Matt Jones is not the answer at RB. He runs straight, no bend at his hips, no leverage. Too easy to knock over. He will be injured soon if he does not lower his center of gravity while running.
I have said this since I joined this site, rule #1 in football 101 stopping the run and being able to effectively run the ball. If we can not do this we will have a long season with no playoffs. It fucking kills me we suck at the basics in football.
According to some, we are "built" to be a passing team. You have to learn to walk before you can run or pass in this situation. We made the decision to spend a ton of money on our receivers and TE. We subtracted players from last year and did not replace them with quality talent. We basically created our current weakness.
I understand a team is built over time. But regressing should not happen.
Im not sold he is healthy...but I think he needs a full season to see if he can be the guy. If not Kelly should get carries.

But McDerp needs to commit to the run game...we should never be passing 3 straight downs.

Re: Skins vs. Steelers Positives and Negatives

You know, the more I think about it the more I think we're making a tactical error in running a one-gap front and thinking it will work with this level of defensive line talent. One-gap schemes are rooted in shooting the gap and getting penetration, which leads to pressure on the QB, but also disrupting run plays in the backfield. When you're not making a tackle for a loss, the hope is you make the RB have to cut or juke when he's two yards behind the line of scrimmage.

But we're just not quick enough along the front to penetrate. Baker occasionally gets a little penetration. You see RJF get it here and there. But it's not consistent enough to routinely disrupt.

Shooting a gap and going for penetration of course allows the guards and center to move to the second level and block the linebackers more often.

So my question is why do we have such a steadfast desire to stick with a one gap scheme? Like, have we ever tried flexing into a two-gap style to see what happens? Has Barry tried that and I just haven't noticed? Because I don't feel like he's ever tried it.

I grow frustrated with the lack of adjustment.

I wouldn't say regress. In all fairness we couldn't stop the run or run the ball last year. We also couldn't effectively rush the qb. After only one game I would- if i had to compare- say at the very least we are last years team. However I think we will be better than last year.
We improved in areas that maybe weren't ultra necessary to improve on, but that brings me back to the draft. Everyone on this board was saying things like "drafting for need is how you stay mediocre forever, and taking bpa is how u build a contender but it takes time". Now we are one game into the future and Josh Doctson has no impact on our run game on either side of the ball. Shocker. Lol. All the same people are questioning SM and our improvement. During the draft nobody was complaining. What did everyone mean when they said bpa was the way to go for the future??? Im not saying you specifically but im curious. If people now are going to say we did nothing to improve inour areas of need, than dont hip hip hooray when we dont draft for need!
Who did we subtract and not replace? I would imagine you , like alot of people, are referring to Alfmo?
The guys production has dwindled for three years. Last year he looked like he had mud feet. Other than one nice run for about 13 yards he averaged almost 3 against the Giants. Maybe you weren't referring to him but than who? Why everybody is acting like we let AP walk is beyond me.

The thing that continues to amaze me is how bad a game strategy coach Gruden is. Has there ever been a game where he clearly out coaches the opposition? It seems every time he comes in with a game plan that is just destroyed by the game plan of the opposing coach. Then he shows little ability to adapt at half time.

I think its primary one gap but it seems to me in some sub sets it can be 2 gap just based on scheme and looks the offense may give. Group needs to work better together to stop the run. Bruton and Cravens need to really step up in support...

a friend of mine pointed out that breeland shut down dez last season. that wasn't hard to do as he was dealing w nagging injuries; 9 starts / 31 catches / 401 yards / 3 touchdowns.

breeland is good but he's not the guy we gave over $35m fully guaranteed.

Re: Skins vs. Steelers Positives and Negatives

There appeared to be no in-game defensive adjustments at all. Offense or defensively. The most glaring were the continued 1 on 1 coverage of Breeland on Brown and the lack of blitzes. At the same time, we continued to play (to my untrained eye anyway) a soft zone in the middle of the field and they just ate it up after the first quarter.

The game plan wasn't working. Do something. Anything. ... but no.

[contrary to most, I think Breeland did as well as could be expected. He was really only beaten a couple of times and was generally right with Brown. There were several plays that no other QB/WR tandem completes between the timing and accuracy of Big Ben's passes and Brown's anticipation. No one was going to stop them one v. one Monday night. Even if you don't want to cycle Norman over, then let Norman go 1v1 on their WR2/3's and shade the safety over -- do something.].

As others have said, and at this point, I have no confidence that Barry will do anything that will raise the defense above its talent level. Particularly on game day.

Exactly! This is what I'm not mad at Breeland, he did his best, but some adjustment should've been made. He never got roasted, was almost every time in position to make a play, or one step behind, but against AB... what did Barry expect?

Yes to those who are citing adjustments... seemingly zero and thats really frustrating to watch. Hopefully the coaches realize this and learn from it, thats about all we can hope for at this point... well, we dropped the opener last season and were also 2-4 ... hopefully the team still has the mindset not to give up.

Re: Skins vs. Steelers Positives and Negatives

Our schedule was particularly weak last year; this year it is not. We are not that good a team, talent-wise, on the o-line and the d front 7. Makes it hard to do much of anything, if that's the case. We did not get better in the trenches. We did not get a better RB, center, or left guard. What do you expect, especially when you play a top team on Monday Night?

My main worry is that we do something stupid and fail to let McC build for another 2 seasons.

But on this game, if Cousins is better, we're at least in a shoot out. I didn't think they really stopped our passing game as much as Cousins f-ed in up at key times. Now,maybe what we're in the process of learning is that Cousins isn't the guy--this is his tryout. BUt I do hope he picks it up, or this year is going to be painful and Danny may get restless.

Please get a vet RB or two.

I'm all for Norman covering the best WRs, but no DB can do shit without a pass rush, and Big Ben is good even with pressure. And there was no pressure, really. Until we improve in the trenches, all the coaching in the world won't help, IMHO. I agree that we don't adjust well, but we still don't have the bodies, I think.

Maybe we'll get our shit straightened out, at least on offense, and maybe we'll generate some timely TOs on D. I sure hope so. But we're still building and we're not close yet. Hate to admit that, but there it is. Just fuking beat Dallas. The rest is more long term issues.

people act like every team is loaded with talent... this isn't college football folks, many teams have major holes... The giants, eagles and cowboys are all in the same boat as us in certain areas. There is no more "build for the future" in the NFL, it's all about now.

Re: Skins vs. Steelers Positives and Negatives

Late to the party....my 2 cents....

We punched above our weight this game. Steeler's are where we want to be in a year or 2.

But I also think the coaches didn't put us in the position to win.

Defense:
It is what it is.

Our DL personnel/run game personnel isn't stout against the run and the Steeler's taxed it.

In that regard I don't understand why Ricky Jean only played 22 snaps and Ziggy Hood played almost double. Ricky > run defender then Ziggy

I have nothing against David Bruton Jr, I like his physicality etc but even before his missed tackles from this game I thought Su'a Craven's should be the starting SS. Maybe it's one of those coaching nervousness issues they have starting rookies but Su'a needs to be on the field, kid is a playmaker.

Also, c'mon man you cannot let a team's best player beat you!
Their may be schematic reasons for not flopping side or putting Norman on Brown, but on crucial plays imho we gotta double the other teams best player.

Offense:

I don't care how we get the W. Im not gonna fret over Jay getting away from the run because imho that is who he is to be expected and our personnel in the passing game is certainly good enough to control/win games with. But we need our QB to be on point. As goes Kirk....etc...

On the whole I thought the playcalling was timid.

Bill Walsh said ~'be ware of the relative ease of completing the 3-step drop passes' and it seemed like either Jay called or Kirk wasn't pulling the trigger on downfield throws.
Gotta attack more intermediate and downfield....which piggybacks into.......

Jay made it easy for the defense (which is something I saw with the run game tells last year) through personnel groupings and formations.
The empty set of course allows team to know they can play all out pass defense, any good defensive coordinator is gonna have the upper hand once an offense is one dimensional.
This made it hard to throw intermediate and downfield.....which leads to....
Also, the same routes and pattern and can be achieved with a RB in the backfield especially when we don't even target the RB in empty.
Merely having a RB in the backfield and sprinkling in even "failed" run creates some doubt and still creates an opportunity for playaction. Some coaches preach that a defense is even more susceptible to play-action when they are playing the run game well.
Also, playing more base personnel creates the mismatches we like w/ our TEs vs their LBs/SS as opposed to there Nickle/slot CB/FS.

Oh, and I agree w/ Jay that he should have sacked up and gone for it on 4th and short.

Really interesting point and a good observation.

We ranked 9th against the run in 2014, the last year of Haslett's 2 gap 3-4:

And I dont buy the point putting Norman on the other side would tip off the defense they werent going to play zone, wouldnt all it would take is for Norman to line up on the other side when Brown switched and then still play zone?
Also they had all of fricking preseason to prepare for this game, did they not fucking think the Steelers wouldnt line Brown up on the other side and yet they didnt prepare for that!? Yep. Totally agree. Too predictable in all the wrong ways. We were out coached in every aspect of the game except special teams.

We should have been predictable as follows:

Heard Cooley on the radio yesterday talking about Thompson on the hitch route being open every play because the Steelers simply refused to cover it.

They didn't respect it and it was available every time he ran it.

Watched it this evening. It's right there.

He mentioned how Tom Brady threw 6 or 7 hitches in row last year in the playoffs. BB and Brady threw it until it was defended.

They go for the jugular and exploit a weakness till they take it away.

We do not.

It's almost like Jay and McVay give different looks for the sake of giving different looks and decide to call this play or that out of given look.

The whole coaching staff lacks the killer instinct to find a weakness and destroy it.

I am sure most of us are Bi-Polar, but some of these post are over the top. It was a bad game, but we need to get over it. We will go 6 - 2 at home and 3 - 5 on the road. We will be 9 -7 and a play off contender. We all agreed, we needed a few years to rebuild the roster. We have a crap ton of draft picks next year. In short, it is going to be ok.

Listened to NFL network, Mike Robinson coming into work he said 2 things that stood out on film:

1. Cousins had guys running wide open in the first half of the game down field. Sometimes he saw them and STILL didn't throw it. Said when you paid 20 million you have to make the plays, meaning he has to make the throw or even the attempts. Robinson said Cousins checked down too much first half and second half Pittsburgh made the zone adjustment because they knew they weren't covering Skins receivers correctly.

2. Skins front 7 were dominated by the Pittsburgh Oline...Pitts control the LOS and that is extremely strange for a Scott McC team. Generally his number one thing is defensively on the LOS is to force their will on the opponent in that trench. Everything starts on the dline.

Its just so fuckin sad

Said when you paid 20 million you have to make the plays, meaning he has to make the throw or even the attempts. Robinson said Cousins checked down too much first half and second half Pittsburgh made the zone adjustment because they knew they weren't covering Skins receivers correctly.

2. Skins front 7 were dominated by the Pittsburgh Oline...Pitts control the LOS and that is extremely strange for a Scott McC team. Generally his number one thing is defensively on the LOS is to force their will on the opponent in that trench. Everything starts on the dline.

Its just so fuckin sad
I think the Cousins thing will get fixed, it's the second thing that bothers me the most.

When I would see the guard pulling, he would literally devastate whoever was in the way. Sometimes it was two people! I've never seen our defensive line get worked like that.
True that.

Watching the Rams @ 49ers game will calm every body down. We got beat by a really good team, and still showed some good things, things we can build on for the rest of the season (at least 15 games left...)... We are far from being a trash team, with no hope, like the Rams or the Browns...

Not sure if it was nerves or rust with KC but he was definitely off his game. He can do a lot better and he needs to starting this week.

Going to give KC a pass for last week. He can play much better, we've seen him play better and I think he will moving forward.

The dline and front 7, really there is nothing that can be done. Mostly those are guys that other teams didn't want. Would Goldston be on most NFL teams? No! Would our two ILB be starting on most teams? No. Also Kerrigan was getting killed on run plays,

Also, we need to stop anointing Dak Prescott. Seeing all these predictions of him throwing for over 300 yards on us. I HIGHLY doubt it. If anything, our pass defense has improved vastly. Bryant won't have a HOF QB throwing to him, landing passes RIGHT in the hands.

After further review, I'm not going to say Breeland had a bad game. He could have made a couple more plays, but for the most part he was right with AB, or whoever he was covering. Excellent throws and great catches is the story here, and sometimes you just have to tip your cap to the execution of the players on the other side. Literally an inch here or there and it's all a different story.

I think it is very encouraging to see the faith the coaching staff has in Breeland. They see and know more than anyone on this board or any of the talking heads on TV. If Norman had been shadowing AB all game, the results might have been the same. Then everyone would be talking about how he's overpaid, etc. We'll never know...it's easy to say Norman would have shut him down, but I'm not so sure. Fact is, it's only one game. I'm pretty sure we won't see the same results on Sunday.
