Re: Jabar Gaffney Told to Seek A Trade

I don't recall when the skins got the better end of a trade deal involving picks. Last season I thought Hightower was a steal but he was on IR after 5 games and to resign him is questionable with his health. J.Campbell-we got shafted of his value.
This team always buys high and sells low.
Gaffney would be a welcomed addition to a team lacking depth like The Jags, even the Ravens need help. Skins gave a 3rd to get Gaff and talks for a 6th or 7th rounder is just
unfair.

skins wasted a 3rd on jarmon and did a good job making up for it by trading him for gaffney. anything for gaffney is a win
Well, I still don't get how Mike Shanahan wants to get Gaffney out of Washington. The guy is a veteran wide receiver who happened to be the most productive wide receiver on the roster last season. Jabar Gaffney showed up for every game. With the additions of Garcon and Morgan, and with Hankerson coming back I still see plenty of room for Gaffney as a member of the Redskins receiving corps. The problem in my estimation is Shanahan. He micro manages too damn much.
Gaffney is the definition of just-a-guy. The fact that he put up the numbers that he did last year was a testament to how pathetic our offense was, not Gaffney's prowess.

We need playmakers at WR and Gaffney is not a playmaker.

Again the injuries to Moss and Cooley forced Gaffney to be outr top WR not to mention we had no one else. Garcon, Morgan, Moss, Hankerson, Davis, Cooley. Where is the "plenty of room" for a below average WR who doesn't have separation speed?

Problem is Garcon fits the same description...almost exactly. He's had some solid seasons working w/ arguably the best QB in the history of football and then last season because he was the primary target. But through it all Garcon has been inconsistent, which is the consensus on him as best I can tell.

...so Garcon is younger than Gaffney but doesn't know the system. Maybe it's a wash, but then you have to take the cap implications into account.

Garcon has two key factors on his side over Gaffney. Speed and youth.

Jabar Gaffney, WR for the Washington Redskins at NFL.com

Links to career stats. Garcon is about as pedestrian as they come, and his fumbles are a red flag. In short, it's almost impossible to rationally justify blowing a huge portion of cap space on this "profile" of a player. I think the FO has (needlessly) backed itself into a corner here, putting all it's proverbial eggs into the Garcon basket.

I hope he is that guy for us...1000+ yards and at least 8 TDs. He needs to be that guy because the opportunity cost of his contract is significant. If he's not we need to start asking some hard questions about this FO's legitimacy.

With Niles Paul moving to TE and Leonard Hankerson still unproven, I fail to see how Gaffney is expendable.

You don't just dump a proven reliable player for a "potential playmaker" that's may or may not be on your current roster. The only answer is they're eyeing a handful of WR in the draft.

Ruhskins 04-23-2012 01:52 PM

Re: Jabar Gaffney Told to Seek A Trade

The team went with youth at other positions, I don't have a problem with doing the same with our wideouts. If you want a safety net, Santana Moss can do that. I don't see how losing Gaffney is so terrible.

Gaffney probably doesn't have a spot on this team. It's as simple as that. He's as valuable now as he will probably ever be in his career. Sell.

Given that Shanahan told him not to show up for team workouts last week, that kinda says all you need to know.

It doesn't matter how bad the offense was or how pathetic Grossman and Beck played last year. It doesn't matter why Gaffney produced. The fact of the matter is that he produced. He was a 16 game starter and the Redskins leading receiver. Sure, he's not as fast as most wide receivers around the league, and he doesn't have great hands like Leonard Hankerson or Marcus Colston, but Gaffney still stepped up last year. He should be credited for doing that. But he's being treated like an outcast now. That's wrong.

How is he being treated like an outcast? If he was told to seek a trade, then that gives him the chance to go to another team of his choosing with the same contract he has right now. If he gets cut, then his production last year should allow him to find another home (such as New England). The worst thing for Gaffney would be to keep him here buried in the depth chart.

@ Ruhskins- You don't think Gaffney can contribute to the offense? With Garcon, Hankerson, Moss, and Morgan pass receiving, Gaffney wouldn't be an option in certain situations? The only thing Anthony Armstrong has is speed, but as we've seen, he drops passes when he's hit too hard because he's soft. Gaffney is a much better WR than Armstrong. But if Mike Shanahan feels that trading Gaffney plays in the Redskins favor, then so be it.

I think he could contribute, but the problem is that team has invested money and picks in the likes of Garcon (money), Hankerson (pick), and Morgan (money). If you have made those investment, a player like Gaffney becomes a possible trade asset, without having to open up a hole in your roster. Also, a guy like Armstrong (who is not a lock to stay with the team) will most likely be asked to play special teams...something that I doubt Gaffney would do.

I just don't see how trading Gaffney or curtting him is the end of the world. Personally, I think it is better for Gaffney if he can go to a place like New England, where he can be a starter almost right away, instead of being in a WR competition here in DC.

@Ruhskins- I'm a Jabar Gaffney fan. That's why I want him to remain a Redskin. I've followed him ever since he was a gamer at Florida. I was excited when we obtained him in a trade with Denver. But if Mike Shanahan feels that the team doesn't need Gaffney now, then I hope he knows what he's doing. Garcon, Hankerson, and Morgan had better produce this year.

Regardless of if it was Moss or Gaffney that got let go, I REALLY don't think the team is going to suffer.

Re: Jabar Gaffney Told to Seek A Trade

There's a pretty significant lesson in this Gaffney deal to take away, which is that the Shanahan's feel that getting rid of last year's leading receiver is no big deal because his production was entirely a function of the offensive system.

To an extent, I think they're right: I didn't love the Jabar Gaffney acquisition, though I felt it was a trade they could very easily win (and remember how they couldn't figure out where to put Jeremy Jarmon in the 3-4 even given a season). Gaffney did exactly what was needed of him here last year.

It is hardly shocking given the stopgap nature of the acquisition that the Redskins are willing to give him away after a season, even considering how well he played. But what's shocking here is the utter lack of respect for his contributions. It's pretty jarring when a team moves it's top returning receiver and laughs it off as no big deal. With the Redskins, I'm not sure where they've earned the benefit of the doubt on personnel moves like this one.

With that said, this has nothing to do with his Tweet-fest. He was pretty clearly the odd man out of the rotation, as he got dropped from first to third string by the offensive acquisitions. This was calculated the entire offseason: the anticipation being they could trade him on draft day. I think the Twitter rant was just ill-timed re: his trade value. Gaffney has been on the block all along. Now the Redskins are just willing to take less.

******

This post in short: Gaffney was leading receiver, now odd man out. Reflective of Redskins as an organization. Whether good or bad is entirely dependent on perspective.

MonkFan4Life 04-24-2012 06:46 AM

Re: Jabar Gaffney Told to Seek A Trade

lol you'd think we were trying to replace Jerry Rice or something.

When your leading WR doesn't even hit 1000 yards, is on the wrong side of 30, and doesn't offer much as far as YAC or making big plays, the team would be foolish to not try to upgrade.

If Davis didn't get suspended, he would have definitely led the team in most receiving categories. I wonder what this conversation would look like now if that happened.

Hmmm mmmm.

For the Gaffney trade/cut to prove justifiable Garcon must (significantly) outperform himself up to this point in his career. He must break 1000+ yds, score 8+ TDs and contribute consistently. If he does not we have yet another major personnel gaffe by this FO.
