I think everyone likes the idea of getting a first round talent (and at a position of need) in the 6th or 7th round. |

We aren't going to get him. And for those that like Donald Stephenson, he isn't going as high as the 3rd round. |
Re: Who Will The Redskins Draft (Post Your Mock Draft Here)
I think that most of the mock drafts in this thread are very similar - and good - in terms of addressing the Redskins' needs. To me, there are only two issues in terms of needs versus availability.
First, it seems to me to be very likely that, if the Skins intend to acquire a RT in the draft, they will need to draft one in the 3rd Round or, if there is no run on OT's, the 4th Round at the very latest. The fact that we're looking for someone to fit in a zone blocking scheme should help us a little in terms of availability. So, right now, I'm expecting the 3rd Round pick to be an OT. The Skins clearly want a RB in this draft. They want a RB who is a good receiver and who can make people miss. To get one of the players they would want for this role, they are probably going to have to use one of their 4th Round picks for this purpose. Staring with their other 4th Round pick, I think that the Skins could go with the BPA, perhaps leaning toward OL, CB, and S. |
So if we go Turbin, do you think Helu starts with Turbin spelling him or vice-versa?
Good question, it would be a good battle in camp. Helu might have the early leg up over a rookie though. |
Re: Who Will The Redskins Draft (Post Your Mock Draft Here)
I might be the only one here who doesn't want Vontaze Burfict. He reminds me of Maurice Clarett in a way, in the sense that he created his own downfall, and whoever ends up wasting a draft pick on him (maybe a team like NE) will get praise heaped upon them, at least until he ends up being a bust.
I remember when Shanny drafted Clarett even though analysts didn't approve of the 3rd rounder he used, everybody generally agreed it was a good move because Shanny gets the best out of his running backs. One year out of the league later and Clarett was getting arrested for pulling an OJ, getting into a high speed chase while he was drinking and had automatic rifles in his car. I feel like we'll see a similar end to Burfict's career, maybe not the end Clarett had but I get the feeling once Burfict doesn't do anything he'll just become another malcontent who blames everything on his coaches. |

Helu is the change of pace playmaker/RB to be Named backs up Helu
Royster ultimately emerges as the starter? You're kidding, right? Royster is a plodder. If you want three yards and a cloud of dust, then go with Royster because there will be no breakaway runs. Just say no to Royster. We need a better starter than that. |

Among the current backs on the roster, and I'm including Hightower, no I'm not kidding. Have said it since last summer, the Shanahans love...LOVE Royster. |

I like Royster. You are correct that he is not a breakaway back in any sense. But he and Helu together give us a nice smash and dash. |

Re: Who Will The Redskins Draft (Post Your Mock Draft Here)
What exactly is limited about this draft?
Limited because we don't have a full compliment of picks. Its for a good reason though.
The Skins clearly want a RB in this draft. They want a RB who is a good receiver and who can make people miss. To get one of the players they would want for this role, they are probably going to have to use one of their 4th Round picks for this purpose.
Mike Shanahan and Bobby Turner usually draft at least 1 RB every draft. So yeah, they clearly want a RB in this draft because they always want to draft RB.
Hightower starts, Royster backs him up (possibly ultimately starting) Helu is the change of pace playmaker/RB to be Named backs up Helu
I think it will be a true open competition and they'll play musical chairs RBs til 1 back clearly separates himself. I think Helu and Royster made big strides last year and have surpassed Hightower in ability to make the right cutback decision. I think its will be Helu/Royster/Hightower RBBC with Helu getting 3rd down stuff. |
Re: Who Will The Redskins Draft (Post Your Mock Draft Here)
All we're missing is a 2nd rounder this year. But we still have 7 picks overall.
We still have 7 picks. There are 7 rounds ergo 7picks = full compliment of picks.
Right, but having 7 picks overall is not the same as having a full compliment of picks 1 for each round. We're missing the 2nd most valueable pick for team building therefore there are limited resources. 2nd round pick are core foundational picks that are expecting to contribute fairly quickly. |
Re: Who Will The Redskins Draft (Post Your Mock Draft Here)
Calling the draft limited because of one pick seems like a bit of a stretch IMO.

The value of a 2nd round pick is greater then the value of all the picks from 4-7. |

I'm not underselling the importance of the 2nd rounder at all, I've love to have it, but I'd rather have RG3. Don't forget we have a 3rd rounder too, you left that out in your last point. |

If you think a draft without a 2nd round pick isn't limited that's fine I'm not trying to convince you. I'm just answering the question you asked me. And like I said before we're limited for a good reason and Griffin is that reason.
Limited because we don't have a full compliment of picks. Re: Who Will The Redskins Draft (Post Your Mock Draft Here)
Was listening to NFLN on Sirius and they were talking about 1st rd draft picks good, bad, & ?. Do the work for yourself look at the past drafts from 2008 till 2011. It's about 50/50. We are at about 75% for our last picks. 2008 traded back into the 2nd rd. 2009 Orakpo, 2010 TW, & 2011 Kerrigan. My point being you need a good scout team and I think we have a good one.

Re: Who Will The Redskins Draft (Post Your Mock Draft Here)
Was watching NFLN and steve wyche was reporting from redskins camp talking about what we plan to do with our picks.
He said expect us to go after OL with our 3rd and 4th rounders as well as a TE. He also said that should Vontaze be there in the later rounds, expect him to be an option for us a depth at MLB. Yes, I know another Vontaze mentioning with us, but this time by someone other than a warpath member. And that was the only prospect other than RG3 that was specifically named by him whom we'd target...more to come. 2 more days in a few hours is draft time. |

Great at making cuts, can catch the ball, and much like Portis ducks the shoulder near the sideline to make an extra couple yards. Also ran some spread in college so if, and a big if, the shannys are smart enough to use alittle of it between having rg3 and him, they could probably average a few yard off of it with some potential big plays. |

Phillip Thomas Safety, Syracuse 6.) Vontaze Burfict Linebacker, Arizona State 7.) Cliff Harris Cornerback, Oregon I would be satisfied with this. |

He finds a hole then plows through it, he has great straight line speed. Rarely does he change direction once he plants. They want someone who change direction on a dime and is shifty as a runner. |
