Yeah that is where I'm at to.. If AR15 is there at our pick it would be hard to pass up on that kid.

He's a legit Josh Allen type QB

Re: Sam howell takes Down Dallas postgame
With Howell it is not just the arm, his ball placement is light years ahead of Heinicke and Wentz, that allowed Terry and Jahan to run after the catch, also contributed to a couple of the drops as they were getting a little to eager to head upfield knowing the ball was going to arrive when it was supposed to. Directly contributed to Terrys touchdown. Still cant fathom how you start a rookie QB to "take a look" in a meaningless game and only have him pass the ball 19 times. A couple of PI should also be added to the evaluation of his completion/yardage stats
Yeah the 19 passes while taking a look was really just another wtf move by this staff. Turner really has no business being employed in the NFL. That deep ball to Terry would have been either hanging up in the air or tailed towards the sideline if noodle arm threw it. His decisions to run when he did - i saw a few of them because I wound up in front of a tv were super encouraging. A mobile quarterback is so refreshing. Wentz can’t run and Taylor just chose not to. He kept drives alive more than once. His awareness and ability to see the field were superb for his first start. He will be our starter next year and we can address all our other problems in FA and the draft. Idk how he ultimately will pan out, but I feel a hell of alot better going into next year than I did this one.
I hope so but odds are against him. Nobody drafted after 5th has gone on to be a quality starter over the last two decades so I’d prefer to think of my self as pragmatic. Also calling him a short Daniel Jones isn’t negative, If he could give us Daniel Jones production I could live with that and we can build a team around it, but I need to see more before I think he is a starter. I thought 19 passes and run heavy is the way you set him up for success (very similar to Jones).

Loved arm strength, he had an good touch on the ball, and his tucking and running but a few under thrown balls and few others into double and triple coverage, hope that is just first game jitters and not his game IQ.
Just a side note , i really don't understand why folks get wrapped around the axel on what someone was drafted. I can understand the day of the draft but being picked first round doesn't magically make you great. Teams tend to give more rope to a high draft pick because they spent so much draft capital on them.

It just grinds my gears when i hear oh X team got former first round pick from Y team. Great team Y probably drafted poorly and now they are unloading that player.

Some folks act like if a player was a first round pick they wear some magical shirt under their uniform but instead of a giant S it has a giant 1.

Where SH was drafted has zero to do with his abilities today.

If the only two other girls that looked at me that year were the equivalent of Carson and Taylor as quarterbacks than hell yes I got excited when she did. Lol.

The whole key to yesterdays game was how would Howell look. Would he shit the bed or would he make the most of his opportunity. I think he certainly made the most of his opportunity. Showcased his arm, his legs, and his composure. Not sure what else he could have done. Nobody is saying not to do your due diligence as far as quarterback competition in the off season. Nobody is saying we are set for the next 15 years. But he clearly showed us he “could” be the guy. He clearly showed us he is most likely better than what we had. He seems like the type of guy that will go earn that starting job and has both the tangible and intangibles to do it. We haven’t had a decent quarterback outside Cousins in years. Of course we are day dreaming after yesterday.

Honetsly Howell played better than most of us imagined. Against the Starters from a top 10 defense all season long. He had 2 Tds 1 Int. No fumbles. I'll take that

OH AND HE BEAT DALLAS!!

Re: Sam howell takes Down Dallas postgame

So we have watched Taylor for several years and cringed every time he threw the ball ...Wentz was never gonna work out .. he is DONE !
Howell steps in against Dallas and plays well .. He showed more Arm talent in one game against Dallas than Taylor did in two seasons .. Yes Taylor played with Moxie and made some plays now and then but it always seemed that it was luck involved.. I would like to see Howell given the same opportunity that Taylor has .. in the end I believe Howell will be Legit ..

Re: Sam Howell takes Down Dallas postgame

Shouldn’t we be looking at a QB’s long-term prospects in the context of coaching in all of its forms — position skill development, installing an offense that fits his skills, OL protection, scheme and personnel continuity, minimizing controversies, etc? Very few college kids arrive in the NFL fully-formed, especially on offense, especially QB’s.

We don’t have a good GM or coaching staff, especially offense. And we’re so used to that, that we demand our draft picks (all players, really) to be “it,” to turn us around, or we trash them. Good organizations win by getting the most out of their players over time, not by hitting the lottery on a handful of picks or FA’s.

It can take a couple of seasons (many if you’re Geno Smith lol) to know what you have in a QB. But you’ll never really know in a shitty organization. Does SH have the composure, arm strength, and playmaking instinct to make it as a starter on a playoff team? I think that’s a solid maybe. But it all depends on getting the organization functioning at a higher level. If we don’t, it’ll just be more of the same — grasping for new shiny objects and trashing them when “they” don’t work out.

Sure, let’s draft a QB in a reasonable spot, — let’s always draft a QB. But let’s focus on OL, LB, TE, and most of all let’s pray for a new owner, new GM, and new coaching staff. That’s what’s standing in the way of success, not so much the players.

We are also so QB starved that when we see a rookie beat Dallas with no oline, a fourth and third string RB, and Scott fucking Turner calling the plays we immediately think there is no way he can be the guy. We can either be optimistic and believe we finally have a capable quarterback or we can be pessimistic and believe that he will never pan out in the long run. Yes it is an extremely small sample size but based on what I saw I will remain optimistic until I have a reason not to be. Like HTTR said the plan should be get this guy an oline and an OC and work with it at this point. Of course if we stumble upon something better we take it but as of today quarterback 1 is a little less of an issue than it was 24 hours ago.

i say SH is piece at this point to the QB puzzle. meaning i wouldn't throw him out nor would i say we solved the puzzle.

I really like to see us get a QB in this deep draft.

Its just so obvious in this league you need a QB and then start building around him

Sam Howell looked fine to me yesterday. I think you develop your own, get a better OC, and rebuild that offensive line. Howell has weapons around him. No need to go out and get anymore retreads.

I like the way you said that. Whether Howell is a starter or back up remains to be seen but he should get an opportunity to vie for the starter position in the offseason.

We have been down this road before on this board as I recall when Taylor played well against Tampa in the playoffs.

Nice to see the boys end the season on a bitter sweet win.

Dallas looked broken and not ready to play. Despite playing their starters, dem boys checked out of the regular season last week.

Howell - had 2 nice outside-the-numbers down field connections to Dotson, ball thrown with anticipation and accuracy.

Hes the backup for next year ... and will probably play more snaps than the named week 1 starter next year (who ever that is)

8-8-1 .... just about the worst finish we could have hoped for pre season.

Disagree. My eyes tell me otherwise, he was handcuffed by Turner. With over 9 minutes left in the game all they did was run, if Turner would have let him play he would have shown more. What didn't you see that you liked? On his TD run he evaded 3 or 4 Dallas defensemen, threw beautiful passes and made one mistake. It would be a waste of caps space money to get a FA. Sign TH for $10/mil a year, if not possible find a Brissett type FA.

That is different than reaching early or paying a Carr. I have no problem with selecting a quarterback at some point if there is a guy we like. T Rich is probably the only guy that falls to 16 as far as first rounders go. If we select him and let the two guys battle it out in camp it isn’t the worst thing in the world BUT it is going to be really hard to rebuild the line if we do that. My guy says grab oline in the first and run with Howell. Taylor wants to stay on for backup money cool. Should not be hard to find a backup in free agency if not. My gut tells me Sam is the guy and I hope we don’t “throw him out” or let him rot on the bench before he goes on to better things else where and we once again had the guy until we didn’t.

I just keep thinking imagine what we saw yesterday but with a better team around him? He isn’t going to lose his arm strength or his mobility. He has all that and it’s invaluable. It is what we wanted all year - Carson couldn’t move. Taylor had a noodle arm. Sam has a gun and wheels. Build around it. I tend to agree that the coaches failed in the evaluation of giving him game reps to see his progression from earlier in the season, but looking at games and scores it is hard to see where the staff would've felt comfortable putting him in tio get those based on how close the scores were, maybe in the Texans game?

Again nothing i saw was bad, just saying its one game and don't go in the off season thinking you solved the biggest puzzle. For example the year we passed on Herbert/Tau because we were all set with Haskins ( i realize no one here thought Haskin was the answer but the bone heads at Redskins Park sure did).

Food for thought. Was letting him sit and better understand the position not part of his development? It's not like they kept him in the broom closet.

Look at Rogers career look at Brady's career both sat and learned too start.

Rodgers was playing behind a hall of famer and Brady got his first start because Bledsoe got injured. Little different than trotting out Carson Wentz and Taylor Heinekie for five games when it was obvious neither one was getting the job done and we literally needed one or two wins to get in the playoffs. I totally agree he learned by sitting but I think it is safe to say he was a better option and had enough learning under his belt a mere month ago.

What I am saying is bring him in the last couple of drives to see how he handles in game and not just practice reps. Even if it is calling plays and handoffs with a pass on third down it helps provide insight and gives them an additional evaluation tool. Shouldn't that be part of development too?

this isn't high school football, the starters want their PT and you got keep your QB1 happy.

We don't have a Brady/ Rogers that you could sit and they be fine with it in a blow out. You sit anyone this year on our team at QB1 and you would rattle their confidence; its because every QB on our team was constantly looking over their shoulder and rightly fully so because none of the 3 were QB1 material in this season.

Regardless why they sat, it helped their development. Back in the day rookie QBs always sat for a year or two.

I willing to bet many prospects over the years could have flourished much better if they had the luxury of sitting and easing into the role.

The confidence of being the starting QB.

IMO we are splitting hairs a few reps in a meaningless blow out was never going to speed the development of SH and to your point getting yanked for a few reps in a meaningless blow out was never going to rattle TH/CW.

Point is moot.

I think a lot of fans are underestimating Snyder's meddling of the team, and how much that has shit on the coaching staff (past and present). Let's take a look at the QBs Snyder has forced the team to get:

Wentz
Haskins
Alex Smith (love the guy, but still)
RG3

That's several years of wasted picks, money, development, effort, etc., etc. Not to justify or be an apologist for the current coaching staff, but I think people tend to forget that our horrible owner still meddles with football matters.

And I think going forward with Howell is best for everyone. I don't want the current team administration to mortgage the future in trading for a QB, when they could be potentially out in 2024. You can use the offseason to get Howell to be the #1 guy and just fix the o-line.

Yep, as simple as that. The team has weapons all around that have not been exploited. if anything and I hate to say this, trade Samuel if you can get a 3rd rounder and put Brown as his replacement who is very familiar with Howell.

Here is thought what if you bundle SH and some draft picks to move up for one of the top picks in this years draft? Would you pull that trigger?
Well I have been calling for Howell for weeks along with others including SF the president of his fan club. So not hindsight. And I don’t remember anyone saying Carson is the guy. Lol.

Didn’t Dallas have a chance to win the division? If they were conceding to the Eagles I find it hard to believe they would have started everyone. We surprised them and kicked their asses.

Depends what you mean by draft picks. Im not sold on anyone coming out this year.
Howell was projected as a first rounder for alot of his time in college. He was a little off senior year. Maybe a little gun shy thinking he didn’t want to get injured and ruin his shot? He played for UNC so what was the best thing he had to play for an ACC coastal division championship shot at Clemson? I think teams were a little afraid of his height at 6-1. That is dumb. Howell was an absolute steal in the fifth round. Im not giving up serious picks and an unknown for another unknown. At least I saw Howell play an NFL game and look extremely solid. So no im not pulling that trigger. Not for someone who isn’t a Trevor Lawrence. And there is no Trevor Lawrence coming out.
The confidence of being the starting QB.

IMO we are splitting hairs a few reps in a meaningless blow out was never going to speed the development of SH and to your point getting yanked for a few reps in a meaningless blow out was never going to rattle TH/CW.

Point is moot.

I think a lot of times folks like to think of scenarios to further shit on this coaching staff. Not that i think they are great but at some point we are just pissing on dead horses.
It was about evaluating him not developing him. It was one more tool they could have used that is all. If the coaching staff was worried about the confidence of our backup QB not being able to fulfill his duties because Sam Howell got a few reps I don't know what to say about that.
Yep, as simple as that. The team has weapons all around that have not been exploited. if anything and I hate to say this, trade Samuel if you can get a 3rd rounder and put Brown as his replacement who is very familiar with Howell.
Either that or trade brown, we spent a 3rd rounder on him and he is being kept from the starting lineup by the guys in front. Only have 2 more years under his rookie contract to see if he deserves a new one. They could flat out cut Samuel and save a chunk of capspace, if Turner leaves I am not sure Samuel as curently used has a place in a new offence, certainly wouldn't replace either of the outside guys.
