Re: Report: Fred Davis, Trent Williams suspended four games
Listening to ESPN980 right now- Chris Russell reporting that the NFL wanted to suspend them both for an entire season, but a settlement was reached with skins/NFLPA that got them only four games. Grey area due to the lockout/grace period.
Lots of conflicting reports about the timing of their 3rd violations. |
Re: Report: Fred Davis, Trent Williams suspended four games
Ok so this is Davis's 3rd drug test failure. I'm presuming thats over his whole time in the NFL and not him taking 3 tests over the summer and failing all 3.
But I have not heard that TW has had 2 previous drug failures in the NFL so why is it they both get the same punishment? One would think that if it's the typical punishment for a failure to get a 4 game suspension then shouldn't Davis's be more strict? or are they both at #3? Whats pretty bad is they get out of college and get a job, a job that pays them really good, a job that many of us could only wish we could get, and knowing the rules decide to ignore them and use a banned substance. Now they are gunna be faces with losing money for each game they didn't play in.... do you all think it will stop them or will they take it in stride and use again? I always find it funny how people will be on probation, have jail time hanging over their heads, and they know they can't break the law or can't do something specific or they will have to do the 40+ years and they do it anyway. Why? and if you decide to do it don't boo hoo later about your jail time. You knew what would happen and you didn't care then. |

Wonderful. |
Re: Report: Fred Davis, Trent Williams suspended four games
At least they get to serve their suspensions during the last quarter of a lost season. But, Fred Davis is in a contract year and is one of our few playmakers. Big decision as to what we do with him.
As for Trent- so disappointing. This is the #4 overall pick, and in a little over a year with the team he's failed 3 drug tests. This is pretty disastrous. I hope they both get their heads screwed on right. |

Agreed...I would hope this would wake him up but the first two failed drug tests didn't. Unbelievable, really. Dude lost a ****load of money over some weed. |

But it'll be really interesting come this offseason when they're negotiating with Davis and with Landry (who, and I don't like to speculate, but I'm pretty confident in this info, is one strike away from 3) |
Is this a rhetorical question? I don't really know how to answer you
It's not an intentionally rhetorical question. Really, it just seems like the Redskins are struggling to manage their younger players compared to other teams. But I also know how that can be a perception that isn't reality.
Is every team facing the same challenges the Redskins are w/failed drug tests? My assumption is that they are. |

As long as they don't start testing the fans. Watching this team sober is unbearable. :cool-smil

Re: Report: Fred Davis, Trent Williams suspended four games
Trent was drafted too high (pun) thus makes too much money for this type of a letdown. Davis too, to a lesser degree. I'm dissapointed with them. They can't be depended on.

Huh? I'm not really a fan of Goodell, but I certainly don't fault the man for suspending a guy after 3 failed drug tests. As a matter of fact, I'm sure the language for these sort of suspensions is in the new CBA, which the NFLPA agreed to. |

This could be (and probably will be) real trouble. Undoubtedly, it will not be the last time. If possible, I would love to find a decent partner and trade both their asses. If they allowed this to happen, I really hate to count on them in the future......

If anything, you should be kissing his ass. They technically should have been suspended a year for their third infraction. 1st fail = never made public 2nd fail = made public and 4 game suspension 3rd fail = made public and 1 year suspension These morons got 2 freebies. |
Re: Report: Fred Davis, Trent Williams suspended four games
The fact Trent and Fred risked one year suspensions is of real concern. Hard to put much confidence in either guy at this point.
Nonetheless I do think this reflects the lack of leadership at the top of the pyramid. |
Re: Report: Fred Davis, Trent Williams suspended four games
Did Dexter Manley, Tony Peters, and more reflect poor leadership on the part of Gibbs?
Did Lawrence Taylor and Quincy Carter reflect poor leadership on the part of Parcells? Did Santonio Holmes reflect poor leadership on the part of Tomlin? These guys have to be held accountable for their own actions, I don't see how any one but Davis and Williams are responsible. |

I agree with Smoot, you can't pin this on leadership (owner, GM, or Head Coach). This squarely comes down to a person doing the right thing instead of putting their career in jeopardy. You have some idiot fans on other forums suggesting the Redskins hire a professional baby sitter to follow these guys around making sure they stay on the up and up. Really? How'd that work out for Dallas and Pacman? If you need to have a babysitter to follow a player around, you don't need him on your team and probably shouldn't be trusted to play in games either. |

These players, especially in the case of Fred and Trent, are just kids and I think we (older folks) tend to forget that. More importantly, no franchise is locked in to drafting any particular player, so I think when a franchise chooses a particular player they acknowledge past history etc. For example: Trent's problematic history was well known if memory serves as opposed to the other top LT Okung. |

Yet I disagree with you about LT,I beleive Parcells knew of LT's problems ..if not him others did.The ownership did not.Look I'm a real old time fan to the point of pissing off all the newbies that think LT is a running back for the Jets. After his las inccident I called the Giants officies and said he should be removed from the Giants"ring of Fame"....I also blame ..us the fans ....we want our teams to win at any price and when they get caught doing something wrong,we act holyer then though.I want the Giants to win but I want it done right ...to me if it means we don't make the playoffs ok then we need better people finding the better people.Yes I'm part of the problem. |

As one of Fred and Trent's generation, I may only speak for myself but I know I wouldn't be doing jack shit today if I had the personal accountability of those two. Unless they are the biggest idiots this side of the Mississippi, they had to know positive drug tests lead to suspensions. The fact that they kept doing it after the 2nd positive test indicates they really didn't give a shit. How hard is it to understand? Don't do drugs, and the odds are good that you can keep making serious bank at this point in your young career. Is a dimebag worth more than a contract of millions? |
Re: Report: Fred Davis, Trent Williams suspended four games
I agree with you on personal responsibility. Maybe I should have said it like this: along with a lot of uninspired performances, suspect game/clock management and a string of bad decisions at QB I wonder if this drug issue might (also) reflect leadership issues.

Young or old makes no difference other then to say they are immature. Many a people join the military while young and most don't smoke weed. The ones that do get kicked out. Simple. Your either mature enough to know what not to do in order to keep you lively hood or you don't. Besides there are plenty of other "legal" ways to escape reality.....ie; beer, wine, liquor. There's no need to jeapordize your monitary income. Unless you really don't care about earning a nice living as they are. |

I actually think for TW it might be something to consider because of all the $ they have sunk into him and LTs are tough to get. Not for Davis though. TEs are a dime a dozen and he's easily replaceable. |
Re: Report: Fred Davis, Trent Williams suspended four games
You guys know what's scary? There are much harder recreational drugs out there that leave your system much faster than weed. I know people in the military that absolutely stay away from weed because of the random pop tests, but will roll (E) their asses off on a Saturday night. You don't think NFL players know that yay leaves their system in a day or two?
But fans only care when the punishments affect their team. Nobody really gives a hoot if one our of players are going Tony Montana one evening... because chances are, we're never going to find out. |
