Re: Do you support Gibbs' decision to start Brunell? (Merged)
That is something that's puzzling to me as well.
I don't think it is bigger Ramsey fans than Gibbs more so, than it is just alot of our opinions that is was a bad choice or decision given the timing, the circumstances to yank him after the injury as an excuse not to go back to him after a quarter of play this year. Ramsey should have had a longer string this year and i think everyone can agree that it was not a fair or accurate choice. You don't pull your staring QB and then make the statement I am waiting for a QB to step forward and establish himself. Say Brunell throws and int and throws for 120 yds and we lose does he go back to ramsey due to Brunell did not establish himself highly unlikely. |

i think above all else we are fans of winning, and Ramsey won more last season *in spite* of Gibbs decision to maintain Brunell. if Brunell was really injured, it just makes the decision even more baffling. i think for the most part we all love Gibbs, we're just waiting for the rust to come off and the good instincts to come back. |

As you said, I don't favor Ramsey over Gibbs. That's a silly comparison to make. I favor winning - something we've had very little of in the past 10 seasons or so. And, I don't think Gibbs' decision will help us to win. My feelings are not personal towards Ramsey, Brunell or Gibbs. I just want us to win. Brunell proved to me last year that he can't get us there. Ramsey is still a question mark for me because, under Gibbs, he has not been given a chance to prove himself one way or the other. I want him to be given that chance and that means being allowed to play, in the regular season, for a lot longer than 1/3 of a game. |
Re: Do you support Gibbs' decision to start Brunell? (Merged)
The answer is yes, I support Gibbs in making this decision that he is paid to make - because I am a fan of the Skins. This has to be put in perspective. Gibbs is not benching the clear-cut best QB to give an obviously inferior QB the start. Choosing which of the two QBs gives us the best chance to win is all subjective, and I'm inclined to support Gibbs when he uses his gray matter to make a football decision involving gray areas.
Am I surprised at the decision. Yes, a little bit - since Gibbs had publicly named Ramsey the starter and I felt that we needed consistency at the position. However, as has been noted or eluded to in other threads for quite some time, you didn't have to be a close observer to notice that Gibbs didn't seem all that enthralled with Ramsey. This year's #1 pick should have been the writing on the wall. I think the real issue here is that Redskin's fans love Joe Gibbs and want to see him succeed as much as they want to see the Redskins succeed. Fans are afraid that he's making a bad decision and don't want him to further tarnish his football reputation in his second stint. I say we treat Gibbs as any other coach at any other time, with any other team. He's responsible for his decisions and actions ultimately. If this move turns out to be the right move, this will all blow away. If we have a terrible season and Jason Campbell isn't ready to come in next year, Gibbs will have deserved the blame. But for now, let's let him do what he's paid to do without so much moaning and whining. |
Re: Do you support Gibbs' decision to start Brunell? (Merged)
With our limited knowledge of what happens in the team meetings, practices, and locker room, it's difficult to make a judgement of Gibbs's decision. From my perspective, I initially thought continueing with Ramsey as the starter BUT keeping him on a short leash for the next two or three games would reduce controversy and show fairness. But in retrospect, I really can't doubt Gibbs's judgement on these things. He's made these kind of decisions before and, although he is only human, I'm inclined to trust him more than some sportswriter or even a critical fan. I do wish Ramsey the best, but I also realize he hasn't done anything to deserve keeping his job as a starter(and I don't blame him for wanting to be traded either). :httr:

Re: Do you support Gibbs' decision to start Brunell?
I noticed an interesting comment from Coach Gibbs while I was just watching his press comferance where he made the anouncement on Redskins.com TV. He said he looked to the past to take notes from and he talked about Mark Rypien being on the IR for 2 years, then get his chance to play and throwing 9 interceptions in 8 games. He said they kept trying to get it across to Ryp not to allow so many turn overs and they worked with him in drills and such. But the biggest thing Joe Gibbs thought got across to Rypien was this... he sat Rypien and let some one else be the starter. He said Rypien learned from that experience and the next time he was prepared to take the reigns and be the starter. You all know what happened then. SUPERBOWL MVP, BABY, YEAH!! "I'M GOING TO DISNEY WORLD, WHOOOO!!"
:D
JK, you seemingly have glossed over the most glaring part of that statement, and it's 2 word's EIGHT GAMES! Not 19 minutes, and just for the record Ramsey will be much better than Ryp ever was if given a fair chance. |

I said it, last year I wasn't calling for Brunell's removal. I had faith that Gibbs knew what he was doing...I still do. He can't turn a team around in just one year...well, maybe he did when he first came in. But we must all have patience. |
A very reluctant yes from me. This whole season rests on our defense now. If we go down by more than 10-12 points, we're toast.
Ditto. Watching the game Sunday, you saw the defense compress. When Brunell came in the defense, from the line of scrimmage to the defense's deep man averaged about 15 yards. With Ramsey it was about 25. That said - turnovers are killers and PR (whom I have always supported) is a turnover machine. |
Fact of the matter is Ramsey is not read yet! He just may need more time!!! We have a better chance of winning with Brunell then Ramsey. Monday night in Dallas Ramsey would have little chance of getting the job done. I am not saying that Brunell will do that much better but he has been in games at the other guys home under fire. I just have this feeling that Brunell can pull this off with a week with the first O!
No on can argue with Brunells track record, he is a proven All Pro NFL QB but ... Patrick was beginning to settle down he was moving the ball an completing passes downfield he was coming around. Its a shame that no one wants to admit that Gibbs just wants Brunell, thats his guy. I dont care if Montana and Marino were on the team he would still find a reason to start Brunell. Lets just get ready for a season field goals. |

Ramseys problem is confidence he has none an he will have none as long as he doesn't feel the support of Gibbs. He has got the tools and the only way he improves at this stage is to play not watch until he is 32 years old. Think about Troy Aikmans first few years, Joe Montana, Jim Plunkett the list goes on.
And Ramsey could be our Theisman, what you have to understand about Williams is this, his job was not to lose the game, where as Theisman, Rypien were out to win it, as Ramsey has been trying to do, unlike Brunell.
Pre-season is meaningless in this case, as if I can't figure out that Brunell had seasoned veterans [ala McCants] in going against a second and third string defenses, can we give Ramsey a chance to get caught up with game speed at least? I hope Gibbs treats Brunell equally with Ramsey which means Ramsey will be in the dallas game by the second quarter. Brunell and his pre-season I have to laugh, didn't anyone watch this clown during the regular season last year? How bout giving Ramsey a chance to get acclamated to his new recieving corps at game speed before we give him the hook. My thought is they think we now will have a running game and Brunell will just basically do whats neccasary to convert a third down here and there, boy are some people in for a rude awakening when we can't run the ball because of Brunells inability to play QB, my prediction is Portis will begin the uprise for Ramsey because he isn't going to remain silent while his carreer stats go down the tubes because Gibbs is in love with Brunell for a second year in a row.
First Off I wish that Ramsey would get his act together and be what we all hoped he can be! Now I was the first to say no last year to Brunell. His arm looed weak and he looked bad along with out of shape. There was also something wrong with him. This year he looks in better shape and arm looks stronger. Does this mean all now will be well? No but we have a better chance with a Brunell theny with a Ramsey that is just not ready! As for Portis I would like to see our QBs throw to him more and let him run in the open field. We are missing something big from him that could go along way to making this O much better! What I find funny is that Gibbs is in love with this guy or that guy. He is good man that is looking out for what is best for the Redskins. If Ramsey was getting it done he would be the guy! As for your prediction we better hope Brunell dose get the job done because ramsey is just not ready and that is the cold hard fact! |
Yes.
I am amazed that some on this board are bigger Ramsey fans than they Redskins or Joe Gibbs fans.
What have the Redskins done over the past ten years to merit any sort of the benefit of the doubt? Thank God for the Nationals, there is finally some added sports competition in this town and it is not going be Redskins only. I have been a fan of the team for a long time but I am sick of the non-stop boneheaded decision making of the front office with regards to contracts and player personnel. In Michael Wilbon's column today he states that we spent three picks for Campbell, a first, third, and a fourth. For most teams with good evaluators of player personnel that is three starters. Just think Kyle Orton, who looked pretty damn good was a fourth round pick. Not knocking Cambell, but if we have spent so much on him, and if Ramsey is not the answer, then in my opinion neither is Brunell, put the rookie out there and see what he can do. Also Gibbs deserves a lot of criticism for his handling of this, he does not get an automatic pass because of his prior history. In his own words when he came back he said the past is just that, the past. As a fan of the team I would love to be proved wrong, but I have not seen anything out of Brunell to make me think he is going to get this team to the next level. The Brunell of five years, no contest, that player is head and shoulders above Ramsey, the Mark Brunell of now and last year, I don't think so. And let's be honest Gibbs must not have either, for why did he go with Patrick to start the season? |
Re: Do you support Gibbs' decision to start Brunell? (Merged)
Personally I'm willing to give Gibbs the benefit of the doubt for now.
I'm also willing to give Brunell a 2nd shot in an improved offensive system. All in all a huge roll of the dice by Gibbs. A roll of the dice that a lot of coaches wouldn't make. Time will tell if his instincts are correct, or if this move was just dumb. Either way I don't think we have a lot to lose. Ramsey was shaky at best, Brunell may have stunk last year, but this is a new season and the jury is still out as to whether he can get it done or not. |

YES, but all this debate shows that the fans on this site, and coach gibbs have one thing in common. We will do anything to beat DALLAS this monday night he does not want to be embarassed. Been waiting for that magic Ramsey game for four years now.. Not since the Titans victory when he first appeared. this is not lights out for Ramsey yet. calm down he will have another chance to be the hero when Brunnell's crap gets old, cold , and stale then that will be his last chance. a little time on the bench should teach you about brain farts.
I've asked this a few times but I don't think I've seen a clear answer.
What exactly has Ramsey done to deserve to be the unquestioned starter?? Why are people soooo emotionally attached to this guy?? It has to be an emotional attachment, that's the only way I can see why people are so supportive of a QB who's been so inconsistent. It has to be an emotional attachment when people are so eager to overlook his interceptions and inconsistent play. I don't get it. Ramsey doesn't look like the answer right now, and in all likelihood Brunell is just a stopgap until Campbell is hopefully ready to take the job next year. But people are acting like we're benching Manning or Favre. We're benching a young QB who hasn't proven anything except that he's still an inconsistent QB that makes too many mental errors.
I've though the very same thing about many Gibbs-loyalists. Granted, the difference between Gibbs and Ramsey is night and day; Ramsey hasn't done squat while Gibbs essentially built the franchise. I undoubtedly think Gibbs is great and has done more for this team than anyone else in the history of the franchise. However, I am not, nor will I ever be, the type to drink the Kool-Aid and blindly follow someone no matter who they are or how great I think they are. I truly think that despite what we saw of Brunell all last season, people are drinking the Kool-Aid and are placing too much trust in Gibbs. Yeah, for me it is emotional. Anyone who claims to be unemotional about the Redskins is either 1). a liar, 2). not thinking this talk of being "emotional" through, or 3). maybe doesn't have the same feelings about the Redskins that I have. I love my Skins. I love the Redskins more than just about anything else (my girlfriend and soon-to-be fiance tops them). I get passionate about the Redskins. I like Ramsey not for who he is, but for what I think he could do for this franchise if given AN ENTIRE season and a teaspoon of confidence. Trust me, if I thought Ramsey would kill our team, I'd be putting a bounty on his head. So yeah, I'm emotion in support of Ramsey, because I think Ramsey's the best we've got and I'd like to see a few wins. PS- Matty, I'm also trying to pin down your position. In some posts you seem to say that the Brunell-Ramsey debate isn't clear cut and in other posts you seem to say that it was a no brainer and Brunell was definately the way to go. Would you care to clarify your statements/opinions? |
Re: Do you support Gibbs' decision to start Brunell? (Merged)
Don't confuse the questioning of Joe's decision with everyone being emotionally attached to Ramsey. My biggest concern is how unsettled things are at the QB position. I do think Ramsey gives us the best chance to win. I also think that Brunell has shown me nothing to justify giving him the starter's job. In fact, just the opposite, he's shown me a lot of reasons why he should not have the job. And, finally, Campbell is nothing but a big question mark right now.
Forgive me for being just a tad bit troubled with this scenario. |

I would also add that just because those who disagree with the decision to bench Ramsey doesn't mean they believe he is the reincarnation of Johnny Unitas. The reaction we're seeing among many fans is simply the disapproval of the quarterback who replaces him. For the record, I don't think it matters which QB starts against the Cowboys on Monday night, or for the forseeable future. We simply do not have a quarterback that can lead any team to playoff contention. And I think Gibbs only has the choice between a guy who can occasionally make big plays, but still makes horrible decisions in Patrick Ramsey, or a guy who's most redeeming value right now seems to be that he's less likely to turn the ball over in Mark Brunell. Count me in the category which recognizes that Gibbs made the judgement to start the player he thinks gives the team their best chance to win. While I'm somewhat skeptical that Brunell is that player, I base that opinion on his results last year, and his preseason production this year against second and third team opponents. |
Re: Do you support Gibbs' decision to start Brunell? (Merged)
As important as a good QB is, I think Gibbs just wants some consistancy in the team. So what ever gets that going I support. Besides maybe Brunnell still has some left now that he has healed.

Let's just throw this out there..
Ramsey starts the game 1 for 4 for 4 yds, INT... he then goes 5 for 7 for 101 yards (not bad AT ALL!) BUT... if the bogus penalty on Cooley wasn't called it becomes 6 for 8 for 107 yds, TD. AND don't forget Portis drops a VERY catchable ball in there that would have been a 7 yarder which would have made him .... 7 for 8 for 114yds, TD after his first 4 attempts. I'd say that's damn good for ANY quarterback in the NFL in their first REAL action of the season after getting warmed-up (first 4 attempts). Also let's DEFINITELY not forget the Brunell threw an INT into Vasher's hands as well, only his was called back due to penalty. So basically, Ramsey has a TD called back, and Brunell has a pick called back... This is nuts. It even looked like Patrick was starting to look comfortable out there for once. It is VERY clear from watching the 2 play that you have 2 basic options. You can go with the Favre-type QB in the sense that he can and will get big chunks of yards on some plays yet throw a few INTs as well, or a guy who can only be ULTRA--ULTRA CONSERVATIVE throwing slants and WR screens but not many INTs. We proved last year that you HAVE to TRY and go downfield to help the running game and to score FREAKING TOUCHDOWNS to win games!! Remember that if we would have scored on average 21 points per game last year (which is less than the 6-10 panthers scored) we'd have been 11-5!!! Can Brunell lead this team to the Super Bowl?? NO. Let Ramsey PROVE... I mean REALLY prove his isn't the future... |
Honestly Matty, I don't think it's as much an endorsement for Ramsey as it is a slight against Brunell. Those 9 games last year were maybe the most painful games I've had to witness as a skins fan as far as our offense goes. I just don't want to see a repeat of that offense again. I know things are different with our offense this year, but let me turn the question back around: "What exactly has Brunell done to deserve to be the unquestioned starter??"
Did somehow completing less than half of his throws and gaining 5 yards per attempt last year win him the starting job? Did the fact that he went right back to that 5 yard per attempt average last week do it? If you compare the numbers of what the two have done in the same system, it's not even close.
I'll go even further and ask this. Aside from zone blocking, what was the basis of the "revamped" offense the staff worked so hard on this winter? Throwing the deep ball. Neither of these guys are great, but Roy Williams is going to be a lot closer to the line of scrimmage this Monday and we all no why. When our "starting " QB throws for 70 yds. in 3 quarters, what defense/coordinator is going to respect the Washington Redskins passing game. |

I'm hoping brunell can prove he can keep the dbs deep enough for portis to break something. I do agree that game could have turned out better easily, and the refs weren't that great, but bad calls are a reality for us. |
