The only name change I'll remotely accept is to change the name to a specific tribe name, with their approval. And the tribe can help design the logo. It won't be a human depiction. It would be something historic the tribe used or an animal that represents something positive/honorable to them.

If that's not good enough for all the people whining about changing the name, then fuck them, keep the Redskins.

We should be finding positive ways to keep Native Americans represented in our country and it's part of the team history that I don't want to lose.

It would also be a way to partner with that tribe to set up a foundation that donates a certain % of profits to Native American causes. Or part of the sales proceeds from certain items. There are many food options on that front.
When the name changes there is a zero percent chance it will have anything to do with Native Americans specifically or in general. Its just not going to happen.

Then I guess I'll just hate the team name then. That'll be awesome.

I guess the woke people just want Native Americans to be known as the people that own lots of casinos. No references of any kind allowed. Are we going to be offended for them until they're erased from any national relevance? I don't get the end game.

There are plenty of ways to honor and remember people without having them as team mascots or on a bottle of maple syrup.

I'm not for or against changing the name, I really don't care what they are called. As I have said, keep the logo and colors, drop the name and just call them Washington. Or use the spear logo minus the feather and call them the Lancers. Whatever, it doesn't matter they are still the same team.

I don't think anyone at a Redskins game sings HTTR thinking they want to offend Native Americans. On the other hand I doubt anyone would go up to a Native American and say "Hello Redskin" anymore than they'd say "Hello (insert racial slur)" to an African American or Hispanic. Times change, attitudes change, and for better or worse Washington's football team's name is going to change.

In general, yes there is, but I don't think there is a better way for a professional sports team to do so.

And Redskins is not the mascot, it's the name of the team. We don't have a guy in a Native American costume jumping around on the sideline. That would be a mascot.

Why does a professional team need to honor anybody in the first place?

They don't. But we have a history of being related to Native Americans. And I would like to keep it. Way more cool than being named after let's say, a really tall person.

Just a thought, but has anyone thought to survey the people of Boston about the proposal? I mean, they named the team didn't they? ;)

Or look at it this way, I'm born in Birmingham UK. I'm not aware of anyone here protesting about Alabama. If you've been to Boston in Lincolnshire, then I think I know which version you'd prefer.:)

The name change will be just the beginning.. next they will remove the redskins from the history books .. just like the statues .. they might add asterisk in the history books but those great super bowl teams will not be referred to the redskins ..this is sad but to be honest I’m over it all anyways .. who do I apologize to for ever even pulling for such a team with a name like that ... hell we are now apologizing for the American flag for Gods sake ! The people who find this name offensive are not football fans okay .. the want to impose there will on everything.. I see the nfl completely going in tank .. you don’t think there won’t be huge potential violent protest at nfl games in these big cities .. I would not go to a stadium if given free tickets for a whole season ! It’s a damn shame .

Can’t say I am shocked. GPM was an ass hat and since that stadium is no longer used or even leased by the Redskins no big surprise. If they move back to DC do you guys think there will be provisions preventing GPM’s name likeness? Especially if the use federal land?

Adrian Peterson speaks on this issue ....

https://www.hogshaven.com/2020/6/20/21297740/adrian-peterson-talks-about-removing-the-george-preston-marshall

Changing the Redskins name:

"We hear the chatter about it, but it’s not something that we address as a team. For the past three years that I've been there, we've had the Native Americans come in and have a day just for them to come in and tour the facility and do everything. It's always good to interact with those people, and to show those people love as well.

For me, my take on it is that I like to look at things at all angles. So I understand how people view it and say ‘You know what, it’s racist.’ And then on the flip side, I also look at it and, say for me it’s truth in plain sight.

You’ve got the capital of the United States, and the NFL team there is the Washington Redskins. It’s way deeper than I think a lot of people view it. I look at it in the light, and understand that people are offended by it, and I look at it in the light and say ‘You know what, I can see where you can, this is your team, this is your state, this is your country.’ How you can find pride in that as well.

I look at it, and I can understand so many people's views. That's why I'm able to just agree or disagree when it comes to looking at both sides."

Uhhhh ..... wut?

Since most of us on here are pretty diehard Redskins fans, I'd like to see the results of a poll from us if the Redskins were to change their name. For example, if they did change the name:
I'm good with it, still going to pull for them no matter what
I'm good with it as long as it still represents Native Americans in some way, otherwise I'm out
I'm good with it as long as they keep the same helmets and colors, otherwise I'm out
I'm good with it as long as they keep the same colors, otherwise I'm out
Totally against it, but would still pull for the team
Totally against it, and would probably change teams

If we were forced to change it, I'd go with the Washington Hogs.

Washington Warriors would be my second choice.

What Daniel Snyder SHOULD do as a good PR move is refocus on OAF: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Redskins_Original_Americans_Foundation

Unfortunately, they messed up with that name too because an oaf is defined as a "a stupid, uncultured, or clumsy person."

Well this might turn up the heat on Snyder a bit, assuming those companies try to force the issue of course.

At this stage in the game, absent the west coast tribes that use the names for their high school teams/etc. getting vocal in their support of the squad, I'm already mentally preparing for it to happen sometime in my lifetime. Just hope the new name isn't some dumb shit like the Wizards.

IF they do change the name I would keep everything the same (colors etc . Even the logo ( unless people find looking at a Indian offensive) I would CHANGE the name to WASHINGTON NATIVE AMERICANS and would keep rolling .. how long before people think that name is rascist? The teams whole identity is Based around the American Indian If you lose that you might as well pull for another team ..

Washington Native Americans

This is now my favorite idea if they change the name.

Someone above this said the Braves. That's my favorite baseball team also, I like that idea too.

He has already tried that approach, ad nauseum. I think it's past the point when that will still work for him. Dan Snyder should stop resisting the change and do what's right. I think most people's thoughts and feelings have evolved on this type of issue. it's now time to change the name to something that should offend practically no one.

The name "Heroes" comes to my mind. And, Dan, if you use my idea, don't be too specific about who those heroes might be. Let each fan think of his or her own heroes when they see or hear the team name. See, it works for everyone.
