The Eagles only advantage, IMO, is the element of surprise. Chip Kelly will pull some weird stuff. If it's enough to throw us off our game, then we could have a close ballgame. I don't believe it will be, however, especially because of Fletcher running the defense.

Skins 38 - Eagles 7

Eagles turn the ball over early and often and can't get into the flow of Kelly's gameplan.

Thanks for posting, now I know I want for lunch.

But yeah, lots of turnovers for Chippy.
Important thing about our pre-season, and yes overall it's meaningless, is that our offense was effective even without most of the 1st string. Point being that our whole team, especially offense, is on the same page, and executing efficiently. I don't see the Eagles defense as particularly better than any of the starting defenses in preseason, and putting Griffin, Morris and Garcon on the field together is going to be to much for the Eagles. If anything, I worry we get a big lead early, and then let off the gas, and the Eagles make a comeback.
Two things:

(1) Even with a big lead, I just don't see Griffin as the type to allow the team to ease up. Just generally, he's too smart and too competitive for that. In addition, this is his "I told you so" moment in front of a national audience. I am certain he has been waiting eight months to erase the image of him collapsing on the field and the bad taste of losing. We will undoubtedly lose games this season - this will not be one of them. If RGIII has anything to say, this team will be making a statement Monday night. "It's our night!"

(2) I really mean it when I say the Eagles don't have character. When a team's leaders are Vick and D. Jackson, that team is simply not going to have the strength/resiliency to rally back. In the past, and for all his multitude of faults, Reid was the glue - taking the blame when things went wrong, absolving players, etc. Don't see Kelly doing that. I really think the Eagles are vastly overrating themselves & Kelly's system and underrating the leadership dearth on their team.

Re: Skins vs Eagles week 1

I have gone back and forth on Kelly. At first, I was pretty sure he wasn't going to be a Spurrier b/c he said the right things initially about working hard and understanding that the NFL is different. Since then, I think more and more he is playing lip service to the second part and is operating under the same fallacy as Spurrier was - all he has to do is coach'em up a bit and his system, with a tweek here and there, will transfer to the NFL.

I don't think he is Spurrier bad but I could easily see him pulling a Petrino or N. Saban. He may work hard, but I just don't see him as a leader/motivator of men (not college guys). Sure, he works hard, but it seems he is working hard to prove his system will work. Like Spurrier, he went out and got a bunch of his college guys to plug into his system. It seems to me he is thinking, as Spurrier did, "My system will make up for their talent deficiencies."

I think he is in for a huge fall and the team that remains in Philly doesn't have a Brian Dawkinsesque guy to keep them together.

Either way, it'll be fun to watch the Redskins do to the Eagles what they did to us (59 points) back in 2010. 28 points in the first Quarter in 'Thug Bowl'.

I fully expect us to beat the dogs**t out of them. I think our defense has been practicing things that will totally stop the Iggles offense from getting into any kind of rythem whatsoever. Cofield and our LBers will play like rabid dogs and as Joe said, Robert is gonna shine....and he has the motivation and talent around him to do it. I agree with you. This poster from an Eagles board, however, disagrees. Doesn't the ignorance make you want to barf?
Between the Redskins having a terrible defense, already suffering some defensive losses early in the season, being 1 of the most poorly coached and run teams for the last 20 years and them having no film on the New Eagles,, I would think the Eagles should have a HUGE HUGE advantage in that game.

I get it that our defense has endless questions. But there is not 1 thing I can think of that favors the Redskins if Kelly has even the slightest clue of what he is doing...

Redskins - they stink and this should literally be 1 of Kelly's easiest wins of the year. Not because the Eagles are great. But because of what I said above.
I go back to the Thanksgiving day win against the Cowboys. We took a big lead in to the half then came out and let them back in. Granted they never caught up but, IMO, Griffin and the offense settled back several times.

If it is a truly new era though we will take the lead and never look back.

The Eagles have a terrible offensive line and only 3 offensive weapons: Vick, McCoy, and Jackson. They have a new offense and a new head coach.

Meanwhile, we have a good offensive line anchored by a Pro Bowler at LT; top-notch offensive threats in RG3, Morris, Garcon, and Davis; an excellent 3rd down back in Helu; a very solid receiving corps behind Garcon; and a top-tier fullback. We have a veteran, Super Bowl winning coach and a proven offense. Clearly, at the very worst, our offense will keep up with theirs.

Well every team has part of that offense in their playbook. They just don't run it all the time.

I think as far as Kelly is concerned, right now he has a QB that turns the ball over too much and can't stay healthy. I think some weeks it will work and others where they won't get first downs and throw their defense back on the field. This type of offense isn't anything the NFL hasn't seen...Buffalo and the Benglas ran it back in the 80's early 90's. Those offenses just didn't have all the misdirection and window dressing.

The defense practices daily against one of the best offenses in the league.

How much more testing do they need?

Since the bye week last year, and through the pre-season, the defense really stepped up. My biggest concern is Fletcher getting hurt, because he truly commands the defense on the field, and Merriweather going against the Eagles because the number of snaps they will take will be hard on his recovery. Otherwise, every level of the defense is capable of stopping the threat that the Eagles can bring. Of course they will get a couple big scrambles, and runs by McCoy, and even probably a long one to Jackson, but a consistent offense that matches our points, I don't see it.

Once the first football is kicked off on Thursday I'll be entering a Twilight Zone of NFL lunacy. Nothing else matters.

I think it may be worse for me given that when I first got interested in football I was limited to a tiny column of coverage in a British newspaper every week. Never thought I'd live here or go to an actual game. I am a monster.

I have a TV in my garage and on my back porch. I can catch the games on Sunday and still get a few things done around the house. I have to fight the urg to watch college ball because that would kill my weekends. Now if the skins are on the only things that I'll do is grill and drink beer.

Monday night I'll be dedicating my game to 8 year old Tara Sankner battling inoperable astrocytoma. For each touchdown I score I'll be donating $2,500 to her family to help cover the costs of treatment and growing medical bills. It's gonna be a real treat to watch the Eagles go three-and-out in 20 seconds, give up a 12-minute touchdown drive, and then go three and out in 20 seconds AGAIN. Playing with a purpose, I like it. It be nice if all the vets on this team did the same.

I recall Robert saying that after his first TD he will celebrate dance like the young make a wish kid did earlier at OTA's.

Re: Skins vs Eagles week 1

The thing which keeps bothering me going into this game is that a lot of Skins fans (including myself) are overly confident. Some people are predicting an onslaught of points.

Another thing that worries me about the Eagles is McCoy, Vick and DeSean Jackson. Those guys, we rarely play all 3 of them at once, because one of those guys is usually hurt. Well we get all 3 of them healthy at once. These 3 are very explosive. A rookie safety and injury riddled strong safety doesn't help stop those 3 players.

A lot of people have mentioned, and I'd have to agree, that McCoy in the zone read/stretch zone is going to be scary and tough to stop. He's already shifty and elusive as hell in a normal offense. I just have visions of McCoy in the open field and Rambo and him are 1 on 1 and McCoy just jukes the hell out of Rambo for a long TD run.

Vick has said that he feels like Chip Kelly has made him a better QB again by putting him in the pass happy offense. We shall see if he's playing like the Vick of old (2010, 2004) or the Vick of the past few years. Lets not forget, he can still run, and we don't fair well against Vick as a starter, history has shown.

Another side of this game to think about is the star player, RG3. He hasn't played in a game in 8 months. He hasn't taken a hit or sack in 8 months. He's going to be rusty to start off the game. His teammates haven't been catching passes with him under center 11 on 11, up until this past week when he was cleared to practice. Its going to be a matter of when will the rust come off? The first snap? The first series? first quarter? first game? I remember Tom Brady a few years ago coming off a torn ACL and he was clearly freaked out and not himself going against the Bills (ironically they were featuring their new up tempo offense as well).

The other thing we need to think about is the Zorn effect.
You're confused, by 'Zorn Effect', what I'm saying is the effect of having a new head coach with an unknown system. We think we know what Kelly is going to run in the NFL, but we still have no clue what he's going to call on certain downs. Just like Zorn other teams didn't know Zorn had the guts to call a draw on 4th and 2 from the 48. They didn't know Zorn would call trick plays on special teams. But like all new head coaches, they are figured out by about the midway point of the season when all teams have enough tape to figure out new coaches plays and tendencies. They problem is the we don't play our first game against Philly after week 8, we play them week 1. That is eerily concerning.

Whats to say the eagles don't start hot, RG3 is slightly rusty 2 series in and we start panicking early on forcing plays or stupid fumbles or penalties then the whole game we're playing catch up to a potentially explosive offense, while Phillys crap defense can play a bend but don't break approach with a 14-0 lead..

(I'm just saying this to play the cautious side of things. I still think we win big)

Plus, what if Shanny pulls the ol' switchero and starts Rex instead. I have my reserves about this game. If Kirk wasn't hurt weeks ago, I would actually give him the start.
What got me down from off that ledge my friend is the team looked good in preseason, run game will be there, as will a healthy Davis and garçon. We can't even think of polumbus but I trust we can stick Paulsen next to him. Lastly, our defense can make it happen.
