What a tragedy

Re: Official Nationals and Orioles 2011 Thread
Damn, now they're saying they believe he committed suicide
|
Re: Official Nationals and Orioles 2011 Thread
That is craziness. Can't believe Flanny killed himself. He was regarded s the "funniest guy in baseball". RIP Flanny.
|
Re: Official Nationals and Orioles 2011 Thread
Kurkjian was saying Flanagan hadn't been the same person since leaving his role as Orioles GM. But I didn't realize it was so bad or that he had serious financial issues.
Damn shame. Ravens will have a moment of silence for him tonight |
Re: Official Nationals and Orioles 2011 Thread
RIP. just tragic
|
Re: Official Nationals and Orioles 2011 Thread
R.I.P. Suicide is never the answer.

Re: Official Nationals and Orioles 2011 Thread
Nice return by Strasburg. 5 IP. 2 Hits, 0 Runs, 0 Walks, 4 Strikeouts
Nice return by Strasburg. 5 IP. 2 Hits, 0 Runs, 0 Walks, 4 Strikeouts
And a perfect bunt that lead to a throwing error and run.
Very happy with the way he looked tonight. I was skeptical on the idea of bringing him back up at all this season, but if the docs have cleared him and he feels good that's all that really matters. |
Re: Official Nationals and Orioles 2011 Thread
watched my first game of the season... for about 5 innings ;)
guy looks as good as ever. I'm happy to see that. |
Yeah he def looked good tonight. Lotta people giving the Nats shit about bringing him back this quickly but he had no setbacks and the timetable went according to plan. And he looked good out there today. Sucks that the bullpen blew the lead but since the seasons over we need to get a look at the young talent they brought up.

Re: Official Nationals and Orioles 2011 Thread
Great finish for Strasburg to close the season. Nats ended very strong, wish they could finished at .500 though
Meanwhile, what an incredible finish to the MLB season early Thursday morning with Longoria's HR |
Re: Official Nationals and Orioles 2011 Thread
Future is definitely looking bright for the Nats. I wasn't just impressed with Strasburg's return from Tommy John surgery, Brad Peacock looked good in limited action as well and so did Chris Marrerro. I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do next season. I also liked that they finished with a winning record against the Phillies this year after sweeping them in that 4 game set. Very impressive.
|
Re: Official Nationals and Orioles 2011 Thread
I suppose he's still mulling his options, I've heard the Nats are still interested though.

Hey SmootSmack, do you know any baseball insiders? If so, any word on Fielder?

I"ll be honest...I never really had a good relationship with the baseball insiders at the worldwide leader But that's neither here nor there. I haven't heard anything definitive on Fielder yet |

But that's neither here nor there. I haven't heard anything definitive on Fielder yet
Understood, just thought I'd check. I don't really follow any baseball blogs or anything, so all I've heard lately is that some guy who may be less than reliable tweeted that Nats have a deal in place but are just working out the details. Honestly, as a Nats fan, I guess I'd like them to sign him but it's not the end of the world for me if they don't. At this point I just kind of want to know where he's going to end up. |
Re: Official Nationals and Orioles 2011 Thread
Maaaan, if the Orioles swoop in and get Prince....
|
Re: Official Nationals and Orioles 2011 Thread
Maaaan, if the Orioles swoop in and get Prince....
That really wouldn't surprise me, they really need to do something to get the the fans excited. Plus, I think it makes more sense for him to go to the AL.
|
Re: Official Nationals and Orioles 2011 Thread
I am a "lean against" on signing Fielder. It very likely screws up the long term makeup of the team and unless the Lerners change their ways it almost certainly means no Zimmerman extension.
|
Re: Official Nationals and Orioles 2011 Thread
Well...he's going to Detroit. 9 years $214 million
|
Re: Official Nationals and Orioles 2011 Thread
Well...he's going to Detroit. 9 years $214 million
I jsut heard that. Is it definite? Oh well, I kind of wanted him in DC, but not for that kind of money.

Nor that long. |
Re: Official Nationals and Orioles 2011 Thread
Nor that long.
You're right, the length of the deal has got to be the craziest part.
|
Re: Official Nationals and Orioles 2011 Thread
Yeah I'm glad the Nats didn't give him that kind of deal anyways. Plus I wouldn't have been happy about it if it meant no Zimmerman extension.
|
Re: Official Nationals and Orioles 2011 Thread
214 million for a designated hitter? Are they ****ing stupid? <----rhetorical question
What idiots. |
Re: Official Nationals and Orioles 2011 Thread
Don't get me wrong...conservatively they'll get a monster for 3-4 years but a guy that size and with that type of makeup can't be expected to stay healthy into his 30's. They're going to get old pretty fast in 5 years and be tied into a hell of a lot of money to be so.
|
Re: Official Nationals and Orioles 2011 Thread
With no DH in the NL, that deal definitely would not have been worth it for us. Kind of nice though that both Pujols and Prince are out of the NL
|
Re: Official Nationals and Orioles 2011 Thread
I still cant believe the Nats gave Jason Werth 100+ million. effing idoits

It's not even that. You don't pay 200+ million for a DH. That kind of dough you pay to a guy who's going to provide offense and defense. A Barry Bonds, and Alex Rodriguez, a Ken Griffy, Jr. (in prime). Detroit is going to be begging people to take this guy in about 5 years. Make no mistake, I thought the Pujols contract was even worse than this one. |
I still cant believe the Nats gave Jason Werth 100+ million. effing idoits
They overpaid and knew they were doing so. That was a one off deal to elevate the perception of the club. Of course then Werth went and just sucked so it worked out about as bad as it could have. If he recovers to be closer to what he was in '10 then the deal will have been worth it. Remember... the Nats were a laughing stock until they pulled the string on that deal. Ohhh and the Lerners are the richest owners in baseball...they can afford it...if they want to. Before the Werth deal Fielder doesn't even consider DC as a destination. |

Which is exactly why I blame owners come negotiating time and they claim they are losing money. Yeah, because you are paying bums like this 100 million dollars. DERP |
Re: Official Nationals and Orioles 2011 Thread
Sounds like Bryce Harper will make the opening day roster if he does well in Spring Training. Not too sure if I like that or not, especially when it comes to arbitration, but we'll see.

I watched Bryce Harper play a decent amount in harrisburg and i dont think he is ready yet. |
Re: Official Nationals and Orioles 2011 Thread
Not only that, but I really don't want the arbitration clock to start clicking. If they're going to do it, the need to hold off until June. I agree though, he needs more AB's in the minors. I believe I read he has less than 600?

Re: Official Nationals and Orioles 2011 Thread
Anyone plan on heading to the Nationals home opener?
|
Re: Official Nationals and Orioles 2011 Thread
Anyone plan on heading to the Nationals home opener?
Yup, I'll be there with my dad. We've been to every home opener since they moved to DC. It's definitely my favorite tradition.

Re: Official Nationals and Orioles 2011 Thread
Yah...expectations are high this year. Not sure if they're quite "there" yet enough to make much of a difference in the NLE. But at least we enter the season with some kind of excitement.
|
Re: Official Nationals and Orioles 2011 Thread
And on Harper: there is ZERO chance he makes opening day roster. It would be a tremendously stupid business and baseball move. Why waste a entire year of team control when he is 23 to have him for an extra month or two when he is 20? Won't happen. He could hit 23 HRs in spring training and he'll still start in AAA.
|
Re: Official Nationals and Orioles 2011 Thread
Yeah I'm excited for this season, will be the first time we go above .500 most likely. As long as players like Morse can keep jacking and LaRoche gets back to his normal play, we should be good.
Not too sure about the whole playoff talks, unless we have two wildcard teams, but nonetheless I'm still excited. They happen to air the first spring training game on 106.7 the fan on my birthday, so I'll be listening to that for sure! |
