I like how we "never hesitate to spend big in free agency," despite the fact that we've been relatively tame over the last couple of years.

Is every team leaking info left and right like the Skins? Seems like there's a new rumor every other day.
I like how we "never hesitate to spend big in free agency," despite the fact that we've been relatively tame over the last couple of years.
We spent as much as any team did last year. It just didn't seem like it because we cleared out a ton of contracts first, and so we weren't spending budget that would have to come from future years.

Responsible spending still lines the pockets of free agents.

We spent what we did because we signed several guys to reasonable deals. We weren't in the big money Nnamdi stakes or anything like that. The quote that I responded to implied that we were still doing Haynesworth-type deals.

And the year before we didn't do much at all in FA.

Im okay with getting VJax. The best thing we can do for a new Qb is bring in a WR who will make plays.

And the year before we didn't do much at all in FA.
Reasonable is relative though. When I saw the numbers on the Haynesworth deal, I thought that it was a pretty well structured contract. One year later it looked awful.

Bowen, Cofield, Chester, Brown, and Atogwe all signed pretty huge deals that gave them eight figure practical guarantees. I think that if you look at the contractual details, you can see a definite difference in the way the Redskins write contracts now versus how they did it before. But from 10,000 feet above, it looks like a franchise that loves to give out big free agent contracts giving out free agent contracts to players at the peak of their value, aka buying high.

I think that it's a lot to ask of the national writers to be detail oriented enough to realize that these big contracts are ones the Redskins can get away from a bit easier than the prior contracts which required constant restructuring. Their claims that the Shanahan/Allen duo likes to give out large free agent deals are justified by those large free agent deals.

If those contracts had led to wins in 2011, I think they'd be singing a different tune. Perhaps not, though.

what do you guys think of Garcon? i dont think he is a number one receiver, that being said i would sign him but not to number 1 money which he is looking for i think. That being said who else is really going to hit the market? i think everyone worth interest is going to get tagged other than vincent jackson and possibly stevie johnson

I see him as the third name in this Wonderlic question.

1. Please complete the pattern. Alvin Harper, Peerless Price, ________.

So do we pay top dollar for VJax or give a mid level contract to Garcon?

VJax is a beast, but he's 29 and has some baggage, and I don't like Garçon at all. Fool's gold. Similar stats as Gaffney for similar reasons. Played on a bad team with a bad QB who had to throw all the time because they were always behind. Stats are gonna pile up for somebody. Plus, his first name is Pierre;)

Re: FA WR in Vjax and RW

I'm wary on getting V-Jax and Colston. Both will want long term deals, yet they are both 29 years old. How much left do they have in the tank?
Also I think that V-Jax's numbers are inflated a bit higher than they should be. He has a tendency to torch terrible pass defenses (313 yds 5tds combined against NE and GB) but then lay an egg in many other games.
Colston I love, but am worried about his lack of starts. He started 7 games last year despite being clearly the best reciever on his team (besides Grahm). Is this an indication of character issues where the coach benches doesn't start him? Probably nothing, but still makes me nervous considering we'd have to pay him top dollar.
Garcon I like alot. He is who I would go for if I were the GM. He is young, runs his routes well, runs after the catch, and won't be paid top dollar. I'd be comfortable with our skill players being Griffin, Garcon, Moss, Hankerson, Davis, Helu, Royster (who quietly dominated this year when given his opportunity...just look at his two starts), Gaffney, and Young as our pass catching FB (also I think Hightower will be back). I doubt Shanny will go to Garcon though. He seems set on a big name guy. His hard push to pay top dollar for that joke Santonio tells me so.

I'm wary of all three, V-Jax, Colston, and Garcon. Garcon is injured too much, so is Colston, and V-Jax is almost 30 and has issues with alcohol and getting suspended.

Ah maybe your right about Garcon, maybe I got excited because he started 16 games last year. Colston is only 5 months younger than V-Jax.

Im really starting to belive Stevie Johnson may be our best bet as a FA WR considering talent level and age and as well that guys like Bowe will be franchised. I know he has had some problems with drops but He has shown signs of true talent and being a #1 and the best part about him is his age, he has the chance to improve as well.

I also hate to say it but im starting to think Desean would be a good pickup as well. We have zero players that when they get the ball in open field the defense says "oh shit" Desean definitely has that about him. The big thing with him though is he is a bit of a headcase, i doubt MS would even consider but if we could keep him in check i would do it, just something to think about.

Unfortunately, I think he might go to another AFC East team. But yeah, I'd take SJ in a heartbeat.

The two things I hate about Stevie Johnson (besides his name being stevie)

- he's dropped the ball in huge situations more than once (see steelers game, jets game)

- he celebrates TD's like its his last and gets a penalty every other time.

I hear you on that lol especially the name part BUT he is marginally better than any other receiver we have other than possibly Hank but that is yet to be proven, and he is only 25 where he can mature a bit and also improve his game and the only other #1 i see being available is Vincent Jackson and he is on the older side already.

I personally don't think this is a big deal. Also, our team needs to figure out a way to deal with these type of players. You're not going to get 52 angels in the team, there needs to be leadership in the locker room and the coaching staff.

True on your last sentence, but still, when you celebrate its a 15 yard penalty. You're now kicking from the 20 yard line. It definitely makes a difference in a game depending on who the team is.

i agree with you. i think celebrations are more closely related to the lack of strong leadership within the organization. it wouldnt be a problem here. that aside, id take johnsons touchdowns with the accompanying celebrations and penalties vs. our receivers with nothing to celebrate in the 1st place.

I swear, I NEVER hear sports analyst mention this fact. Was watching PTI, and Wilborn (who Im a fan of) was talking about how if we get RGIII we will "ruin him like this franchise has ruined players for the the last 15+ years".

Like WTF, can you at least mention that this is a different FO then the past? If you are going to sh-t on our FO, at least pinpoint current members of it, instead of talking like Vinny C. is still running things......

I swear to GOD I hope we draft RGIII and he ends up being a super BEAST and SHITS on the league and gets us many Superbowls, mainly so I can watch these sports analyst and Redskin haters be forced to slurp us off....

Re: FA WR in Vjax and RW

If I could pick my two WRs from this FA group, I'd take Steve Johnson & Mike Wallace (it's being reported that Shitzburgh will not franchise tag him). My 1st option between the two would Mike Wallace.

If the prices wasnt extremely high, I'd put them (or one of the two) with Hankerson.
