I do believe him. I don't think he called up Snyder demanded a trade.Doubt that's how it went down. He probably asked if it was an option if a deal can't get worked out. He needs to come down a little and the Redskins need to come up a little and get this thing done already. KC also needs to realize he has a good set up here. The grass isn't greener in SF. There are a lot of QB's that could put up good numbers in this offense.

Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag

I tend to believe his version of things too. If he was truly disgruntled and wanted out, he didn't have to sign the tag. He could force the issue if he wanted to. Some say he's too nice for his own good so that's why he won't put up the stink necessary to get traded, I don't buy that at all. He knows exactly what he's doing. The team wants him for the right price, and he wants to be here for the right price. He's not going to give a hometown discount and he shouldn't have to.

I listened to the entire Kirk Schefter podcast. I absolutely believe Kirk when he says he did not demand a trade. It would be entirely out of his character. I think his entire approach is to extract as much value out of the Skins as he can, so he can remain there at a fair number.

Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag

I believe him.

All this talk about him demanding a trade and not signing with the Redskins while Bruce Allen is the VP just seemed a bit out of character. He just doesn't strike me as a guy who's going to purposely tell the media he dislikes someone of authority with the company he works for.

I basically believe him, I doubt he demanded a trade, but I am sure he brought up the question of one. I also hope this is him walking back down off the ledge, and leading up to him signing a long term deal.

Between this, and the news of him working with Pryor, those are two positive developments in the public relationship between him and the team.

Also, in reading his quotes, basically he is saying "I'll sign when the number matches the FT or when the team lets me hit an open market and I see what number that is."

That's how the business side of the NFL works.
"This entire process from a contractual standpoint has been framed by the franchise tag rules," Cousins told Schefter. "It hasn't been framed by my market value. I would be content to go to the market and see what the value is and settle for what that is. But because of the tag rules and the team's use of the tag, that just hasn't taken place.
I am at that point too, if we over pay so be it. It's the hardest position in football to fill; if we loss him we are the Browns looking at Geno Smith as our starting QB; barf.

10000% agree! I don't care if you sign him to a $26M/yr deal and a billion dollars guaranteed. Just pay the man and get this thing going.

Honestly, to me, there isn't much wrong with that.

Not many of us would do the same job for less pay when we could go across town & make more.

I think he calmed the waters with his clarification...should make us all fell better.

Maybe, just maybe the "dysfunction" has been a little over blown after all??

Welp Espn and Mort sold us a lie...??? Think Werder and others went along with it?

the language was "appealed for a trade" on the original report...that is a trade request.

My personal opinion is he should be signed to a long term deal. Most reports out of DC have Bruce and Dan as the folks who stand against paying him. Plus there is the whole history thing with Bruce/Dan and QBs.

Im not really feeling any better when I look at all parties involved.

I've felt like that a while now. We are just an easy target and with our market size anything Washington gets views and clicks. Look what we did in FA. If we get Kirk signed long term, add a solid draft and a couple more pieces to the D in FA then this team will compete for the East again next year and contend for the NFC.

I watched Kellerman earlier totally discounting our franchise (hes a NYG fan), basically saying he was worried about Philly and Dallas in the East but we were two guaranteed wins. What a dumbass,

Can't watch the podcast at work but I'll assume it makes Kirk look good in his argument. I've been on his side for a while now, he has proven himself and deserves to be paid market rate. The Redskins really need to get their heads out of their asses and just pay him. I ain't saying overpay him and screw our cap situation but I know we have the room to pay him and still improve the team.

I think he has changed his mind due to the fact that SF has signed 2 QBs, maybe they decided he isn't worth the 2nd pick. I'm hoping we sign him soon

Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag

I wonder what numbers each side is stuck at? I have a feeling it is the Redskins that are far away from a reasonable number. Kirk proved himself while QB salaries continue to escalate. I was thinking before that $115 mil for 5 years was fair with $50 mil guaranteed. I think I will up his value to $24 mil a year for 5 years. After decades of horrendous QB play how could the Redskins let a guy who almost threw for 5,000 yards walk?

Schneed10 03-14-2017 03:33 PM

If we can't bring it up from $20M per year w low guarantees then Redskin park needs to be burned to the ground. I do think they will though, in the wee hours of July 14.

I agree and for those who just want to build up the Defense and running game, please refer to the Redskins from 2000-2010. They drafted hall of fame caliber players Champ Bailey and Chris Samuels in back to back years. Later on, Arrington, Sean Taylor, etc. They were generally stout on Defense and could run the ball well. However, they still sucked BECAUSE THEY COULDN'T SOLVE THE QUARTERBACK POSITION.

Now they have a young, productive and franchise record breaking quarterback and a top 5 Offense. Why in the world would they blow that up? Fix the 28th ranked Defense and the 21st ranked running game and leave the Offense in tact. There's plenty of money to do that even after signing Cousins to a LTD. It's not an either or situation.

Agree with you, we should sign KC. However, the other argument is that Kirk benefited from a good WR group - Reed / Djax / Garcon / Crowder, and a top 3 O-line, and a pass-happy QB friendly offense under Gruden/McVay -- all of which inflates the numbers.

SO -- if you believe the above, then you could argue that another QB may not give you the same numbers but could be serviceable, with less cap hit, especially if you think Kirk can't perform in big situations. He certainly takes some blame for losing down the stretch with the playoffs on the line.

Personally I'd take Kirk rather than gamble unnecessarily. We'll see what happens.

I thought the same when I read the report. Maybe they're floating the rumor to try to force Kirk's hand by the threat of sending him to the Browns. Both the Skins and Browns are going through some rough times right now... but staying with the Skins has to be more appealing to Kirk than going to Cleveland (I hope). I really would like to see us get a deal done to keep Kirk.

From what I've heard, Kirk's agent is chasing his first major contract and he wants to hit big with Kirk; so if it's the money that they're chasing then it may not matter that it's the Browns. The Browns have the cap space and ammo to possibly make a trade happen. The Browns have already showed their hand by letting everyone know that they don't want Osweiler. From everything that I've heard is that they plan to either release or trade him. So they still need a QB. They have two first round picks this year (1st and 12th); maybe they would be willing to give up the 12th pick along with a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

Schneed10 03-14-2017 06:43 PM

Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag

The only way the Browns consider that is if they are confident Cousins would sign a deal with them, and the only way that could happen is if the Redskins permit him to talk contract with the Browns. And the only way the Redskins do that is if Cleveland makes a real hard push in terms of trade compensation.

Lots of dominoes to fall, I don't see it. I don't think Cousins would be interested in signing there.

Kirk basically controls where he can be traded since no one will trade for him if they don't know the basic parameters of his eventual long term deal or if he flat out says he won't sign long term with them. Unless the Skins are willing to give Kirk up for peanuts, in which case maybe some team would be content to have him for one year

Kirk cleared the air, the front office wants him, so this will get done.

If Brock Osweiler comes to the Skins as part of any trade I will stop watching pro football. Can't root for another team so I'd just have to quit cold turkey.
