From what I understand while there's not always a huge difference, component can't handle 1080p so you would definitely want HDMI for blu-ray, plus the ease of having one cable is nice.
Speaking of Blu-ray's. Can a blu-ray player also play regular DVD's?

We as a group have had this fight quite a few times and IMO Comcast has better HD programing vs. DTV, plus HD On Demand. I have had both and I gladly stay with Comcast, well at least until FIOS comes.

Yes and buy your HDMI cables on-line not in the story, the difference in price is night and day.

Comcast has more HD channels?

I'm just going off my experience with Time Warner, they're pretty piss poor.

Time Warner is what my in laws have and it is awful and they have the option to switch to FIOS but don't do it becasue they have just always been with TW, blows my mind!

Anyways the whole who has the most HD channels is hard to nail down because everyone of them counts HD channels differential. Basically it all boils down to marketing gimmicks.

Re: Buying My First HD TV & Need Help

Comcast has amped up their HD lineup significantly, however, they cram as many channels into one thread as they can, and it tends to degrade the signal. At least they used to. I'm happy with my service from Comcast, just not happy with price. I'll be calling their customer retention line here soon to see what kind of price breaks I can get.

Ok, so I bitched enough and they are going to hook me up with a new HD/DVR receiver and up grading my other receivers.

Really? That's not the case in my area. Comcast has every channel in HD and the beauty of it all is HD cable channels are pegged to east coast time.

Always be nice but don't settle for nothing. Call in another time if you have to.

Yup. If you don't like what the current rep is saying, either get moved up the chain, or call back and get someone else. Someone will give you want you are looking for if you are patient enough to look for it.

I knew calling back or asking for a MGR would get better results I just hate calling places like this and talking to a F^&%ing computer. Then you get ticket and yell something into the phone and computer person thinks you want something else and starts all over.

Re: Buying My First HD TV & Need Help

I bought a 32 inch Toshiba HD LCD about three years ago. It's just a 720p, but I am still amazed by the picture quality. I watch bluray on it all the time and play my PS3 on it as well. I would love to have a bigger TV sometime when I pay the car off, but right now, I'm more than pleased with the TV I have. In fact, it has a better HD picture than my friend's Sony 40 inch LCD he bought a few years back.

Now, I realize the higher HZ the better moving objects look, but I'm not necessarily convinced that 1080p is THAT big of a difference when it comes to broadcast TV. As far as I know, they are still shooting mainly in 720p/1080i.

Yes you are correct, only 1080p you can see is through a blu ray player.

I'm just giving you a hard time. The 40 inch samsung was the biggest TV I could get for the space. The sides of the TV actually touch the inside of the cabinets.

So honestly, can any of you guys tell THAT much of a difference between watching a blu-ray movie on a 720p TV as opposed to watching it on an actual 1080p TV? I mean, I can definitely tell a difference between a regular DVD movie and a blu-ray, but I'm wondering if the refresh rate is really the bigger difference as opposed to the rate of the progressive scan?

Here is my little saying as far as HD goes for the casual viewer.

480p to 720p quantum leap; 720p to 1080p hop scotch

MTK 12-02-2010 12:24 PM

Re: Buying My First HD TV & Need Help

Probably depends on the size of the TV. The bigger ones you would probably see a difference. Anything under 50", probably not.

I think also has something to do with getting the right size TV for the viewing distance between the TV and the couch. Some get a TV that's too big for the area in which they are going to watch TV and it just doesn't seem to look nearly as good. I definitely feel for my living room, I could use at least a 40 inch TV, but probably nothing past that.

So what do you all think about the 3-D TVs? I can't afford one right now, but if I could, do you think it would be a good investment or is it just a fad?

I say fad. Every time I have tested one at the store I am like ok am I missing something?

3D TV is a stupid fad. Frankly, I don't know who in their right mind would want to watch anything in 3D but once in a blue moon.

Like 2-D. go to Best Buy they have them set up, even the sales guy was like yeah it is kind of dumb but some people just always want the latest and greatest.

I think when it's time for me to purchase another TV, I'm just going to stick with a 1080p (because they have went down in price and I want to see the full benefit of blu-ray) and just look for the refresh rates.

i used to think the same thing but some of the technology is pretty friggin sick man. 63" Class 1080p 3D Plasma TV 8000 Series | Samsung PN63C8000 - Plasma TVs thats the one i just bought, i don't have 3d glasses and don't plan on buyin any any time soon(the legit ones are over $100 btw) but the actually 3d picture is pretty cool. the reason i got this one wasn't even really because of the 3d it was basically because it was the biggest and baddest picture available, along with the new panosonic but that one only went up to 55 i think. but this tv has wifi and a ton of awsome apps. it even comes with windows media player installed on it. when we got back from costa rica we had people over and stuck in a thumb drive and just played a slide show of all the pictures then went to youtube and watched the videos from ziplining, i love this tv.

fd did you ever get you hd hooked up yet? watching football in hd in my own house for the first time was one of the greatest days of my life. and golf is amazing in hd as well. since i got my new tv the best sporting event to watch is hockey the picture is amazing.

and as far as blu ray's go the difference from 720 to 1080 might not be much on a 30 inch tv but on a 63 it's a pretty noticable difference.

Well I got to watch my first football game on my new TV with the HD working and VT kicked FL ST ass. This was after spending the evening fishing in the snow which was a first for me. We ate fish bites while watching the game. Nothing better then fish so fresh it flips its self.
