I was listening to Pat Kirwan walk through the changes and he shredded them. I doubt I can do his explanations justice.

The first thing I don't like is that the ball is dead in the end zone. The kickoff being a live ball even in the endzone adds a good drama to catching the ball falling short of the goal line or just into the end zone.

2nd, the kickoff team gets to start running at the kick off, the receiving team can't block until the ball is touched or touches the ground, that means the receiving team who should be lining up blocks will be running backwards full speed and have to be aware of where the ball is and if it's been caught while the kicking team is setting to blow the blockers off their feet.

Most special teams players run a 40 in under five seconds, kick off hang times are about 4-5 seconds. That means that the kicking team players will cover about 40 yards (or to the 25 yard line) before a receiving team player can legally block them. How is that going to even work?

Finally the 5 on each side rule basically will negate onside attempts which again are one of the fun elements of the kickoff.

I have no idea where this "no blocking before the ball is touched" rule comes from... this is absolutely not what the new rule is.
PFT summed it up pretty well.

-No blocking from the restraining line to 15 yards from that (so from the kicking team's 45 to the receiving team's 40, where 8 of the 11 receiving team's players must line up) before the ball is touched. IMO the point is to reduce high speed blocks.

-I don't see what's wrong with suppressing the 5 yards running start for the kick off team... doesn't change much, just reduces speed a bit.

-No wedge is smart.

-I'm pretty sure I read the rules for onside kicks would remain unchanged.

If the NFL gets rid of Kickoffs/Punts, it will cripple the game. I'm sorry this is NOT 2nd grade football, these grown ass men signed up to play and get PAID BIG MONEY for playing a game. Let's not act like they don't know the risk they are taking. Seriously they are going down a path that could end up like baseball, nobody thought the MLB would ever be 2nd or 3rd fiddle and now it is.

I really don't get the logic behind hating getting rid of the wedge and adding a 15 yards no block zone... but prefering arcade video games stuffs like a rugby scrum or a sprint for the ball... how is this more in the spirit of the game than a slightly less concussion inducing version of the kickoff?

I remember thinking in high school that kickoffs were crazy, it was fun because I didn’t know any better, but man nothing got the adrenaline pumping quite like charging full speed down the field and knocking someone on their tail

I'm all for safety and modifying the play but KEEP it in the game, don't take out ST's. Some guys that get into the league are through ST's, that's how many get their start.

Funny u mention that because my JR year I stopped playing due to a concussion suffered on a kickoff, I went to basketball after that lol. So yes I want safety of these guys but as I said it's a tradition, how odd would it be to watch a game and have no kickoff's or punts??

i find that label....... a little misleading. While it holds merit, don't get me wrong it does, it's just not as big an issue as it has been in the past due to the measure they've already taken. Without actually doing research since I'm at work, I'm assuming we see more, and more severe injuries on normal football plays, which leads me to believe that taken it away all together is just further degrading and downgrading the game's great history. i dunno. i feel like football without the kickoff isn't even real. Whats next? No punts? Teams just hail mary every time and plan to catch or defend? Sounds flimsy lol thats why I'm not on the competition committee.

Punts are far less dangerous than kickoffs, nothing is likely to change there.

If these changes to kickoffs result in a big drop in injuries I don’t think they’ll get rid of the play, but if it doesn’t expect more changes

Agree there. Just a similar look with players barreling down, catching blindside blocks etc -- a lot of the safety can fall on the players and how they play the game - but - in the heat of the moment it's hard to rely on intellect overruling instinct.

There will always be a "most dangerous play" in the game.

I am not saying don't modify it, but I am saying maybe there are other ways then just watering it down to where they ultimately get rid of it. I listen to Sirius NFL a lot, and I have not heard many announcers have any positives to say about the new rules.

It's the NFL's game to change, I am just not a fan of a few of these. Maybe they only adopt a few, and not all 7. or they try it in preseason like they did with the extra points. I would rather them do that, then just flat out change it.

Well yeah, it’s a dangerous game, but if there’s one play that’s an extreme outlier when it comes to injuries, they have a responsibility especially in this day and age to try to reduce the danger

While the rule changes are to protect the players, the bigger unspoken reason is to protect the NFL from big suits like the concussion one that NFL settled for huge money.
While the players do make a ton of money and are aware of the risks, the NFL lawyers and owners do not want to expose themselves to more lawsuits.
Players taking a 40 to 50 yard run at full speed to crash into a wedge/another player does not happen in any other play in football. So they think, why not eliminate it.
I see both sides of the argument.
In reverse an unintended increase in exposure was changing rules to promote more passing, it has resulted in exposing receivers more.

No players, just the kicker, and you kick from back of the end zone. Wherever the ball lands or the 25 yardline, whatever is closest, is where offense starts. Or you can line-up for traditional onside kick.

I forget the name of the show, it may have been Football life? about the Pats and BB...there is one scene where he is going over how to prepare the team for media questions. He was telling them what to expect and giving answers.

BB is a little bit of show with the media...he is well read and well prepared. He does somethings to get a response.

There is certainly some Parcells in the BB vs media act...but a different type of humor with BB than Parcells.

This would get the return completely out of the game, and is not in the spirit of the game... you just scored and get another opportunity for points while the kickoff is made to give the ball back to the other team!
