A dead clock is right twice a day. As depth goes he is fine but I do not want him as a full time starter. |

Somebody get on the horn with Redskins Park |
Re: Official Redskins Free Agency Thread 2013 Part II
Doughty absolutely balled out in that Seattle game, BUT he is not a starting NFL safety, good depth and special teams player. I believe Merriweather can be a decent starter if he can just stay healthy. We need to draft at least 1 difference maker at safety. Someone that can make a play. I think upgrading here will do wonders for our defense. Also wouldnt mind checking out Huff at safety for cheap.

Re: Official Redskins Free Agency Thread 2013 Part II
People need to remember, just because Doughty was our second best safety last season, that doesn't mean he would even make the roster on half of the NFL squads. The guy is a familiar bandaid that can come up and make a good tackle or two, but suffers greatly when asked to cover or run someone down.
We need a true starting FS more than any other position on the team right now. If we can get a solid starter in the draft, like has been said before on this board numerous times, our CB AND SS play will take a step up drastically, and paired with our decent run defense, we would be a much improved squad. You keep the same secondary as last year or worse, and it will be very hard to repeat as NFCE champs, just for the fact that Robert won't be 100%. If we EVER needed our defense to step up to grow as a team, its this year. I do not see the offense carrying the defense this upcoming season. There has to be balance, or there will be disaster. The way I see it, Our postseason hopes lie with our secondary. If improved even just slightly, we will make a serious run. If we stay the same or get worse (hard to foresee the latter), then making the playoffs, especially with our schedule against some really top rate QB's, is going to be even tougher than last year, even with depleted Giants and Eagles rosters. |
Re: Official Redskins Free Agency Thread 2013 Part II
Indeed. Single-handidly blew up a couple/few plays on the back-field and otherwise had some great stops. It was his best game of the season, but he looked good in the 2nd half of the season IMO.
Just saying, we all know how limited the team is per cap space. Would I like an upgrade at SS? Sure. But want in one hand, shit in the other, and see which hand is more full at the end of the day. An upgrade at FS will help the D much more than replacing Doughty if he starts at SS. BTW, is BM better at SS or FS? I thought it was SS but some have implied he's a FS...
FS, who can play SS, but his ball hawking skills far outweigh his tackling. |
Doughty had a hell of a game against Seattle in the playoffs.
I was going to say that! It was easily his best game of his career. Doughty has to 2 or 3 on the longest tenured current skins list. |
Re: Official Redskins Free Agency Thread 2013 Part II
Just to clarify, im all for Reed returning. Easily his best season last year. He is a much needed leader. I like him on special teams and in certain packages than put him in the box. But we need a starter to step up at the SS position.

Re: Official Redskins Free Agency Thread 2013 Part II
First D Hall and now Reed Doughty.
Its like we have forgotten our secondary issues from last year. Lets just bring everyone back and put them on the field. Bring the same people back and expect better play...sounds like a plan.
Well, one plan might be that a better pass rush makes your secondary better. And that's actually possible, isn't it? |
Doughty had a hell of a game against Seattle in the playoffs.
he was an animal out there, i don't know if he was off the leash or just extremely motivated or what, but can he show up for every game?
FS, who can play SS, but his ball hawking skills far outweigh his tackling.
From what little I remember he's a hell of a hitter, but yeah, that doesn't always translate into tackling skills. |
Re: Official Redskins Free Agency Thread 2013 Part II
Fred Davis sure looked pissed that no teams are pushing for him on NFL AM this morning. I think he is going to settle for a 1 year prove it deal.
|
Re: Official Redskins Free Agency Thread 2013 Part II
With his track record off the field and injury history...that is all he deserves.
Earn your keep, Fred. We know you can...just prove it. |

I dont know what type of scrilla he expected, but the 1 year "prove deal" is en vogue ala Flacco. Davis needs to sign our offer in get in camp. Once we get done with the penalty, he will get paid. |
Re: Official Redskins Free Agency Thread 2013 Part II
Yeah I gotta agree with you guys. Fred just has to many question marks to warrant a decent long term deal. He should just sign a one year deal and prove that he is healthy. I am sure that is what is holding up a long term deal more than the off field stuff. Teams want to make sure that achilles is good to go before they give him 5-6 mil in guarentees and a 4-5 mil/yr contract.

After seeing that footage from the nightclub it's hard to muster up any enthusiasm for bringing him back, even if it's only for a one year deal. The guy is a scumbag and we don't need him in our locker room. |
Re: Official Redskins Free Agency Thread 2013 Part II
^ I disagree. Not every player is going to be a chior boy in the locker room and that incident happened 2 years ago. People make mistakes. Would you think it fair to not be hired because of something that happened two years ago and it wasn't characterized criminal ( no arrest). These are football players, not politicans, teacher, etc.

I'm with you there. If he stays healthy, plays well this year, and becomes one of RGIIIs prime targets, he'd get a nice contract from the skins next offseason when we have money - not just to sign FAs, but to lock up our own guys to long-term deals. |

Well if it's between us and the Browns for Fred Davis, maybe Cleveland is moving on?

Perhaps not the best line for the Redskins FO to play, but the perfect summarization of what happened. I hope we get him back. I don't trust Paul and while I like Paulsen, he's not a difference maker. |

If they were, they would have had no problem paying him. They're in good shape. Speaking of Cleveland...Cribbs was supposed to be traded to the Cardinals but they won't finalize the deal until his knee is 100%. |

At this point I can't see him doing anything but coming back to the Skins. He obviously doesn't have any leverage over the Skins as FA has been going for over a week now and he hasn't gotten a bite. I think he gets a one year prove it deal with a low base salary and incentives. |

Lol, the funny thing is when I was typing that I thought something similar about 2 seconds afterwards. Most likely around the time I was typing "don't need him." Either way when Matty offered to let me modify my name a year or two ago I should have gone with Bag fan because the truth is I just love bags. |
