bulger and smith may be a fit if the price is right.
Bulger is old enough to be most of our grandfathers. He's going to get his AARP card and a cane next year. The only way we should sign him is to a one day contract with the agreement that he promptly retires.

Alex Smith SUCKS. Hasselbackbeck is getting old and injury prone. Kolb costs too much and I'll never be okay with a QB trade from the Eagles again. Carson Palmer can eat me. VY has great upside comparatively but a weak psyche. None of these are viable options for us IMO. Except Orton, who no one but me and Skinsfaninok talk about since he's not officially being shopped. We need a QB in the draft. Trading for a FA QB ain't gonna do jack, JACK! Kaepernick. WINNING!!! All I'm saying...

Re: Skinsfaninok's Available NFL QBs Poll

Colin Kaepernick:

Overview
Versatile, athletic, and productive leader who has led Nevada as a four-year starter. He has accounted for over 14,000 yards and 140 TDs (59 rushing, 81 passing) in his storied career and the first player to ever pass for more than 2000 yards and run for more than 1000 yards in three consecutive seasons. 1st Team All-WAC in 2010 (and Co-Offensive Player of the Year), Manning Award Finalist, and leader in most all offensive categories. In 2009, was a 2nd Team All-WAC performer who accounted for 37 TDs (17 rushing, 20 passing) and 3,235 total yards (1183 rushing, 2052 passing). Selected in the 2009 Amatuer Draft by the Chicago Cubs as a pitcher and has been clocked in the high 90s. Was WAC Offensive Player of the Year in 2008 and WAC Freshman of the Year in 2007.

Senior and Shrine Bowl invitee.
Strengths
Strong arm with great velocity and very accurate - career passer rating of 143.2 - also able to be accurate on the run and as well as in the pocket. Height allows great visibility. Has developed into a pass-first player, despite great rushing stats (which is an artifact of the pistol offense that takes advantage of his running ability.) Makes excellent decisions, with just 23 career interceptions in 1238 throws with 81 TDs in 50 games. Has great leadership and competitive nature that is necessary in a quarterback. Extremely durable and tough considering the number of carries and games he has played.
Weaknesses
Nevada's pistol offense has not prepared him with drop-back reads that NFL QBs must make and has limited his experience under-center. 'Wind-mill' style throwing motion slows his release. Quality of competition may also figure against him in GM's minds.
Projection
Late 1st or early 2nd round. Had solid performance at Senior Bowl. Showed great athleticism at Combine - probably early second round, with slight chance for late first.

I can see Shanny liking this guy.

I appreciate your kind words. I think it will probably be a long shot to actually draft him but I think it would be incredibly smart for us. I just feel like I see a young Donovan McNabb in him when he extends plays.

I don't think the people who picked kolb considered the fact that it will cost us our 1st round pick to get him. If they are all free then i would take kolb also...he's still young and has not proven to be good or bad yet. Who would not prefer that over a bunch of retreads if the cost is equal?

Yeah, like I said earlier in this thread, my main reason for putting Kolb in here was to see if people were willing to give up a high draft pick (possibly more than one) for him. And I guess they are.

I am guilty of that. I clicked the poll and then read the thread (whoops). My vote for Kolb does not take price into account. I'll bet that this is true of others.

Yeah because if they clicked Kolb knowing what they would have to give up they are flat out stupid. Once in a lifetime is bad enough. Don't need McNabb 2.0 the following year. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

I picked Young, because of raw talent...will he be another headcase like Haynesworth?
Maybe, but at least Haynesworth didn't cost us a pick or anything, the only thing lost was dollars and a year of annoyance.

But the truth is, the best QB of the bunch including our currrent roster is none other than....Donovan McNabb. Especially if you are also drafting a QB of the future.
I can't believe any of you are suggesting going into the season with Rex as a starter...kinda reminds me of the Florida Redskins days with Danny Woeful (just not quite as bad)

Yea this is what I mean. I know Smoot intended everyone to factor in cost but i just don't believe that all those people who clicked on him would trade our #1 pick for him.

yea i just think people clicked his name before they completely understood. Either that or we got a lot of guys on this board ready to toss #1 picks around...

I also am guilty of that, I clicked on Kolb, but realize I chose him cause he asked who we would like to see, no way do i take any of the listed QB's for a number one draft pick.

I'd take Bulger. He's probably the best pure passer out of the group. I'd consider Palmer but that would take draft picks so he's a no. The rest of them you can have. Not sure why everyone is high on Kolb casue he's done nothing special in his starts. VY is a total waste of time cause he's simply not mentally tough enough to be an NFL starter. Smith has shown he's never going to be anything but below average. Hassleback is too old.

Great idea. Hasselbeck will get hurt by week 4 and Locker will be thrown into the fire before he's ready, after not being able to work out with the coaches though the lockout.

5-11 will be a feat.

I'm still saying that if the training camp is abbreviated or missed altogether from the lockout, which appears to be more than likely at this point, the best route is to bring back a QB who already knows the system and definitely avoid a rookie taking snaps in the first half of the season. This applies to all teams.

McNabb makes the most sense and if not him, Grossman.

Very logical points, I agree. We need to shore up the lines, which is a major weakness on both sides of the ball. Plus the learning curve will be a bit quicker than a skill position such as QB or WR.

Another MAJOR reason we should not use a pick on a QB.

Reinforce the line and if we really need a new QB after this season, get him next season.

Who knows, if McNabb is not running for his life and being smashed into a fine powder every game, maybe he'll put up the numbers he has in the past.

He was running VERY well early in the season. We were all commenting on how he looked better than he has for years. Then he developed a distinct limp, then he was pulled altogether. I do believe his health and lack of protection had a major role in his decline. Early in the year, the Texans game especially, he was hitting deep balls (which require time and protection) with ease. Later, he was running for his life.

Trent Williams did a great job protecting him on that side, but the rest of the line needs attention like we gave LT last draft. Center is a must-upgrade, that's where many of his hits came from, right up the middle...even he wasn't being tripped by Rabach.

The same will apply to Grossman...look at how quickly he was hit on that disastrous debut against Suh. Sure, a QB should not hand off the ball to a defensive lineman, but he had no time to react. He played well later on, so he does have a good grasp of the system and with protection and time, I think we could minimize the "Rex plays" and like the Bears, win in spite of him.

A better line will also enable Shanahan to implement his greatest weapon, his running game, which will put less pressure on Rex or Donovan.

I say, get the best available O-lineman at #10...no matter the position! Even another LT-quality tackle can be used on either side and Trent has experience at both ends in college. A guard or center at #10? Who cares about draft history, it's what we need.

With the uncertainty about FA this year, teams should take the exact opposite approach as normally: instead of taking the best available player, drafting for needs and filling holes will need to take precedence. We have specific needs and we should make sure we fill them for sure, not knowing if/when/how FA signings will happen. We should not count on FA this year, lets plug the holes and get these guys rostered now. I know they can't work out with coaches, but nothing will stop them from attending London Fletcher's "non-team, unofficial, pick-up game mini-camps" and working out with the guys voluntarily.

You're welcome, I'll gladly accept this post of the month award. :D

Whoa whoa whoa. When did the learning curve become quick for QB's and WR. Maybe it's getting quicker for receivers and a little faster for QB's, but you still need 2 to 3 years to be able to run a full playbook with a rookie QB.

Offensive Lineman, if they're good take half a season before you can call them impact players. QB's on the other hand, even if they're good the first year are protected and limited when it comes to play calling.
