Neither Rivera nor the panthers gm were seen at gabberts pro day. blows up my mock.

I'd say Peterson and Dareus are the next two in line cause I feel like they are the two safest picks. If I were a gm and were picking I'd go with Dareus because I like D-line, but I've got an inkling that its going to be peterson. Reports are that they love him, and I don't see any reason for the first overall pick to lie about who they want.

They can still try to make someone think they're taking a guy so they can trade back.

They're going to have a private workout with Gabbert. Plus I've seen reports that Panthers reps were there.

Either way, I've still got them taking Gabbert. And Bills taking Cam

He's implying that it's too high to draft Locker at #10 but he'll be gone before the team's 2nd round pick. The only flawed thinking here is that if #10 is too high, shouldn't 12th overall be too high as well?

Re: 2011 NFL Mock Draft thread.

I saw the article about the Chargers trading back, but that doesn't really make sense to me. Seems more likely that they would trade up, considering it's a team that has one of the best offenses and defenses in the league last year. And has an extra 2nd round pick. And did the same thing last year (traded from 28 to 12). The Chargers need both a 3-4 LB and a 3-4 DE, so if they fall in love with either Cameron Jordan or Robert Quinn, or even a WR considering both Floyd and Jackson aren't signed long term.

Also, if there's a new rookie salary structure, I think that would make the current NFL Draft Value chart skewed in a way that the top picks should now have more value. But teams (particularly those with less...demonstrated aptitude) will still be looking to trade down, probably at last year's chart. meaning smart teams like SD, NE, Philly, are all going to be looking to game the system by moving up into higher picks that, for this year at least, will be improperly undervalued by the teams that hold them.

Wonder which team the Redskins will be...

so I gather you're saying that the top picks will cost less due to a rookie salary cap of sorts, and based on that teams that usually trade back to acquire picks, will instead look to move up to nab top picks?

That could be the case, or maybe a better way of putting is that such a rookie wage scale might entice teams like NE to move up whereas before they deemed it too expensive.

If that's the case, it would be good for us, simply because we need early round picks, regardless of how much they're paid. If NE gave up its 17 & 28 for our 10 & a late round pick, I'd be ecstatic. Trading in either direction can be beneficial, as long as you don't get screwed. Thankfully, Allen has been very good at dealmaking, the McNabb trade might be the only exception.

You take a gamble with older veterans. You win some you lose some. Hindsight is 20-20. It's easy to criticize now that it didn't work out. I think we will do well in the draft this year. Much better with Allen and Shanny than with anyone else we've had in recent memory.

Allen doesn't do the dealmaking. He is an overtitled salary cap manager. Imo, the dealmaking we did last year wasn't good. Carriker was probably worth a 6th rounder, so we saved that, McNabb was worth probably about a 6th rounder (rex grossman beat him out for the starting job), and Brown was worth about a 5th rounder (split time with Heyer, and when he played he really was only serviceable). so we lost a 2nd, a 3rd and a 4th but saved a 5th, a 5th, and a 6th? Thats dogshit. I really don't want to hear that either McNabb or Brown was worth more. Tell me that again next year when neither of them are on the team. I was being by giving a 5th for either.

edit: worst of all, the McNabb deal was given the the mofoing eagles. Nate Allen and whoever else will haunt us for the next ten years.

It's their job to get it right and not screw it up. There really wasn't much upside to the McNabb deal. You don't make blockbuster trades for a single 33 year old when your team is 15 pieces away from being good. Even if there was upside and it just didn't pan out it was still a horrible deal. Screw hindsight. You don't put your team in a hole like that, that's your job. You don't see Bill Bellicheck/Ted Thompson making blockbuster misses.

Jamaal Brown was probably a good trade at the time, but that didn't work out. There was upside, just didn't pan out.

Belicheck has also been with the organization and has a stable gameplan and framework which works well for the franchise. Shanny and Allen haven't been afforded that length of time to get to know the personnel that well and get an established system in place. You are comparing apples to rice-a-roni. I sense that J.J. Watt wants to prove he'd be an elite pro. It reminds me of Clay Matthews. He was a solid but not a dominate prospect coming out of USC and it wasn't widely known that that he posessed such great swagger. The rest is history.

One thing I find funny about college players coming into the draft is that you'll often see somebody who gets drafted lower for not being "explosive" a la Clay Matthews. The consensus with him was that he was an intelligent football player, but lacked the top end explosiveness that Cushing and Orakpo had.

Two years later and yes you're right, because of his "explosiveness" the rest is history.

I also like J.J. Watt, only I see him completely different than I saw Matthews. Watt is as explosive as you'll see coming off the line for a 290 pound tackle. He also works harder than anybody on Wisconsin (big Badger fan), this guy could be the gem in this draft who's being overlooked because of the big 3 in Dareus, Fairley, and Bowers.

skinster 03-27-2011 01:10 PM

Re: 2011 NFL Mock Draft thread.

1. Panthers-Gabbert- When it comes down to it, I think a new coach will feel too pressured to pick a QB with the top pick. I don't think most teams will want Newton this high.

2. Broncos-Dareus- Normally I'd pick Bowers here because Fox is gonna want his peppers. But then I realized that he is financially committed to Dumerville. Taking Bowers would limit Dumerville, but taking Dareus would improve him. Plus Denver's Dt's are a huuuuge joke.

3. Bills-Newton- Just because thats what all the reports are saying. Gailey is historically transparent in his drafting.

4. Bengals- Fairley - Bengals don't care about character issues, and this guy is a freak. Their young WR's stepped up when given the chance to start last year, and I feel like they have more faith in their DE's than DT's. Zimmer seems similar to Williams in that they don't like starting rookies (Dunlap didn't start besides his 10 sacks), and their 4-3 philosophy relies heavily around the secondary (which they have 2 great corners). Their veteran DT's don't consistantly start games, or make statistical impact. Plus a pass rushing DT will help the DE's in their job.

5. Cardinals- Miller- Wisenhunt sees the importance of LB's coming from Pittsburgh (and the loss of Dansby).

6. Cleveland- Green- Need a WR baaaadddddddd. Shurmur needs to test McCoy.

7. SF- Peterson- They can't pass up the best player in the draft here.

8. Tenn- Amukamara- They are really dying for Fairley to drop here (which might happen because I think the bengals might take a DE-Bowers or Quinn). Their head coach values the line (offense and defense) heavily. I don't see them going DE two years in a row though. Two of their corners had 100 tackles. To me that indicates alot of completed passes. Amukamara probably 2nd on their wish list, but still fills a need.

9. Dallas- Smith- Jerry Jones doesn't want Romo running for his life anymore.

10. Washington- Jones- Without moss, we are just screwed at WR. I'd LOVE for us to go DL here but IMO that is long term thinking, which is not something anyone in the Redskins organization does. Plus the combine and speed is something Shanny seems to really value.

alt redskins pick-Bowers. Would probably play a 3-4 pass rushing DE. This sketchy injury situation combined with Bowers being a one year wonder I think will make him drop though. I'd personally prefer to roll the dice on him, or take someone else like Cam Jordan or JJ Watt.

Re: 2011 NFL Mock Draft thread.

I really hope we don't re-sign moss if Julio is the guy we take. If Shanny wants to address the Receiver position, than give it a fresh start. The worst thing that could happen is we get Andrew Luck throwing them the ball in 2012.

Personally, I would say go with the best defensive player that the coaches agree on at #10, and in the early second go with Christian Ponder or Jake Locker.

I wouldn't take "swagger" into account when looking at a prospect. However the fact that there are rumors of New England liking him would certainly entice me. Mayo, McCourtey, Wilfolk, Warren, Seymour. Virtually every defensive player they've gotten their hands on early through the draft during the past decade has turned out to be golden.

Re: 2011 NFL Mock Draft thread.
^ Quinn Is better than those 2 IMO
Even if that is true, we don't have much of a use for Quinn. Our use of Lorenzo Alexander as an OLB in Jim Haslett's 3-4 defense indicates to me that our second OLB is primarily a run defender/pocket collapser rather than a speedy pass rusher.

To me Quinn is a speed guy. He is 10 lbs lighter while being 3 inches taller than alexander, which doesn't fit the mold as to what will get playing time opposite Rak.

Honestly though, I don't believe in Quinn at all. He has sat out a year, but more importantly his production wasn't really even that good. He had two forced fumbles, zero interceptions, and only 35 solo tackles. Even more importantly, look at who he had sacks against. 1-Citadel, 2-East Carolina, 3-UVA, 3-Duke, 1-Georgia Southern, 1-BC. He failed to rack up any sacks against Uconn, Georgia Tech, Florida State, Virginia Tech, Miami, NC State, and Pittsburgh in their bowl game.

His combine numbers aren't even that impressive. To me it just seems that there is no way he should be taken in the top 10.

Also on a side note. Bowers had a sack in every game except for Presbyterian (which he didn't play) and South Carolina. His schedule was harder, and he had 5 more sacks.

Bowers is a top 5 talent that I predict will drop due to logistical reasons. Whoever snags him will get a gift. I really feel stupid for not placing him somewhere in the top 10, but every team I felt had a much bigger need to fill.

I'm sorry but...........:nono:
You think the 31st ranked defense plans on drafting guys who only fit what they had this year? Which is arguably absolute garbage? Lorenzo Alexander is a special teams hero and nothing more. Robert Quinn has 10 sack potential, that's what the Redskins should be looking at. Not an over sized guy who's all heart and no talent.

It should also be noted that Bowers will not be an OLB. Teams drafting him would be teams that are looking to put his hands in the dirt as a 4-3 end. It would be a mistake to draft him in my opinion, regardless of how good he is.

Also on Robert Quinn, you're right it's a risk. But I think there's a reason his draft stock hasn't dropped compared to Marvin Austin who was in the same position.

LZO is a very good football player but he's not a starting OLB on a good NFL Defense imo.

I agree that Alexander (and our defense) is junk. I just find it odd that Alexander started over Chris Wilson and Andre Carter, two superior pass rushers. This tells us there is a mold of player the coaches are looking for. And I do think that both Haslett and Shannahan are stubborn enough to keep the mold they intended.

I agree that Bowers is a natural 4-3 DE and doesn't seem to translate well into the 3-4. But if he were to seen as too talented to pass up, I envision him as a DE in the mold Mario Williams of Wade Phillips new defense.

And I believe Quinn to not be taken in the top 10, not for the suspension (even though that does add negativity to his stock), but for his lack of production. He beat up on alot of really bad teams, but had zero sacks against any good teams (except for Boston College). His 2 forced fumbles and all his other statics are not overly-impressive whatsoever. He didn't wow anyone at the combine. And to top it off he is rusty from not playing. I just don't see the hype.

If Bowers fell to us it might be trade down time.

Agreed. Same thing applies to Fairley. But something tells me that Dallas will jump the gun first. Their positions of need seem to be of greater value later on in the draft. Except for Amukamara. But something tells me that they will hope from a rebound of Jenkins and the development of their younger guys. Jerry Jones doesn't easily give up on his personnel that others say he needs to replace (see marion barber, julius jones, wade phillips, marcus spears, Terrell Owens, Tony Romo, roy williams, etc...)
