Re: Nnamdi Asomugha contract voided should Redskins go after him or do you think the price will be too high.
Also, who is to say we wouldn't be a contender WITH Nnamdi? We'd have one of the best secondaries of all time with Nnamdi, Hall, Landry and Atogwe. Easily the best in the NFL today, but I can't recall a secondary THAT strong at all 4 positions. Plus, the 3-4 is going to be dramatically improved in Year 2...defense could be one of the better in the league if we can plug that nose tackle hole with someone like Aubrayo Franklin.
We're also likely to add Cullen Jenkins at DE, who may want to play for us. Even without Nnamdi, if we can get a Cromatie or Ike Taylor...upgrade over Rogers. On the other side of the ball, we have great young depth at all skill positions. The O-line will continue to be the question mark, even more than QB. We could end up with a Ravens SB-winning model...dominant D, good running game and a QB who is surrounded with enough help to be effective. If the other thread is true and we'll actually be forced to spend MORE...we can definitely get all of these guys. Allen is eager to spend and he'll spend smarter to fill needs than the last regime. |
Re: Nnamdi Asomugha contract voided should Redskins go after him or do you think the price will be too high.
good points about dallas, forgot about their cap situation. They may clean house & make room for him though, JJ can find a way.
I would rather see Rogers get resigned for reasonable $ but I realize he wants more. Hope we don't get in a bidding war for Asom. & end up payin way more than we offered Rogers. I know he's far better than CR but I don't think that would be good for the new mgmt./new look skins. |
Re: Nnamdi Asomugha contract voided should Redskins go after him or do you think the price will be too high.
I definitely would not mind keeping Rogers for his true value, but he's convinced he's a top CB and wants top money. I'd rather let him walk and get a REAL top CB with that money. Preferably one that can catch a ball.
Nmadi is amazing but we have a pourous OL, and pretty much need an overhauling at nearly all positions excluding maybe 8 starting spots. We dont need a huge FA we need to sure up our trenches and get good character blue collar guys who enjoy football first. IMO.
This.....is exactly how i feel. Nmadi is an amazing player but we need to fill so many positions that is would be crazy to blow all of our cap money on one player. |
Re: Nnamdi Asomugha contract voided should Redskins go after him or do you think the price will be too high.
Don't read too much into the whole contender thing. I say that because Moneys the key to everything. Take Charles Woodson for example. Woodson, like Nnamdi was a pro bowl corner leaving oakland in his 8 year. Woodson said he wanted to leave for a team that would be a contender. He went to Green Bay who was coming off a 6-10 season. You can Not tell me he signed with them because he knew they were a super bowl contender, 5 years later they were but that season, no not at all, he by the way signed an 7 year $52 million contract, which was big bucks on that market, that year.
Look at AH for this case. He said he wanted to get paid and be on a contender. The Bucs offered him a few million more than us, and he said he came here because he believed we were contenders; The bucs offered about 2 million more in guaranteed money. Either way the guy was gonna get paid, and money was his first and most important factor.
All good points but to be fair GB still had Farve. We don't have anyone under center that gives us a chance to win. |

Last year's secondary lacked anyone who could play the free safety position, and Atogwe brings at least that. The best secondaries in football are probably Green Bay and Kansas City. Chicago is really good in the secondary. New Orleans is getting a lot better at that level, and Malcolm Jenkins and Jabari Greer and Tracy Porter and Pat Robinson would all be starters on the Redskins. Roman Harper isn't LaRon Landry, but that's not a big deal for them. The AFC kind of struggles at pass defense as a group, but even the proposed secondary you have above has three pass defense weak links between Atogwe, Hall, and Landry. Adding Nnamdi gives us a great player in our defense, but it doesn't make the unit better than the sum of it's parts. That's what the Raiders have found out over the years. You can have Asomugha and still struggle to defend mediocre passers. In terms of covering the other team's recievers, you're really only as good as your weakest link. Which for us, is Hall and our safeties. |

I don't see Philly as a major contender for Nnamdi. I see Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Washington, or a return to Oakland. He'd have to take less money to go back to Oakland because of their cap situation. Given the alternatives, that might be the best place to be. --EDIT-- Oh, and Tampa Bay. Aqib Talib is going to be difficult to replace otherwise. He's going to sign the biggest contract ever for a player 30 years or older, no matter where he signs. |
Re: Nnamdi Asomugha contract voided should Redskins go after him or do you think the price will be too high.
IMO signing Asomugha (a 30+ year old vet who'll command massive $$) would be a repetition of what has plagued this team for years. I have no doubt that Nnamdi can be a top shelf corner for another 3 years or so, but for the Redskins he's not worth the $40+ million in guarantees he'll likely get.
I like Nnamdi a lot as a person and as a player, but I don't think he's a fit here. |

Well, the extension they gave McNabb mid-season last year was kind of bizarre. Even though we didn't cough up a lot of guaranteed money and the years/dollars were misleading, it was definitely a head-scratcher considering Shanny and Co never really seemed sold on DM as a QB once the season really got rolling. |

Yeah but that deal was to simply hang on to his rights for this season so they can hopefully trade him for a pick. |

So, money aside, I wouldn't have any concerns in signing him. My concern would be our terrible record of bringing talented players and somehow the team doesn't make them work out. Now, it is hard to resist the thought of having a secondary with Nnamdi, DHall, OJ, and Landry. I think it'd be a pretty sick secondary having a complete shutdown corner (Nnamdi), ballhawking CB and FS (DHall/OJ), and a hard tackling SS (Landry). |

Fair enough. It just doesn't sit well with me that Shanahan's first big personnel move as our HC was possibly the worst of his career. Not exactly a confidence builder, especially when it involves the most important position on the field. I know the DM thing has been beaten to death so I'm not gonna rant, I just personally don't want to see us pay out 10's of millions for another vet over 30 years old when we have so many other pressing needs. Also, given D'Angelo's contract and the contract that Landry is going to be looking for after this year, we'd be ill-advised to tie up that much money in the secondary with Nnamdi. |
Re: Nnamdi Asomugha contract voided should Redskins go after him or do you think the price will be too high.
Who's going to ask for more money, him or Rogers?
Nnamdi won't need to ask for more money, he is going to get it and as it has been said there will be a bidding war for him. I think Rogers is going to ask for too much money, but he won't get anywhere near what Nnamdi will get. |
Re: Nnamdi Asomugha contract voided should Redskins go after him or do you think the price will be too high.
The market will quickly set the price for Rogers. He's dreaming if he thinks he's going to cash in big.
The market will quickly set the price for Rogers. He's dreaming if he thinks he's going to cash in big.
I think he can cash in big. There are a bunch of teams in the bidding war for asomuhga, rogers is close to next in line. Asomuhga will cash in big, then the losers of that battle will battle over carlos, joseph, cromartie, and taylor (and I do believe the one year differance between rodger and taylor will edge things towards rodgers). I think that with the trend in the league being to have 3-5 WR's on the field, teams will value having multiple solid DB's, and there seems to be a lack of DB talent in the league. Detroit and Houston come to mind as the biggest possible suitors. I'd even argue that the majority of teams out there are in the market for a solid corner. Especially considering how many WR's are now being used, the more DBs a team has the better. Out of the teams that spend money on free agents I'd say phili, Dallas, Tenn, TB, St. L, San Fran, Oakland, Baltimore, Chicago, Denver, and Cleveland are possible spenders. And with the way the new cba looks to be structured, the salary floor looks like it will be significantly raised by each team, so teams that normally don't like to spend might end up having to do so. I think Carlos will get a good deal for sure. I will be shocked if he doesn't get at least 6 mil a year. Nate Burleson got a 5 year 25 mil contract, the salary cap is going up, the salary floor is going up, and rodgers is significantly better than burleson IMO. Yes I know he has the dropsies, but he is a solid cover corner and a good tackler. We are mad at him for only having two picks, but that is not all that off from the rest of the league, and we are mad at him because he is good enough to be in good position to make plays on the ball. He is an asset any team would like to have. |

But not important. IMO shannahan is not a good talent evaluator. He has hit in the draft on Cutler, Marshall, Dumerville, Portis, Clady, etc... but he also seems to miss big alot. I heard him say that if cutler wasn't available he would trade up to get Laurance Maroney. Jarvis Moss, Ashley Lelie, George Foster, Tim Crowder were all terrible. His free agent pick ups havent seemed to consistantly pan out that well. In 2007 his trade for Dre Bly (tatum Bell George Foster and a 5th) wasn't terrible, but IMO it didn't pan out as Bly was released after 2 years with the team, and in 2007 literally every one of his free agent signings was terrible. He shelled out big money to Bly, Travis Henry, Daniel Grahm, and Brandon Stokley. He wiffed on all of them IMO. He also signed Sam adams, warrick holdman, DD Lewis (those were the next 3 big names) and 9 other guys that all just sucked. Shannahan's not the worst talent evaluator because he does hit on players, but I don't think he's good because he also seems to swing big and miss alot (Mcnabb is one of the many notches on that belt). |

Cullen Jenkins could be our poor man's version of Haloti Ngata. I think that we could have a good season with Carriker and Jenkins at DEs and a NT by committee tandem of Bryant/Nield/Jenkins. I don't think we should get Nnamdi, but as I have said, it is hard not to think how good our secondary would be with him in it. |

They are $18 mill over what the new CAP would be, so they are going to have to not only work on contracts to get down to the cap but also get enough below the cap to sign any FA's that are on the team and still have enough to sign him. Not saying it can't be done cause lord knows the Skins were supposed to be in CAP hell for many years and somehow each year they would get below and be able to sign FA's. |
