Agreed.
The only thing I don't like from Barry is that I feel like he's not bringing his guys to play hungry, hard, the energy seems to be low on that side of the ball.

Other than that I'm not mad at his playcalling, he's doing a decent job considering the level of talent at his disposal.

As bad as they look this defense is pretty good in some areas, including sacks number.
And that's good for this week: carolina's right tackle is weak, last week he got humiliated on several plays by the chargers.

Cooley was on the radio earlier this week talking about how guys are consistently confused, out of position and missing assignments.

He suggests/implies that Barry may be putting more checks and contingencies on his players than they can digest. This has two negative effects. 1. missed assignments. 2. slow play because of thinking

Cooley says his favorite philosophy is to put as much on the players as they can handle e.g. Wade Phillips in the playoffs last year. No two looks were the same against the Pats.

We don't do anything well. He says pick something and play it well rather than playing 4 things poorly.

He's got a solid point (he knows a thing or two about football, doesn't he? ^^), we've seen too many hugely blown coverage for it to be 100% on the players.

I'm wondering out loud ("out writing"?): with our level of talent, how likely it is that opp off coord quickly find a way to expose the defense if they only have a few plays in their book?

I strongly disagree with your contention that the the effort of the defensive players is unsatisfactory. My observation is that the defensive players do play hard. They don't always play well and we certainly need better, faster players on defense but I don't question the effort.

As for Joe Barry, the problem with Barry is not that he is isn't a capable DC. The problem is that he is not an outstanding DC. If we're going to get to the next level as a team, we'll need outstanding coordinators on both sides of the ball.

I haven't seen effort or energy as an issue either. That falls mainly on the players anyway. If you can't get up for playing football you just don't belong here.

Tis true.. I just wish we had a more inside, in depth look at play calling, esp on 3rd down, to see how the talent we do have, is being used. I also think Breeland needs to wake up i dont know if he's unmotivated or still pissing and moaning over the Norman signing or what, but, its.not uncommon to have the sophomore slump so let's hope it's a small issue... Other D issues... No pass rush 85% of the time, nothing up the middle usually, qbs are hardly ever contained and break easy runs for 1st downs (this is where scheme and play calling gets looked at most IMO) ... oh yea, NO PASS rush or pressure most 3rd downs that I recall.... so i mean. Switching to a more aggressive coordinator could help if we yes, improve some speed and the line on D

Everyone blames Barry for the defensive struggles, he's surrounded by a pretty good defensive staff, including 2 former solid DC"s (Fewell and Manusky). You guys don't think he listens to their input? We lack 1 solid DL, S, ILB, pass rusher and we'll be fine. If they fire Barry, we got either Fewell or Manusky to take over.

Maybe I'm wrong. This is more of a feeling than an analyzed statement.

I really don't know what stat could give us and idea of how good our pursuit is. For me that's an aspect where talent isn't a factor, just pure motivation to give your best effort on every play.

But maybe part of what I perceive AT TIMES like a little lack of motivation is on, as said by DYoungJelly, Barry asking too much of his players and them hesitating... Hard to tell.

Exactly, Barry doesn't have much to work with to begin with. Only half our unit is starter worthy. I am in the give Barry one more year camp, but if they did ditch him I wouldn't cry about it.

Interesting comment. That is why I think some of us in here are for giving Barry another year, maybe even two to get some bona fide starters in here, especially on the line and at both LB, CB, and S positions. The overall quality of the unit is below average. Barry just doesn't have the horses to get the job done. Still, you have to adapt to what you have to work with and make changes to your schemes to maximize the unit's effectiveness. Thus, Barry definitely has to shoulder a lot of the blame for the current state of the defense.

If either Atlanta (vs. SF) or TB (vs. Dallas) lose today and we beat Carolina Monday night, then we will be back in the lead for the second wild card. I think I have that right.

It's time to bring in a DC with a proven track record. Someone that has a past of being able to get the most out of an average to below average group. Barry doesn't have that proven success anywhere in his past. Fair or not this is the Redskins, not Jacksonville. We should have the best coaches money can buy. Not some guy who's part of the fraternity.

I know some may frown on this but I'd be talking to Gregg Williams to see if he'd want to come back. Maybe even Jeff Fischer to see if he's willing to be a DC again. They struggled this past year but those guys know defense and have coached some very good defenses.

Well he got a lot out of a pretty average group back in 04. He also did a pretty damn good job in 05 and 07. He's also coached a SB winning defense that didn't have a ton of talent in New Orleans. He's a proven DC, Barry isn't. Just cause you don't like him doesn't mean he can't coach. He's an upgrade over Barry.

I'd also be fine with Gus Bradley. If Marvin Lewis is let go I'd be fine with him coming back, or Guenther. We just need someone that can coach better on 3rd down. I've never seen a defense that basically drops their drawers more on 3rd down than this one.

Dallas winning is a must now. Gmen took care of business. Pretty much only one spot open at this point. IF the Bucs win, I think they are more inclined to run the table than we are. Main thing is they have a defense and we don't.

I wouldn't be surprised if Marv Lewis ends up in LA. Not saying that is the likely thing to happen, but he would be the best HC candidate floating around if Cincy let him go. LA needs to get the butts in the seats or more to the point keep them there. Lewis would be a big name. If we do happen to make the playoffs and we see some sort of turnaround, I am not sure Scott will kick Barry to the curb. We all know he doesn't have very much to work with. If the D collapses his butt is gone for sure though. If he does go, I hope this ends the 3-4 experiment for good.

Been begging for it for a few weeks now.

To me that's the best way of getting your best 11 players on the field.

One thing I don't get: how complicated would it be to modify the playbook to have one guy playing SS (Cravens) and one guy playing FS (Blackmon/Ihenacho) ?
I mean if now they have to be able to play both, maybe Cravens could stick to SS and just switch sides with the other safety when the formation would dictate that he plays FS ?

Except he has the speed of a LB - and not a particularly fast LB - and, in the defense, that could be critical.

Since Barry doesn't assign a SS v. a FS, Cravens could end up covering the deep half of the field. While I am sure his study habits will improve his anticipation, you simply can't teach speed.

He really needs a creative DC to move him around and find a defense that maximizes his potential. Alternatively, the Skins need to drop the non-designation and have their safeties playing traditional roles so that Cravens can develop as a true SS. To do so, however, would significantly alter the way the Skins play defense.

People are talking about Cravens forty time (4.65?) like he's a damn offensive lineman. It's not THAT bad if he's playing in the box mostly.

Duke Ihenacho - 4.51
Donte Whitner - 4.4
Bashaud Breeland - 4.62
Will Blackmon - 4.46

Personally, I don't feel like speed is the issue at safety. It's being out of place...

Tonight is huge. I do not see us losing to Chicago, and if it comes down to a home game against the Giants to get in I do not see us losing there either.
Tonight scares me because it is not do or die yet.
Last few times into the playoffs we had to rattle off four or five in a row. Three is small potatoes. I trust this team. Tonight freaks me out BUT we win big.

Re: Skins vs Carolina Pre Game
Did I read correctly that it's possible NY would be resting their starters that day?
Yes. If they have the 5th spot clinched and aren't in contention for the Division Championship, they may rest some of their players. To win the Division, the Giants need to win both of their remaining games (@ Philly, @ Skins) and Dallas needs to lose both its two remaining games (Lions, @ Philly).

For the last game, both Dallas v. Philly and our game with the Giants are scheduled for 1/1/017 at 1:00 so, for NYG to be locked into the 5th spot (and, thus, be resting starters in our game), we need Dallas to beat the Lions or NYG to lose to Philly.

I am damn sick of hoping the Cowgirls win to improve our shot at the playoffs so I really want Philly to beat the Giants. I HATE Philly and love seeing them mired in blechiness so this is only slightly more palatable than rooting for the Cowboys - but since a NFC East rival has to win the game, might as well be the one that will likely work best for us.

Or ... we could just kick the Giants ass no matter who they put on the field.

You know what, I've been of those defending Barry, I don't think his playcalling is that bad, and that's an area where he's improved since the beginning of the season.

But.

The Cravens case is driving me crazy.
Cooley said weeks ago on his show Cravens should be playing SS. Have your best 11 players on the field.
He knows the position and as a LB he knows the coverage so he could learn the playbook quickly.
I really don't see how hard it is to go from a "both safeties can play both positions" situation to a normal "switching sides" system.

To me that's one of the easy things Barry could do to optimise his defense with the personnel he has.

I know part of this decision is on Gruden, but if Barry wanted it I'm sure it could've been done weeks ago.
