I know all of you RGIII fams will say no, but I wonder if this starting QB proclamation is more about the draft and the possibility that QB Mariota might slip to #5 and we are sending out the obvious smoke signals that we would want to trade the #5 (QB Mariota) for multiple picks? So by saying we have our QB we do not want Mariota.?.?.
I think the timing of this announcement and it being screamed loud from all media is very draft related. Now all of you RGIII fans can tell me how wrong I am and RGIII is Gruden's (Snyder's) favorite.
If we wanted to drive demand up for our pick, wouldn't we want to act like we would take Mariota ourselves unless we get an offer we can't refuse? |
Re: Next years QB
One thing nobody's mentioning and that's the casual way that Jay Gruden tends to answer questions. When he says we're going with Robert as the number one guy, I don't think that's intended as a firm commitment to RG3. I think it simply means that he will get the starter's reps in OTAs and minicamps, and then probably leading into training camp. But I don't think it means that Cousins is ruled out from having the opportunity to unseat Robert.
If Jay finds in training camp that Robert is still behind as a pocket passer and that Cousins looks better, I think he'll make the switch. I think it's a very non committal thing at this point, based on the fact that he hates Cousins's woe-is-me approach when he gets intercepted, so much that Robert is the best of a bunch of very shitty options.
Yeah I don't think it means much in the long run. Nothing is written in stone. People need to chill. |

I think this is exactly what he means. Just kill the drama/story prior to training camp and let Robert/Kirk duke it out for the starting position once TC begins. |
Re: Next years QB
I don't think someone disagreeing with you has anything to do with them being a fan of RG3. The reason I disagrees with you is because RG3 status as a starter has been a hot button issue since 2013 season. I believe if we wanted someone to pay the king's ransom for Mariota. I think it would make more sense for us to give the impression that might draft him. That's just the way I see it.
By simply naming RGIII the starter does not kill/deflate any unwanted "hot button" media attention. The unwanted attention will always be there.....if RGIII is given the starters position and continues to play like has the last two years the heat only will be tuned up. The only thing that will negate the unwanted "hot button" media attention you all are talking about is winning....and making the playoffs regardless of who our Qb is. So naming RGIII your starter in February does nothing. Do you feel better that he was named starter on February 18th? Will the media be less critical of RGIII? Which is why I float the idea that our new astute GM is posting the for sale sign in the front yard for the #5 pick because it could be MM a prized QB. Let the bidding/negotiations begin. |
Would anyone draft QB Jamarcus Winston at 5?
Yes - I think that is why Gruden came out and said RG3 is the starter. If MM falls to 5 we make the trade and pick up another draf pick or two. |

Re: Next years QB
Who wants to trade RG3 for Jay Cutler straight up?
I don't think we'll be seeing any trades like that anytime soon. Now that we have Scot McCloughon running the personnel big trades like that will be limited, unless truly necessary. IMO. I see us being more of a "picking up lots of unheard of free agents for more competition and stuff" team, instead of the usual "put all our eggs in one basket with a major trade" type team. Then once we've compiled a decent roster (meaning upgrades at almost every position) they'll start focusing on individual players and positions. |

I've always said this, they'd seriously have to think about it. Not saying they do it though. He's going to Tampa. No question about it. |

i'm just making excuses, but it would seem like he either would be trying to be more aware of his feet, or getting out of the mindset of relying on his feet. overall, who cares, it's like a slip 'n slide, if it works you're a genius, if it doesn't you're an idiot. |

Anything is possible in today's NFL. Highly unlikely, but then again, last year I thought Dallas would suck with the worst D in the history of the NFL, I thought Romo was done, and I thought Garrett was out of the NFL by this time -- but they turned it around. I'll be rooting for Griffin, but my gut tells me we'll need to draft another QB next year. |

Re: Next years QB
I believe about 3/4ths of that interview. I do believe the part about Snyder enabling Griffin and having him go into the coaches office about plays that are unacceptable. That isn't some shit a coach makes up for no reason. In fact, he was very respectable about Robert in the interview.
The McNabb trade? Not sure I buy that, but SS has said that often times Bruce would come up to somebody and say that "you can do what you like, but Mr. Snyder strongly feels that..." statements. Could it have happened? Probably so, but more likely a piss poor move that blew up in Mike's face. The one thing that makes me believe Mike more than Dan is Mike's history with trading. When you look back, he didn't give up a bunch of picks for players. It wasn't his thing, and for it all of a sudden to start at the Skins? I do believe Dan was so enamored with Griff that he and Bruce talked Mike into that disaster of a trade.
Yeah, it's often not Bruce that says that. It's other in the organization. Others who are team execs, but not really football execs. Would probably be easier to take if the (then) GM was saying that As for the McNabb deal what I'd always heard and believe mentioned is that Bruce got wind of the opportunity to acquire McNabb (I think during the combines) approached both Snyder and Shanahan about it. Snyder loved the idea and Mike Shanahan did not. Kyle especially did not |
Re: Next years QB
Bingo.
Mike Shanahan did his share in continuing to f*ck this franchise over. Can't believe some people here believe everything he says or act like he's a f*cking victim. He can go to hell for all I care.
Both Shanahan and Snyder were to blame for the mess during Mikey's reign. At first I laid it all at Shanny's feet but Danny continued to meddle, undermining his coach. Ultimately we will never know who holds most of the responsibility but a muck up that big no one person can cause. It takes a lot of raging egos. |

Pretty evident Shanny was right; owner, gm, Qb and coach not on the same pages...its called dysfunction folks |
Re: Next years QB
Looks like Shanny's redemption tour is working as a lot of people are eating up everything he's saying.
Must be nice not to take responsibility over anything, just point the finger, and have everyone believe you. |
Re: Next years QB
I think it's fantastic that Gruden got in front of this thing and named RGIII starter right away. That way, there is no offseason distractions. Let RGIII know that the ball is in his court, and he's the man. Allow him to rise above or implode in preseason.
And yes, could be a smoke screen to up his value in case there is a trading partner. |

Re: Next years QB
I don't get the "there's no distractions" talk. This team has won 7 games in two years. Everyone outside of 71, 46, 11, 88 and 91 should have to compete for their jobs. I'd have competition everywhere, not just at QB.
As far as Shanahan, I know he may be a bit insecure. But who are you going to believe. A two time SB winner who's still well respected around the league? Who knows what it takes to win a SB? Or a owner who's a loser at football and a spoiled, entitled underperforming QB? |

Shanahan the GM is the problem. If he woud just stick with coaching and not wear to many hats then he MIGHT get back to winning. Giving up GM duties worked wonders for Mike Holmgren when he was in Seattle. He had the same struggles as Shanny. When he handed iver some of his power The Seahawks went to a superbowl under him. |
