Re: Giants Post Game Reactions

Re Cousins 2 interceptions. I think the second is much worse than the first.

1st int - the giants were game planning to only have to defend the short or mid range routes. prince is able to let the play develop in front of him, predict the route and jump it. garcon did a poor job of running a wide sloppy angle instead of cutting in front of prince to make sue he had inside leverage on the ball.

if we dont stretch the field in the passing game, every D Coord will have their guys playing the short to mid stuff, keep the play in front of them, and allow them to jump routes. corners and safeties do not have to worry about contain or a guy getting behind them.

the pass plays are becoming very predictable w Desean out.

making it way to easy to gear up on the run and keep pass plays in front of defenders.

i want cousins to make that same throw, i want garcon to run a sharp route and i want us to dial up some long balls so defenders cant assume our receivers will be breaking no farther than 12-15 yards down the field.

2nd int - cousins has to know down, distance and when to press and when to not press. he said in an interview this preseason that he has to learn to not force a throw in every situation, particularly when the risk is high (squeezing/forcing it in), but the reward is small (4-8 yd gain at best).

1st and 10 on the giants 34. cousins CANNOT force that ball to carrier. its first down, the play broke down, you have already scrambled outside the tackles .. just throw it away.

I don't mind losing to the likes of the Patriots or Packers -- truly elite teams that we're not realistically going to beat. For those games, I want to see some fight and for it to be respectable.

But for games like last night and the Dolphins for that matter, we can beat those teams. It would just be nice for us to win our fair share of those games, and we don't seem to do so. We had all kinds of chances to score points and eliminate mistakes, and just didn't get it done.

The Giants and Dolphins are mediocre. Unfortunately, I think the reality is -- so are we. (Maybe the franchise took Zorn's "stay medium" admonition a little too much to heart.)

Lots of insomniacs on this board I bet (myself included). A friend who is a huge Patriots fan called me yesterday to tell me that as it's Thursday night against the Giants, we won't be in the game at any point. Honestly, if he calls me today, I am going to get some blowtorches and wrenches and get medieval....
Can't understand the hate on Cousins. Yes i know he is a 4th year player, but this is his first and only season where he has began the year as the starter, gotten all the 1st team reps, etc.. If we are to be fair in his assesment, you have to at least give him one full season as being the starter, maybe even more, before moving on.

How many seasons did Jason Campbell get? 4 seasons? RG3 got three seasons. Cousins needs to at least get two seasons as starter under his belt before we can really judge him, IMO
It because people are so caught up with the splashy 1st round picks or the cool names like RG3.. If someone cant't see he has alot of talent, then they are blind. All QB's throw picks. Maybe the Colts will cut Luck because he threw 3 picks last week..
What we saw last night from Cousins was his continued failing to step up when the pressure is on in a big game. HE still could have rebounded from his two blatant mistakes but he failed to do so time and again with his inaccuracy. He is flawed. If we give him 13 games to prove himself he will be a backup the rest of his career.

There are reasons why he was never traded the last few offseasons.
Looked like to me he started to get it together in the 2nd half. Did you forget the Jones, and Garcon fumbles?

P.S. the Jets just tried to trade for him before the season..

I hope Cousins is the answer, the QB class this year is terrible. Goff is the best QB, but he is so small, he will get blasted, and have a hard time holding up.

Jones - looking like a 1 hit wonder
Hackenburg - completely overrated
Cook - everything I read about him says he is similar to Cousins, even same school, inaccurate and turnover prone

Ehhhhhh? Do we want any of those guys?

This is exactly how I feel. The first one Prince A jumped the route cause he knew Garcon was running the dig. I think KC needed to pick the defender up quicker, rather than already had his mind up as to where he was throwing it.

The second one was just terrible. No reason to throw that ball at all. Just terrible.

We all knew there would be days like this from KC. Up and down. But to me I'm not going to jump off a cliff and judge him after 3 starts. I want to judge him after the season.

i agree with the bolded part from Skinsfan69 as well. im not jumping off a cliff. i look forward to cousins weekly radio interview to hear his comments.

what he knew he had to work on preseason (not forcing throws when he didnt have to and when the reward was low) .. he reverted back to. once.

someone sd it earlier in this thread. while he did throw the ball away sometimes, you could see he was doing it very reluctantly. like it caused him actually physical pain.

Might not be needed, but unless you have the old Ravens defense it sure doesn't hurt. Redskins are due for a QB that starts for like 10 years. It would sure be nice.

lol it was the strangest most awkward thing. like RG3 trying to slide.

large men are chasing you to the sideline, coaches have hounded you for months to just throw the ball away .... and he just cant bring himself to do it.

kirk - you dont have the arm strength to throw a good ball on the run anyway. kirk throwing on the run = inaccurate ball.

30 - yes i agree. i think a lot of people agree with that. just wasnt ready to make an adjustment when D coord zeroed in on the run and short to intermediate passes.

to see two steps backward. Just a couple minutes in a special teams blunder and a pick. Nothing seemed to go right, pretty depressing.

1st INT in my opinion was on Kirk throwing a slow ball as well. I am not going to blame Garcon. That was all Kirk from velocity to throwing to a bad place.

One thing I noticed more last night than any other game KIRK STARED DOWN HIS READ. He went through his progressions a couple of times but for the most part he was one his first read only.

Re: Giants Post Game Reactions

I guess I'm wondering if this all changes when Deshawn Jackson comes back and the Redskins have a legit deep threat. You guys know that Jackson wants to play against the Eagles in 9 days or so. At least then, Cousins can take some deep shots to a proven deep threat. He might still underthrow and get picked, but hey, maybe it will be 40 yards down the field and not inside the Redskins 20.

WillH 09-25-2015 03:54 PM

Re: Giants Post Game Reactions

One other thing I meant to say earlier. Clearly, Cousins can't be the QB (at least yet) that can win the game with his arm, so I think it was a mistake to ask him to try. They gave up on the run, so yeah, they went down early in the game and the Giants used 8 min of the second half with one drive and their was a sense of urgency to score, but right now, asking Cousins to make plays with his arm is just unrealistic and likely to fail. If we stuck with the run, we stood a chance. It may have been a small chance, and with a better and/or more veteran QB they may have stood a better chance with shifting more to passing, but I think this team has to except their limitations.

They will lose games because they are one dimensional, and they will likely not make it to the playoffs unless they can find a way to throw the ball well, but I believe it is worth sacrificing the season on our own terms to establish an identity in the league as bruisers that will make you hurt even when they lose. I think there is too high of a risk that this team will continue to flounder unless they hold onto some identity and build on their strengths.

I'd rather they go 7-9 looking like a team that knows who they are and is clearly building themselves into something then 8-8 looking like they don't know where this bus is going (and more likely like 5-11 looking like fools).

Stepping away from the QB conversation for a minute, it's become more and more evident that Gruden is in way over his head. Under his 'leadership' turnovers, penalties and simply looking unprepared. In 19 games, the Skins have scored more than 3 offensve TD in a game 4 times. That's pathetic. He leads the league in excuses and minimizing the mistakes his teams makes. The guy is not a guy who is going to be successful here.

As for the QB, let's see what happens over the next 4 games.

– In years past, we’ve become accustomed to seeing “good Kirk Cousins” or “bad Kirk Cousins” game by game. This season, we have seen both the good and the bad—last night (-0.9) was no different. His first interception was a poor decision, and he left multiple scores on the field with under-thrown deep balls, particularly when targeting Jordan Reed (-0.9) early in the game. Some solid short and intermediate passing improved his performance somewhat, but fans will still be wondering how the game might have panned out if Cousins had hit on at least one of his opportunities with Reed earlier in the game.

– Speaking of Jordan Reed (+2.0 receiving), the Redskins’ tight end continues to be the most productive and most important target in the Washington offense. Snagging six catches for the third game in a row, his numbers would have been even better but for Cousins errant deep passing. The only thing letting Reed’s performances down is his inline blocking (-2.2 run-block), and with the injuries they have suffered at the position, they are simply unable to limit his responsibilities there to protect both himself and the Washington ground game.

– The upgrades brought in via free agency have bolstered Washington’s defensive line early in the season, with Terrance Knighton (+1.3) producing his best game of the season so far. However, the star of Washington’s defensive line is arguably Chris Baker (+5.0), whose six stops last night tied Keenan Robinson (+0.1) for the most on the team. Through three games, Baker is Washington’s highest graded defensive lineman, and is the only member of the Washington front seven—aside from Ryan Kerrigan (+0.3)—to boast a positive grade as both a run defender and pass rusher.

DE Chris Baker (+5.0)

Don't get me wrong, I'm not expecting a 'turnaround' at this point...just progress. So far in 3 games this could have been any season since 2009. Lose a winnable game on special teams. Beat a perennial bottom feeder (albeit one who has owned us recently) and then get embarrassed on national television.

Maybe I'm missing something. Have you seen him demonstrate leadership? Have you seen something that indicates that he is tactically better than the man across from him? Has he done literally anything that says, sure this has a good chance to be successful?

Re: Giants Post Game Reactions

I think Gruden will be a fine head coach long term. He was a rookie head coach last year. Can't hire a rookie and complain that he isn't a veteran. That said, I think Cousins will be the QB next year and his head coach, depending on performance this year, will be Gruden or Darrell Bevell with Bevell and Bill Callahan sharing OC duties. Either way, Cousins would likely get next year as a starter unless we were able to somehow draft Connor Cook which would mean we were around 2-14 this year and obviously Cousins and Gruden would be done..

Pure speculation though.

As much as people complain about Cousins, there aren't very many QB's that would be available to replace him that are arguably better that are still reasonably young. Chase Daniel could fall in there though..
