Re: Kirk Cousins pick 4.7
I've been a long time proponent of adding 2 young QBs so I'm very content we finally have it.
We have exactly what I've wanted. The franchise starter, the veteran back up, the up and coming 3rd stringer. |

Shanahan wants to "grow a QB" or something to that effect? Well I guess now he gets to grow two, much to the medias shigrin. It's alright though. Re: Kirk Cousins pick 4.7
Was waiting on the Kirk Cousins pick poll to weigh in, but for right now, it's a single thumb clearly up.
A lot will depend on how the Shanahan's manage Cousins and Grossman, which is kind of a scary proposition, but we've had first round prospects on this team before and who knows how that we'll work out. What we have now is the first quality backup in a long time. Maybe since the 2005 or 2006 season where Campbell was the QB in waiting. |
Re: Kirk Cousins pick 4.7
The more i think about it, the less i like the pick. One of Cousins qualities all the experts talked about was his leadership abilities. I just think if RG3 struggles this year and next year there will a lot of fans calling for Cousins. RG3 has a lot of pressure already. I guess only time will tell, but if he does struggle in 2012 and 2013 RG3 and the Skins will have a bad divorce IMO.

Given the resources the team used to get RG3, it'd be ridiculously stupid for MS to give up on RG3 should he hit a bump on the road. Speaking generally, I do feel a lot of fans need to realize that RG3 is not necessarily going to take this team to the playoffs right away. |

Re: Kirk Cousins pick 4.7
If RG3 is really struggling 2 years in, we have bigger problems than worrying about who the backup is.
The only way RG3 loses the job is if he plays his way out of it. The presence of Cousins isn't going to determine his fate. |

If (that's IF) Griffin struggles two years in a row, it would be a natural to consider alternatives, regardless of who was on the bench. |

I don't see what's wrong with having 2 solid QBs. This is like when people felt like we had to decide between Davis and Cooley at TE. We've got our Bentley and then we've got our backup Corvette. You're gonna be stylin either way. :pimp: |

Nooo. Thats between Davis and T.Williams. And they probably just bake brownies. |
Re: Kirk Cousins pick 4.7
I like the Cousins pick, nice to have a good backup QB for a franchise QB who does sometimes run. Nice to have a front office who doesn't rely on a Curtis Painter for 10 years.. If we go deep into the playoffs (in 3-5 years), and our QB gets whacked by Polamalu or Ray Lewis-type player -- it would be nice to believe we could still win the game..
Btw, seems like Cousins is a good leader, but immobile - negative 100 yards rushing I believe in his career.. IF RG3 ever goes out, we'd have to completely switch our game plan, etc. Here's my question -- why did Cousins' drop? Past Foles, Osweiler, etc. Sure, maybe he was a "steal", but why did everyone else pass on him three times? |
Re: Kirk Cousins pick 4.7
Not sure I'd say Cousins "dropped". He was projected to go somewhere between rounds 2-4.
He's got decent mobility, keep in mind sacks count against rushing yards in college. |

Shanahan stated he couldn't pass Cousins up and I believe he noticed what happened in Houston last year. I would rather have Cousins sub in for an injurjed RG than Rex |

The Redskins gave up alot for RGIII so to say it would take alot to move from him to your #2 would be putting it mildlyBoth are very good young QB's and both I'm sure feel they can play in the NFL,I just believe that it will only be a matter of time before Cousins feels he can be a starter in the NFL somewhere. |
Re: Kirk Cousins pick 4.7
I am completely shocked by the pick. knowing the other glaring needs. I understand having to "make" the pick because he was there, but honestly you invest all the picks to move up to get RGIII, now seems like you are sending a message that just in case RGIII struggles. which in my mind may cause a little undue pressure or stress on RGIII. I know backups are very important, but i just dont get the pick.

Re: Kirk Cousins pick 4.7
I don't see what the fuss is about really. Yeah I get the argument that a potential starter at other positions could have been taken with that pick. If that's your beef, ok.
But a 4th rounder is no real threat to a guy like RG3 who we just gave up a fortune to get. I think their roles are pretty clear. |
Re: Kirk Cousins pick 4.7
There are alot of people who said we can't find a Franchise QB in the 4th rd, but yet some of those same people are saying RG3 are 1st rd QB needs to be worried about Cousins our 4th rd picked QB. Please make up your minds can you find a Starting QB in the 4th rd or not. MS has made it clear to both QB's.

Thank you NYC and Matty. This talk of Cousins' starting has got to stop. We drafted a clear starter and a backup - period. |

The team has been so heavily criticized (myself included) on having to go into the draft having to find heavy impact players with every draft pick because they were so limited in the past. You clearly see with the Cousin, Keenan Robinson and Straight Outta Compton pick, these are plan B, talented reserves who provide a potential plan B down the line. Isnt it nice to have that luxury? Now we are building talented depth, people are gonna criticize? Anyone at ESPN and sports talk radio can go to hell if they are serious about a quarterback controversy comment. |

Let's not sit here and say that it can't happen. I hope it doesn't but it can happen. So what if Cousins outplays RG3 in camp? Are you saying this isn't a possibility? |

My sincere apologies if this has been posted all ready but Gruden's camp on Cousins is pretty good probably better then RGIII's.

QB CONTROVERSY! Will the Colts still start Luck after taking a qb with the last pick in the entire draft!? Stay tuned! |
Re: Kirk Cousins pick 4.7
the broncos took a QB in the 2nd. no ones talking controversy there. besides griffin, this was our best pick in the draft. some in the media will bash us now, but those same people will be praising our brilliance if/when griffin gets injured and we have a capable backup.
|
Re: Kirk Cousins pick 4.7
It's really not that big of a deal, the more I think about it. We are desperate at the QB spot. We hopefully drafted our starting QB for the next decade and his backup/insurance policy/trade bait.
If RG3 can't handle a bit of competition, better to know that now than several years from now. |
Re: Kirk Cousins pick 4.7
They had Cousins on the Sports Junkies this morning. He sounds very mature and seems to have a good head on his shoulders. I mean, if most boards have him as a 2nd-3rd rounder, you gotta get him.
Comes back to the balance of drafting need vs. rank. |
Re: Kirk Cousins pick 4.7
It was definitely a BPA pick.
For the better part of 20 years we've had QB issues. If you can solve the starter and backup positions in one shot, why the heck not? |
Re: Kirk Cousins pick 4.7
Look guys, this won't be a QB competition or controversy. There's no way on earth, heaven and hell that Cousins will be competing for the starting job or even enough meaningful snaps in practice that it will be a glimmer of a discussion. We drafted our starting QB for the next decade at #2 overall. We drafted his long term backup in the 4th round. It's that clear. Everything else is media pollution.
Best case-Cousins never sees the field and we have a long term backup in place. Next best case-RGIII misses some time and Cousins fills in adequately and a trade market develops. Mid best case-RGIII misses some time and Cousins fills in just well enough to cast his lot as a career backup and stays here long term. Mid worst case-RGIII struggles with effectiveness or injury and Cousins isn't very good or is just good enough to spark a controversy. Worst case-RGIII struggles with effectiveness or injury and Cousins sucks so we are back to square one. 3 out of those 5 scenarios leave us in a good position out of this draft strategy. |

I think that is a totally different situation. That 7th round QB may be lucky to make the team. Cousins was viewed by many as a potential starter in the NFL. For a team to draft two starting QB's, especially after giving up so much to get one of them, it is a bit of a head scratcher |
