Re: How will our defense hold up next year?
regarding hall, at this point, i think its more likely they restructure his deal than release him. he's heads and shoulders above anything else on the market now. He's not a BAD corner. He's an average, starting caliber corner with big play potential. He's worth keeping, just not at his current cap figure. I'd be all about keeping him and extending/restructuring his deal to lower his cap hit.
Then again, every corner on the market this year got vastly overpaid (in my opinion), so maybe hall is getting paid fair market value. |

I always thought he could be a great corner. Since college he's drawn the title overated, and I always thought it was his lack of focus & attention to the details. He wants to make the 1 big play more than many small plays that matter. He wouldn't be a good FS cause he wants to gamble all the time, but is there a nicke/dime package where he could be like a 3rd safety in the middle of the field? Blache used to have the "Cobra" w/3 safeties. Don't know if that's what I'm thinking, I just see Hall being best used to roam towards the ball, not cover per se. |
Re: How will our defense hold up next year?
if we have an offense that can actually score points, we can afford to have a more aggressive, gambling defense.

Re: How will our defense hold up next year?
I think what we have to hope for is that this team plays greater than the sum of it's parts. There will be some stars recognized as a result of solid play and above all, 10+ wins. Drafting one of the top QBs in this year's draft is probably the biggest addition to this defense. It's cliche, I know.

Cliche but true. Griffin should make everyone else on the roster look better. |

RGIII certainly is confident. |

Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
Yes , they did . While I happen to like much of what the F/O has done , I feel more confident that a team built around O-Line and Defense will put us in the hunt more often ( say over ten yrs w/ RG111 ) . But , if we win a SB or two with teams like NO or Indy ......... I'm on board with that too ! |

Middle of the pack? |
Re: How will our defense hold up next year?
I say BS. We can be a top 10 defense, no doubt.
|
Re: How will our defense hold up next year?
Yardage or scoring Matty?
I think we get better almost exclusively because D. Hall is moved inside. I think he's going to have a pro-bowl year closer to the ball. |

Middle of the pack?
Hmmm...I still think we're a top 10 defense. I 100% agree with the top 4 defenses (Pitt, Baltimore, Houston, San Fran). San Fran to me was not just the best defense, but the best defense I've seen since the '00 Baltimore Ravens defense. They only allowed 1--thats right--1 rushing TD all year. Houston, we'll you got to give them mad props for turning around a 30th ranked defense into a top 5 defense. It goes to show that A) it can be done--taking a bad 4-3 defense and turning them into a 3-4 defense that is near the top the next year. Just like how when shanahan took over we had a top 10, 4-3 defense, and then we suffered badly the next year falling to 31st with our new 3-4 defense. Last year our defense started off as a top 10 defense, but then we fell midway through the season to 13th. This season, if our defense remains intact and for the most part healthy, I will will declare our defense a failure if it isn't in the top ten this year. Middle of the pack isn't a bad ranking by nfl.com, but its not that good of a ranking either considering fhere I expect us to be and where we should be. |
Re: How will our defense hold up next year?
I could see us around 10th, but middle of the pack is fair todya based on last year and the concerns in the secondary. The front seven is probaby top 10 right now...right?
|
Re: How will our defense hold up next year?
If I said I hope we are 30th in total yards, would I get in trouble?
(of course I mean it in a NE/GB kinda way, where opponents have to move up and down the field in order to keep up with our massive scoring machine) |
Re: How will our defense hold up next year?
We should be stout. Give 3 alotta opportunities.
|
Re: How will our defense hold up next year?
Measure our defense by how good they played last year. They ended up ranked 13th in the league. By week fifteen prior to the second game against the Giants, the Redskins were ranked 10th in overall defense in the NFL. With the addition of Jarvis Jenkins crashing into offensive lines, the defense could be top 5 this season. My biggest concern is the play at safety. If Cedric Griffin, Madieu Williams, Tanard Jackson, and Meriweather can play within the scheme, the defense will be great.
|
Re: How will our defense hold up next year?
I'm expecting anything from 7-15.. But I'm genuinely concerned that Meriweather and Madieu Williams will be our starting safeties. These two players were absolutely abysmal last year, why should we expect anything different? The only reason I'm still optimistic is that our coach has no problem benching guys.

I am excited about Jenkins but I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't flash until end of this season or even next preseason because I have always heard his type injury just takes that long till a player is really back up to speed |
Re: How will our defense hold up next year?
I expect our defense to be a top 10 defense next year. Although I have some concern about our safety play going into this season, I don't think the secondary will be as bad as some are anticipating. I think the front 7 will be improved (more experienced and added depth), coach Morris' presence will help with secondary scheme, and most of all our offense being able to stay on the field longer will increase defensive stamina.
|
Re: How will our defense hold up next year?
I definitely think that we should draft a safety in the first round next year.
wait a second. Nevermind, I meant the year after that. oh, wait, I meant the year after that. They are saying that the 2015 Safety draft class is shaping up to be a once in a generation draft class at that position. |
Re: How will our defense hold up next year?
Weak coverage secondary with a strong front 7...seems to me we'll give up middle of the pack yards, and be stout in the redzone. We'll probably also be at the back end of the league in terms of over 20 yard completions/scores. Top 10 in sacks.

Re: How will our defense hold up next year?
I don't see much on the pipeline on defense. Jenkins and Riely and that's about it. Barnes and Westbrook aren't any good at covering. I may get flamed for this but I'd try and trade Orakpo. He's simply not an elite player. I'd put Rob Jackson in there cause he seems to be every bit as effective coming off the edge as Orakpo. See what you can get for Rak to maybe get back some draft picks and draft Fletcher's replacement....or perhaps get a corner.
Interesting.
Not going to popular in the very least but interesting. I get wanting to trade Orakpo but the reason would be because Rob Jackson can play not because Orkapo can't. |
Re: How will our defense hold up next year?
Weren't there rumors floating earlier this year Orakpo was on the trading block?

Yup. The rumor was that he was floated in the Gryphon trade. |

Ahhh that's right. I don't think anyone here should be "scared" to suggest anything really, but certainly not something the FO evidently considered already. That said I hate the idea of giving up on Orakpo...still hoping he can achieve elite status. |

Though if Griffin is the next great QB it will have been worth it, IMO. On another note, I'm shocked that Orakpo was part of the trade discussion. I think Rak's actually an underrated part of our D. Lotus or anybody, what might the Griffin trade have been if Rak was involved? Lotus or anybody, as the original deal was the Rams 2012 1st in exchange for our 2012 1st, our 2012 2nd, 2013 1st, and 2014 1st. Would this trade have been better for us instead? The Rams 2012 1st in exchange for our 2012 1st, our 2012 2nd, and Rak? (edited after SS graciously dropped some info) |
Re: How will our defense hold up next year?
One rumor had a third team involved. But the bigger was we were trying to hold on to our 2012 2nd rounder, and offer Rak instead. Rams said no

HailGreen, I don't want to be rude and not answer your questions but I defer to the all-knowing SS above.

I think Rak's actually an underrated part of our D.
Although I am not shocked that they considered trading Orakpo in order to get Griffin, I am glad that the Rams rejected. I agree with you that Orakpo is underrated by some. I think people make a mistake by comparing Orakpo to the highest standard and say "see there! he falls short, why can't he do that like [your favorite OLB/DE] does". It is Ok to say that he is not as effective as Demarcus Ware (for example) but it is a mistake to think that because he falls short of elite status that he does not have value in our defense. I think the pressure that he brings creates opportunities for the rest of the front to also bring pressure which indirectly helps our secondary due to rushed/anxious QB's. I think the whole D benefits. Sure he can get better in pass coverage and add a move or two to his pass rushing arsenal but he is still a BEAST as he is now. He may not be "elite" yet or the "best" yet but he is still pretty hard to block (legally). Obviously, the only logical reason to trade Orakpo is if it makes our team better. I would have done it to get Griffin (if it was necessary). I would also consider it if he becomes a glaring liability in pass coverage. For now, I think his strengths far out weigh his weaknesses and I expect the DE converted OLB to improve this year just like he did last year from the previous year. |
Re: How will our defense hold up next year?
I mean I don't think they offered him because they didn't like him, but because he has value and that's the kind of guy you have to offer in such a big deal

You have to do whatever it takes to get Griffin here. I understand that. I would have offered him too. But I am glad that the Rams rejected because I think Orakpo is an integral part of this defense and IMO he is more valuable than a 2nd round pick. |
Re: How will our defense hold up next year?
Unless that second rounder was a RT;) to some. Me I am glad Rak is still here.
|
Re: How will our defense hold up next year?
Rak was held on the first play against the Bills. Kerrigan still got the sack but the hold was glaring. Rak gets held way too often and not called.
|
Re: How will our defense hold up next year?
^^^ get used to that with replacement refs.
|
Re: How will our defense hold up next year?
Part of me wants to think the holds not called on Orakpo so far in his career couldn't be any worse...
