Re: Free Agency Begins in a Week, Whats the Plan?
By my calculation, we need to add roughly 7 to 9 starters on this team to be competitive...
RT, G, ILB, DE/NT, FS, SS WR... I just don't see how we can fill all those holes in the draft and FA, so I don't see the reason to spend more than a few million a year on any player at any position... Like we seem to always be, we are rebuilding ladies and gents... |
Re: Free Agency Begins in a Week, Whats the Plan?
I'd rather have Byrd than Ward. We need more of a FS than a SS.
My two cents:
Free agents with guesstimated cap hits: WR Brandon LaFell 5 T Anthony Collins 5 ILB D’Qwell Jackson 6 ILB Perry Riley 5 FS Mike Mitchell 6 FA signing total: $27 mil. Obviously I am presuming that the axe will fall to create cap space. Draft: trade 2nd round pick down to middle of second round, picking up extra mid-third rounder – then: C Marcus Martin 2/50 WR Donte Moncrief 3/66 G Dakota Dozier 3/80 NG Daniel McCullers 4/98 DE Brent Urban 5/130 TE Richard Rodgers 6/162 CB Andre Hal 7/194
I like the FA's, don't know enough about the draft guys. |

Per John Keim: Ward is more an in-the-box safety, but he can play deep as well. Cleveland ran the same 3-4 style of defense Washington uses, so Ward would be a good fit if the Browns let him walk |

Agreed... If we spend large on a FA this year, which I hope we don't, I would choose between Mack or Byrd... My second mid tier targets would be Joseph and Nicks... |
Re: Free Agency Begins in a Week, Whats the Plan?
I believe it was Bill Polian on the NFL XM channel said Byrd's game was based on his speed and as you get older you get slower (there are exceptions to the rule), but he said people should be aware of this meaning no long contracts.

Let me make a correction... Speed to read the QB and diagnose the play, which never goes away as opposed to what you are referring to, literal speed of the player... |

I hope you are wrong in your guesstimates of the salaries LaFell is called "stone hands" by a Charlotte paper.... NO THANKS I agree with Collins, and the salary. DaQwell is not worth $6 million.... I would take him at a lower price Perry Riley ditto.... I would keep him at a lower price Mike Mitchell has started one season, and had decent stats, I hope you could get him for less than $ 6 million I like the idea of trading down, if Shazier, Tuitt, or Ford, isn't available get more picks |
Re: Free Agency Begins in a Week, Whats the Plan?
Jairus Byrd or T.J. Ward- I want one of them.
D'Qwell Jackson Emmanuel Sanders Anthony Collins Lets make it happen |
Re: Free Agency Begins in a Week, Whats the Plan?
Champ Bailey was released, would he finish his career where it started?

Nope. |
Re: Free Agency Begins in a Week, Whats the Plan?
Scratch D'Qwell Jackson off your list. Signs 5 year, $22 million (I think) deal with Indy

No way. He's old, slow and broken down. |

That's a really good cap friendly deal for a guy whose solid, yet not flashy. Would have been nice to have him come on board, but Indy has a more consistent atmosphere of success the last decade or so, so I can't blame the guy. |

Lil cheaper than I expected. Take the best available ilb off the board, so now that market ahould be set. I hope Riley's camp pays attention to the numbers. He deserves half that. |

I was hoping he would choose to sign with us. Do you know if we were talking to him at all? |
Re: Free Agency Begins in a Week, Whats the Plan?
Per Roto wire:
Free agent FS Jairus Byrd is reportedly seeking an average annual salary of at least $9 million per season. That would make Byrd the highest paid safety in the game. Dashon Goldson got a five-year, $41.25 million deal from the Bucs a year ago, Eric Weddle signed a five-year, $40 million deal with the Chargers in 2011 and Eric Berry's rookie deal will pay him $8.41 million in 2014. Byrd is a good bet to get what he wants thanks to the rapidly rising salary cap and growing need for an elite center fielder in today's NFL. The Browns and former Bills defensive coordinator Mike Pettine could show interest. So 40+ million for a safety? You in? |

I feel he is worth that. But what the hell do I know? If you feel he is the best FS in the game, which most believe he is, then you have no choice but to pay him in the 40-that illion dollar range. Why are Weddle and Berry worth that but not Byrd? |
Re: Free Agency Begins in a Week, Whats the Plan?
We are going to be aggressive in getting a FS, not sure we'll be successful though. That and a DT.

Good to know, like I said I would be happy with either Ward or Byrd. No idea which DT though. Anyone got a list of the FA DTs? |
Re: Free Agency Begins in a Week, Whats the Plan?
Champ Bailey was released, would he finish his career where it started?
Well, he will be playing safety where ever he goes...but as others said, too old and slow now. We need someone like Byrd, Ward or Mitchell at that spot. Experimenting with rookies and cast-offs hasn't worked, time to get a proven star there. |
We are going to be aggressive in getting a FS, not sure we'll be successful though. That and a DT.
Somewhat surprised that we are going strong after a DT. I'm guessing Joseph is the target? Is the plan to move Cofield to DE if that's the case? Also could be an indication of what the plan is at LB. A 2 gap 3-4 DL is supposed to be a space eater and free LB up to make tackles. Maybe the plan isn't to invest heavily at ILB and hope to get by with a veteran and a draft pick with the expectation they will be kept clean by the DL. Any rumblings about priorities on the offensive side? |

The reasoning behind DT aggressiveness: Is Coefield gonna be playing DE alot? or are we gonna to a 4-3 look more often? Thanks SS |
Re: Free Agency Begins in a Week, Whats the Plan?
At this point I want the Linval Joseph, Brandon Spikes, and Malcolm Jenkins/T.J. Ward Combination.
Did anyone see @Jsteelznskins reporting that Tanard Jackson will be reinstated? LOL |

Weddle is good, i just dont think he is worth 40 million on that Defense. just my opinion. I just dont know about shelling out 40 mil to any player with all the holes on defense. I would feel the same about give Rak 40 mill as well. Thanks for the info Smoot. Coefield could handle that. |

No one is saying pay him 100million, but you would have a hard time convincing me why the top safety in the game isn't worth 40-45 million over 5 years at 27 years of age. People didnt wanna pay Garcon 42 million. Just baffles me, so if Byrd and Weddle arent worth 40 million each, what are they worth? |
Re: Free Agency Begins in a Week, Whats the Plan?
I get what your are saying, but replacing so many positions on the team at once, this is a new regime; it is like rebuilding. Dont want to max any position out, kinda want to feel out the new team before i say we must have this one guy at all cost.
|
Re: Free Agency Begins in a Week, Whats the Plan?
Ok I'll bite, how many positions do you think we are replacing in one off-season?
|
Ok I'll bite, how many positions do you think we are replacing in one off-season?
I think at least 7 new starters. Maybe 8 depending on what the hell we do with the Oline and if we promote from within (Gettis, City of, McRib). Also think we could add a second TE who would be like a new starter the way Gruden uses 2 TE sets. |
Re: Free Agency Begins in a Week, Whats the Plan?
What about bring Champ back home, and moving him over to safety? It would be nice to see him back in the Burgundy and Gold once he gets released from Denver. But they need to focus on the OLine in free agency if they aren't looking at the draft to sure it up. Been awhile since we can really say we had a top tier line
|
Re: Free Agency Begins in a Week, Whats the Plan?
Champ is old and injured. I don't even think he wants to come back to DC. Back in the day, dude asked to be traded if the Skins franchise tagged him. Which I think at that time, the Skins wanted to do.
I don't think he'd be trying to come back here. |
