Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas
Not busting on you but in theory we should give away our top draft picks for a lot of lower draft picks and still pick up some UFA's? Especially since this team has done better in later rounds.
All I was saying was that orher than Cooley, mcintosh, and smoot, we haven't seen any 2-3rd round picks be serviceable pieces to the teams success since 2000. Our first rounders other than Ramsey, gardner, and campbell have been good to great at times. I hope our new regime can keep up the luck with scouting the first round talent and finding UFDA or late round studs like Alexander and Peirce but will also be a better set of eyes for talent in the middle rounds if they keep said picks. |
Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas
This is very interesting. I guess Shanny just thought that DT would never 'get it' and decided if we were going to have a return specialist he would rather have Banks. If DT couldn't get snaps on the current receiving corps, then he was never going to. Amazing how a guy that could be so physically gifted could not make any strides on the field anywhere else. Oh well, maybe this was always apart of Shanny's master plan.

Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas
Yeah it just makes no sense to me. I don't care how we keep spinning the spin coming out of Redskins Park, ultimately Shanny is here to coach and put this roster in the best position to win games, not enforce personal vendattas. Is --excuse me, was-- Devin Thomas the first guy in the NFL to not give a 100% during practice? What was he doing that warranted being released so abrubtly, reading Playboy and eating a ham sandwich on the sidelines? I dunno, man.
As I said before, I believe with all my heart Mike Shanahan is a competent NFL head coach, I'm just not sure his methods are always in the best interest of this team. If anyone thinks Devin Thomas is done in the NFL you're crazy. |
Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas
He's just a Darnarien McCants redux. Yeah, he'll hang around on some team depth chart and flash some stuff but never be consistent. In two years, he's out of the leauge. Three max.
There! I have just assured him a HOF career. |
Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas
Remember now it is just year one for Shanahan. It wasn't his regime that deemed Thomas a 2nd rounder or a competent NFL WR. It is just very curious that a team that has struggled so much wideout would cut perhaps there best size/speed combo at the position. I was as psyched as anyone reading about the scouting reports about Thomas after the 08' draft, lets remember that Shanny took some less touted receivers in Rod Smith and Ed Mcaffrey to help build his offense in Denver. Then later was able to pick out Brandon Marshall. This guy has experience and knows what he's doing. If he doesn't think Thomas is the answer for the Skins I am inclined to believe him until he proves otherwise.

I really feel DT is not a Mike Shanahan type of player, that is all. Nothing personal against DT. Shanhan likes over achievers, DT is a classic underachiever. All the physical skills in the world and not enough drive to be a top WR. DT is content being on an NFL roster and collecting an NFL paycheck. I really feel Shanahan does not want to waste time with players that are not his type of player. Shanahan is trying to clear out the players that do not meet his standards. It is not some kind conspiracy or desire to get rid of all Ceratto players. Look at the benching and eventual release of Derrick Dockery. His days as a Redskin are numbered. Dockery is the opposite of the type of O-lineman Shanhan likes to have. Dockery is slow on his feet and not the brightest. |

T.O. was a 3rd round pick Chris Carter was a 4th round pick Gary Clark Supplemental draft Steve Largent 4th round and the list goes on and on.....
OK. Now let's look at receivers taken in the top 10 in the last ten drafts: 2009: Darius Heyward Bey (Bust), Michael Crabtree (jury still out) 2008: None 2007: Calvin Johnson (Stud), Ted Ginn (Bust) 2006: None 2005: Braylon Edwards (Decent), Troy Williamson (Bust), Mike Williams (Bust) 2004: Larry Fitzgerald (Stud), Roy Williams (Decent), Reggie Williams (Mild Bust) 2003: Charles Rogers (Bust), Andre Johnson (Stud) 2002: None 2001: David Terrell (Bust), Koren Robinson (Bust) 2000: Peter Warrick (Bust), Plaxico Burress (Stud), Travis Taylor (Bust) I see A LOT more red in that list than green, which has been my point that drafting WRs high is extremely risky business. I would prefer the Skins to invest high draft choices on the lines and on LBs to fit the 3-4. Address WR with a proven commodity via trade or free agency. |
Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas
I wouldn't go with the bust label with DHB yet. His deal was that he was a very long-term project. Not one year or two years.
Ultimately, that was the deal with Devin Thomas as well. We needed to spend longer developing him if we were going to bother with him at all. But taking Kelly and Davis in the same draft kind of killed that ability to develop the guy. It became more of a competition for playing time than a long-term development project. And his draft profile suggested he was going to lose that battle from the beginning. |

At this point, we may as well start Davis at WR to at least get him more targets in the offense. |

I'll always wonder what would have happended if instead of drafting 2 WRs we draft at least 1 if not 2 OL? |

Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas
you can't coach effort and motivation. we just need to study more in our drafting of WR...if that is even possible.
|
Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas
People forget Gary Clark and Ricky Sanders weren't drafted, both were USFL castoff's. What the Redskins need is an eye for talent, forget the round they are drafted in. Rod Smith wasn't drafted, Drew Pearson wasn't drafted, plus a host of other WR's with successful careers .

We will not take a WR with our 1st round pick and you can take that to the bank. |
Well DT is gone and at least he could stay healthy. How much you wanna bet the Skins are gonna wave buhbye to Kelly in the off season?
Kinda like when Colt got cut huh? He was a fan favorite but could not play. Went to Raiders and got cut there to. Maybe Shanny knows more about players than us the fans do. |
Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas
More professional, huh? Smells like a my-way-or-the-highway move by Shanny I guess.
Well when you been coaching as long as Shanny has It should be his way. Its not like Devon is Jerry Rice. He has not played more than a minute in the NFL. Hey he got a nice check for Thirty something catches in 3 years. |
Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas
What was the strategy here? In order to build trade value, other teams at least want to see him on the field. Using him on teams only killed his value.

Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas
Chris Horton is absolutely useless in coverage and Fred Davis was an unnecessary luxury with Cooley playing at a high level. Also consider that we selected Davis with DeSean Jackson still on the board!!! The only pick that I feel good about from that entire draft is Kareem Moore. Considering that Vinny drafted 10 players in 2008 and only has one starter to show for it, yes, I would call it our worst draft EVER!
If not the worst it was sure like way to waste 3 2nd picks. I like Davis he is a stud needs moree time on the field. Kelly is always hurt and DT look like Tarzan play like Jane. I would say thus far we blew that draft. |

Did I ever disagree with anything you said? I've been saying from day 1 that this is the deepest WR draft since 96 |
Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas
I wanted to see DT get a chance to play on the offense this season but I guess in the eyes of the coaching staff he was not better than the WR we had in front of him. GL DT your at a cross road in your career so whats it going to be? 2nd rd draft bust or free agent gem. Time will tell.

Sorry guys, I don't see Banks or Austin as a short or long term answer at WR for us. IF they were, they would not have been put off the active roster so soon. IF DT could be cut so easily after 4 games, that tells you something. |
Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas
Did I ever disagree with anything you said? I've been saying from day 1 that this is the deepest WR draft since 96
No you didn't. I was just pointing out that we should be wary of drafting wide receivers early in the draft. The ones that do make it usually take 2-3 years to show consistency, and many never reach their potential. The Skins could be a case study for the poor return from drafting WRs in the 1st two rounds: Desmond Howard, Michael Westbrook, Rod Gardner, Taylor Jacobs, and now Thomas and Kelly.
Speaking of the draft, with the likelihood that future rookie contracts will be severely restricted by the next CBA, there could be a big run of draft-eligible underclassmen declaring for the upcoming draft. If that happens, it could be an incredibly deep draft across multiple positions. |
Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas
I wonder who is going to pick him up...
He will probably end up like Taylor Jacobs and sit on the bench for a few years before giving up. |
Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas
Very suprised to see that they cut him just to promote a RB, its sad, but I trust in the FO much more then that scumbag Vinny! HAIL!!! LETS BEAT THOSE PACKERS!!!

Its not like the Skins have a bunch of picks or really seem to have cared about the draft in the past. Its tough to find later round diamonds when all the picks have been given away like Xmas gifts. Hopefully the current regime will view draft picks as something worth holding on to. |

Exuse me for a moment, I have to go to the bathroom and cry. This is the most messed up news that I have heard all week.
A guy that has proven that he can play on Sunday's is cut because they don't like the way that he practiced. I'm sorry but I will take that over a guy who can practice well but not play. (Taylor Jacobs) |

Everytime that he got the ball in his hands he did something with it. Don't forget the game that he had against the Saints. You cannot make plays if they don't give you the ball. I saw plenty of games last season where he was wide open and wasn't thrown to. He is gone and I cannot change it I guess that the Skins will get someone else. My opinion on him is my opinion and I will not budge on it though. |
