Re: 1991 Redskins 20th Anniversary
You know, I was watching Super Bowl 22 today, and realized that in today's NFL, the Redskins would have gotten called many times for roughing the passer, as well as a few personal foul calls on a defenseless receiver. I also saw a pass from Rypien to Byner that would have been called incomplete. Couple that with the non-call on the pass interference toward the end of the first half, and that game would have been A LOT closer than what it was.
My apologies if this was brought up earlier in the thread, but it kind of makes me chuckle a bit by how strict the officials call games now - at least on the Redskins. You can definitely tell a HUGE difference in how much the officials are trying to protect the players nowadays.
The Pats played this way for years. Not only against Indy but they did the same thing to the Rams in the 01 Super Bowl. Wr's should have fear when they catch the ball, not given a chance to catch the ball and run before being hit. That's just not football. That game plan against Buffalo was pure perfection. Brad Edwards could've easily been the MVP. But you're correct, there would've been a ton of 15 yarders and then fines. This crap that's played today is just garbage. I still watch but it's just not the same. |

As long as he does that then it shouldn't matter what happens to the wr. Edwards has just as much right to the ball as the wr. Incidental contact. This is how it should be played. The refs and the league today are soft as butter and would never let any of this rough play go on. |

Agree in full, it surprises me as such an emotional game that football is that we haven't seen a real nasty incident from the defensive side of the ball in regards to an offensive friendly call. |
It's a different game in many ways, and not just when the Redskins play.
Certainly a faster game today, but not necessarily a better game than in 1991.:twocents: |

Man I fee old.
OMG! You are a mere child. Old is actually remembering and seeing games in old Griffith Stadium. Old is being excited in 1960 when I actually met Eddie LeBaron and then being upset when I found out he was going to play for the newly minted Dallas Cowboys. That was the biggest test of my Redskin loyalty, ever, but somehow I and it survived LeBaron's move. |

It's funny/strange how and why we remember certain seasons. Most of the 1991 season is a complete blur to me. My father passed away on Sept 14th of that year, and whatever I saw of that season was in full shock mode. He was only 64 at his death, so it was a sudden and shocking event for my family. Then on Super Bowl Sunday, my wife drew the short straw on her job and had to work. I always picked her up at work on the days she was alone and had to close. I left the house during halftime and missed most of the 3rd quarter, so even that game is somewhat hazy in my memory. 1991 was a forgettable season for me; I prefer to recall seasons when things went a little better for me and the family. I guess it does show how the Redskins become part of your life in good times and bad. Ultimately, I had some health problems of my own in early 2004. I vividly remember a very good friend coming to visit me in the hospital and leaning over my bed and saying, "Gibbs is coming back!" I am sure that accelerated my recovery! Good and bad, thick and thin, more thin than thick lately, but always "Hail to the Redskins!" |

Im guessing your heart was in good shape cause im sure most of us almost had a heart attack hearing Gibbs was coming back. It came straight out of left field for me I had given up hope of that ever happening. I had a Cowboy fan come in my office and tell me, i called him a flat out liar. lol |
