bears, we let Blache make the defensive calls against the Lions. Blache will somehow call a better game and the fans will say "See it's not the defensive line, it's the coach."

Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
We don't need to pitch it in just yet. The Redskins need to swallow their pride and come together as a team, both players and coaches. here is a list of the changes that need to happen.
1. The Haynesworth-Shanahan spat needs to be over. Start him, play him, and use his strengths for your the teams benefit. 2. Commit to the running game. Not for one play, not for one quarter, not for one half, the whole game. 3.The defense needs to attack. Pressure, pressure, pressure. 4. Play our youth. Devin Thomas need to play and develop as a widereceiver. He can only get bettter in game time situation. 5. Spread the ball around. Not Just Moss and Cooley. |
Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
The Haslett should be fired angle of this thread is pretty stupid. Shanahan came in here and forced a 3-4 down everyone's throat when a more aggressive 4-3 is all we needed. Not to mention the fact that he chose to focus on a pissing match with the most talented defensive player on the team.
If anyone should be fired, it should be Shanahan.
Wiser words...I think Shanny will stick around for a few seasons but from what I've seen it won't be anything special. He still doesn't know how to pick winners on defense (players or coaches) and obviously the offense isn't going to be so good we can just blow em out of the water. ...it will be really interesting to see if Allen lasts beyond Shanny? Who's really in charge lol? |
Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
listen...u freaking ''fire the coach'' fans are crazy... We won 4 games last year with this same squad...(except trent & mcnabb). Remember....Shanahan wanted this defense....and we are in year 1 of our transition!!! People please calm down with the firing crap....if you want to say our run D is garbage....fine. (u are correct).....we should run the ball more...(u are correct)...but firing a coach who inherited players that don't fit a new system is beyond crazy.....this type of impulsive reaction is why our franchise has sucked the past 15+ years....we have to show patience with this new regime...again..we are 7 months removed from going 4-12.....stop reading/listening to the hype about how many games we should win and understand...u are what ur record says...right now...we are only 1-2

Well said , we do not have the right players for the 3-4 . Hope we start running 4-3 , maybe on 1st & 2nd downs atleast . |

Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
Yea folks Haslett isn't going anywhere soon.. Bottom line is the skins just don't have enough talent to win right now, it's all because of Snyder and Vinny. We have old players that will be gone next season, our offense is better only bcuz of mcnabb and Williams.. It showed yesterday how good rent really is. DMac can't do it by himself anymore he's 33 not 26. It's hard to face the facts but we are in for another long season, 7-9 would be a good year for this team.

Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
Let's not forget what this team really is. Whatever shades of the Joe Gibbs 2007 playoff team faded away at the midway point of 2008 after a 6-2 start. Beginning at the 2-6 slide to finish that season, and counting last season plus this year's games, the Redskins have lost 20 of the last 27 games.
That puts us in the same class as the Browns, the Lions, the Chiefs, the Raiders and the Rams of the league. And it's going to take a while to get out. |

I just don't see why we brought in the 3-4 if all our players are 4-3 you know? You think they would have known that would have been a MAJOR set back.
Only person(s) that should be here on defense, 3-4 4-3, is Orakpo and Fletcher IMO, possibly Landry. I think everyone else for the most part is just a joke. |
Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
98 and 30 are the only 3-4 players. Maybe Moore.. Fletcher doesn't fit the scheme, he's out of place and his tackles are way down.

I'd throw Cariker in that mix along with Daniels. Both of them played good yesterday. It's just that we're stuck between a rock and a hard place with a dominant D-Lineman that's not excited about playing nose and a coaching staff that refuses to play him despite the fact that are current nose is getting manhandled. I swear we suck at that little space thats directly behind and in front of the football (read Rabach and Kemoeatu). Lorenzo should be getting a lot more reps. |
