does anyone use the nike+/ipod?
Yeah, I use it and like it when my iPod doesn't crap out, but it's on it's last leg. I ran a half marathon last year that didn't have clocks set up at the mile markers so I was using that to pace myself but it just stopped tracking my distance after about 10 miles. At least my music kept playing.

I like that you can set it for distance, time, or open-ended, etc. It syncs with your music, so when you've reached a certain point the music fades out and a voice comes on telling you "4 miles" or whatever. I can hit a button and it will audibly say my distance, time, and pace so I can keep my eyes on the road. |
Re: The runners thread
Runkeeper makes a good app. I've been using it for a few months. I like having the current pace announcements set to every 1/2 mile.

Mapmyrun is solid. I used to use that, but then I got the Nike GPS app, which is fantastic. For Xmas my Dad gave me the Garmin FR60 running watch which comes with a pedometer and heart meter, and you can wirelessly link it to your computer so it automatically uploads all your run statistics. You can then do side by side comparisons with your various workouts and track your progress. Pretty awesome little gadget. I've got less than a month until the Cherry Blossom 10 miler!! |

Re: The runners thread
I'm running my first Warrior Dash on Saturday and couldn't be more excited!!! I'm not worried about the running part since it's only 3miles, but I'm starting to get a little worried that I didn't do enough training (aka none) for the obstacles. Anyone else ever done one of these before?
If it goes well I'm probably going to sign up for Tough Mudder in the fall. Around 12miles, and 25 obstacles involving ice, electricity, and monkey bars. I figure that will be a good way to end my 20's. In the mean time, I've decided that I'm starting to get fat again, so I'm also training for the Baltimore 10-miler next month. On Sunday morning I was able to get through 5 good miles in about the same pace that I was running last spring, so I think I'll be good to go. |
Re: The runners thread
I want to try one of those obsctacle type races sometime. Looks like a lot of fun.
I'm working on 10k training right now. |
Re: The runners thread
I did the Tough Mudder last October (Wintergreen) It was a blast. We took our time, didn't worry how long it was taking us (4 hours). You'll have a blast at the Warrior Dash. A few of my friends have done it and loved it.
If you're ever looking for a good training schedule check out Hal Higdon's website (not a porn star, I promise). That's what I use for my half-marathon and marathon training. He has training for all users from 5ks to marathons. |

I did the Warrior Dash last year, and I'm doing it again this Sunday. The obstacles are more of an annoyance than an actual challenge. Nothing particularly hard, but some are messy. The Tough Mudder on the other hand, is a pain in the ass. Four times as long, and the obstacles can ruin your day. |
Re: The runners thread
I have used Higdon's stuff before. His approach is solid. I currently use an approach developed by Furman University that incorporates a little less mileage but subs in harder workouts and very defined paces. It is a basic setup of speed/tempo/long runs but each is very paced and takes determination. I find that the less mileage is better for my knees and lifestyle while the harder workouts, when completed, really pump your confidence.
The program is called Furman FIRST and I have a bunch of training schedules for various race lengths. You can google them but many have been taken out of circulation as they have published an entire program that they now sell. The Furman stuff is more for people who've been running a fair amount and are looking to dial back the time commitment without sacrificing performance. I used to run consistently in the 30-45 miles a week range and have that dialed back to 20-30 most of the time. Even less now that I am just in maintenance mode. Yay for that! |

Ran a 25k trail race today in 2:28:19. The elevation gain was about 2400 feet. I improved my time from last year by 40 minutes. I'm starting to get some decent stamina now for these long runs.

Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk 2
Yeah that's the deal you have to make with yourself. Less running...harder workouts. The first 1/3 of the workouts will generally be positive because they aren't too out of whack. The next 1/3 with leave you contemplating finding alternative activities to do with your time. The final 1/3 should be ok again. Not to make them out to be so hard but if you simply power through you become a better runner in general because most workouts seem easier in the future. In my experience if you do the workouts to pace...you hit your goal time almost without fail. |
Re: The runners thread
My advice to everyone in this thread is to avoid overtraining and to make sure you dedicate 3 days a week to core strength. I developed a severe overuse injury while training for a half marathon and also was neglecting my core. The result: tibial nerve release surgery performed in November. No idea when I'll be able to run again...

How great is this weather for running?!?! I put in a good 8 miles around one of the lakes in Columbia this morning in prep for the Baltimore half marathon. I thought it was a good sign when the very last song on my iPod before I got home was Hail To The Redskins, but clearly it was just a coincidence.

Re: The runners thread
Ouch! I had my first big fall as a runner this evening and I kind of feel like I was hit by a car!
I clipped my toe on the sidewalk and tried to maintain my balance for a few feet, but it was like I was ice or something, and I ended up sprawled out on the concrete with a scraped up knee and palms, and I jammed the crap out of my left middle finger (aka, The Bird). I'm shocked my iPod still works because I wear it on an arm band and rolled right over it. Then, to top things off, about a mile later I was literally almost run over by a deer. It was sprinting across a busy street and crossed the sidewalk about 2' in front of me. I didn't even see it until it was right in front of my face. Actually, it was so close that a few of the cars on the street slammed on their breaks and gave me some pretty big "Oh S!" faces, which I returned in kind. Damn, tonight was just supposed to be an easy 3 mile run. |
Re: The runners thread
That's pretty crazy with the deer

Re: The runners thread
Hey fellow runners. I usually try to run 8-10 miles a week, usually in 2 - 2 1/2 mile increments. Id been doing this for the last year and never had a problem. But the last 2 weeks ive gotten pains in my feet and in the last week ive got serious aches in my left heel of foot. Worst in the mornings. Ive only been able to run twice this week, and its gotten worse. Ive spoken with a long distance worker I work with and she said its probably Planter Fascitis and i should see a doctor.
Has anyone experienced this before? Whats the recover period and treatment? Ive looked online, but want to see if anyone had a real account of the injury. Thanks |

Thanks
I had the same thing last year around Thanksgiving, my pain was more in the middle of my foot though. Took a month off from running and I was ok. The key is to stretch really well and ice down after a run. But unfortunately, rest is the only cure. If you're in pain, don't run, it will only get worse. |
Re: The runners thread
That sucks, man. Rest it, stay off your feet as much as you can, take some ibuprofen a couple times a day if your okay with it, ice it if starts to get inflamed. If you start running again, once it's gone, think about investing in a new pair of running shoes. Also, if you're running on concrete sidewalks you may want to find a different terrain type. If that's easier said than done then try shortening your stride and landing more mid-foot rather than heel striking.

Yeah, the first thing I did after my initial pain in my feet is I went online and bought a new pair of running shoes. I thought my feet were telling me its time for a new pair. I usually run on wooded trails, but move to a lit track when time changes. I feel much better today after doing some stretching last night. Im gonna stay off it for 2-3 weeks. Im not swollen anywhere which is great. Also bought a night splint yesterday online. |
Re: The runners thread
Just got back from Disney World. I decided to try the Goofy Challenge which is running the half-marathon on Saturday and then the whole marathon on Sunday. I had a great time overall but the last 5 miles on Sunday were absolute torture. I missed a lot of weeks of training dealing with tendonitis in my ankle and then tore a calf muscle in late November which put me out for 4 weeks. I only got in 2 long runs of 16 and 17 miles before the race.
Anyway, if anyone is looking to run a marathon then Disney World is a great one to try. They take good care of you (20 aid stations along the way) and, if you have kids, then it makes for a cool winter trip where the crowds aren't so crazy. |

My wife, the runner of the family, loves RunKeeper. She uses it on her Samsung Galaxy Player and it works just fine. It uses Google Maps to DL the map/route while she's on wifi in the house and works flawlessly while "offline" outside. |

Re: The runners thread
Hamstring injury. Bout a month ago I feel like aching in my left hamstring, like in the middle of my leg. Didnt really feel like a sharp pull, but a achy pain. I can feel it when i walk sometimes and when I was running it feel it obviously and its weird. Not a sharp pain, but numbing ach and literally makes my leg go weak where i slow down for a second and then speed back up pushing through. I usually run 3 miles within 30 minutes several times a week. I've taking 2 weeks off to rest it, started last night and its still there.
Any suggestions? I do stretch, not great, but something for several minutes. What are the best stretches, and treatments? Lotta crap on the web, but nothing i saw great for running. Any help would be appreciated. |
Re: The runners thread
Not a runner here, never really have been... but thought I'd pick it up cause I'm just dying in my weekly pickup basketball game. I mean, I'm not even playing defense anymore and thats just bush.
I'm trying to run at least one mile every day for sixty days. I'll run a little more on nicer days, and would ideally like to train for a half marathon, thought it would be a good way to build my endurance up a bit. Any suggestions on running gear? Is their any particular shoes worth getting over others (i've seen those foot shoes or whatever)? Thanks in advance. |
Re: The runners thread
Getting the right shoes is important. Different shoes are designed for different physiologies. Go to a runners shop and have them watch you run so they can fit you properly with a matching shoe.
Also after a few weeks you'll find a mile feels pretty lame. If you're thinking about running a half or full marathon you need to start working on what is called a "base". Meaning putting in miles to help your body and mind prepare to go longer distances. You could work your way up to 2.5-3 miles in a month with dedication and get to 5 in 10 weeks. Then you could really start light training for a marathon or half. Finally...don't run every day. It might be ok in the beginning but your body needs recovery time. Every other day would be better. On off days do some type of cross training or jog/walk to get stretched out and raise your heartbeat. |
Re: The runners thread
There are some good running apps out there to help you train and stay on track. As for shoes I agree, hit up a running shop and get fitted by the pros. Having the right shoes makes all the difference.
