I don't think money played too much of an issue. I think Davis being the starter, Paulsen the spot blocker and a developing Niles Paul played into it more than anything. If Niles Paul struggles then this doesn't happen. We went young...and it happened to also be cheaper. If money was really an issue they would have done this long ago.
? To me Paul struggled. He didn't show me enough to believe he has surpassed Cooley. I saw one good play and that was his TD catch on a corner end zone route. Otherwise hogwash. Personally I think the team is trying to cut corners where they can and if they can get players who play different positions then they are happy. Paul can play WR in the worst case, can block as a TE, and plays Special Teams well. About the only think I like about him is his Special Teams ability. |

The tight end, who has filled in at fullback with starter Darrel Young injured, would have counted more than $6 million against the salary cap this season if he had remained with the team. Shanahan did not rule out the possibility of the Redskins re-signing Cooley if he is unable to find a starting job elsewhere. “There’s a lot of scenarios that could still occur,” Shanahan said. “... Chris wants to be a starter in the National Football League.” Cooley had said during training camp that he was willing to fill any role to remain with the team. He played regularly at fullback during the Redskins’ three preseason games. Shanahan said he wishes Cooley well and the team thought it did what is right for itself and Cooley. |
Re: Chris Cooley Released
how much did they save this year?
how much did/will it cost to cut him?
The Redskins save $3.9 M in cap space this year, and $4.9 M in cap space in 2013. In both 2012 and 2013, the Redskins must carry dead cap charges of approximately $2.0 million each year. But the savings on base salary from his release more than offset this cap charge. This could be a slightly cap-motivated decision, because my understanding is the Redskins can choose to take as much as they want of the $36 M league-imposed cap penalty this year. If they take the Cooley cap space and carry $3 million more of the cap charge this year as opposed to next year, they could carry $21 M this year and $15 M next year. If they did that, Cooley coming off the 2013 books would free the $4.9 M in space I mentioned, plus the $3 M of cap charge, overall could create $7.9 M in space for 2013. |

Re: Chris Cooley Released
Makes sense...he'd cost us $6mil to keep him but we only free up $4mil by cutting him.
Sad to say but he's not worth that cap hit as a reserve. This front office is much smarter than the previous mess we had in charge. I guess I should just trust them on that kicker move this morning...they must know something we don't. |
Re: Chris Cooley Released
Great job of front loading all the contracts the Skins got penalized for after being told not to, now Cooley gets pooped on.

You can't blame the team in this case. When healthy, Cooley was a top 5 TE and was worth the contract. He's only 30 and broken down. You can't blame the team. |
Re: Chris Cooley Released
Have to say, Cooley is probably one of my favorite Redskins ever. It was apparent the past year or so that his injuries have caught up with him as he no longer remotely looks like he did in this video. It's a shame most of those years here were spent on bad teams. :(

Man, I hate to see Chris Cooley go. He was definitely one of my favorite players and a fan favorite! However, ultimately, this is what's best for the team.

Think I'll pick up a pair of these in his honor.

Even though we are on the cusp of the 2012 season, many moves (like this one) are about 2013 and beyond. We aren't going to compete to be a deep playoff run team this year but in 2013 with upgrades at C, RT and CB we can be. This move was about giving Paul the opportunity to develop over a full season to being a weapon at TE. They clearly moved him there with the future in mind. Let him play, learn and develop. Removing the emotion from the Cooley move, from a pure football move it's close to a no-brainer. Cooley was older, slower and coming off of major injuries in 2 of the last 3 seasons. Taking away how I feel about him, it's tough to argue against it. Paul is younger, faster, much bigger upside in 2012, 2013 and beyond to not give him the chance to blossom. Then if he is hogwash, which goes against virtually everything that insiders have been saying all camp, he gets replaced again by a younger player. At the end of the day, this is our backup TE position we're discussing. |

It seems like everyone is just assuming Paul is awesome and going to make the pro-bowl. The thing is, he's done NOTHING yet to prove he can do it. When Davis gets suspended for 1 year for testing positive (yes, i said When, not if), we're going to be stuck with Paulsen and Paul and its not going to be pretty. |

Re: Chris Cooley Released
Saw his jersey on the sale rack at the game on Saturday, right next to Landry's. He has lost more than a step, and this team has the talent at the TE position to move on without him. This is not a surprise.

Re: Chris Cooley Released
This sucks. I have a few newer skin jersey's and I was wondering which one would retire a skin. Portis, nope. Cooley, nope. Only one I have left is Moss....hmmm. Maybe next year.
|
Re: Chris Cooley Released
Yeah man, I wish Portis had retired as a Skin too. :(

Re: Chris Cooley Released
I met Cooley at his art gallery in Leesburg, so it saddens me even more to see such a great guy nearing the end of the road. He was a great Redskin and a bright spot during some pretty lean years. Hopefully he hooks up with another team, but if this is the end, thanks Chris, for some great memories.

If you're a Skins fan you should watch this. If you had any reason to not like to guy before I defy you to watch this and dislike him when it's over. No one can ever say he didn't give 150% everytime he stepped on the field. One of my favorites as well, unfortunately catching the "business" side of the game. |

Hail to Cooley! |
Re: Chris Cooley Released
It's all on Davis now, I hope the kid has grown up from his falling asleep in the locker room, to his "joint ventures" with Williams, and acting as his own attorney. Huge risk releasing Cooley with the history of Davis' behavior. Cooley a lock for the Redskins 10 for 90 as well as the Redskins ring of fame. Thank you Chris Cooley for all the great plays!
