Re: Lavar on 980 @ 4pm
I'm curious as to what prompts this certainty? Maybe I'm just out of the loop here, (and I know I haven't seen him in practice or anything) but has LA really done anything that we, you or anyone else knows of to merit being benched no matter what his capabilities are? We're not even talking about realizing potential, we're talking about a perrinial pro-bowler, who has been the leader of our Defense and the Face of the Team...probably the best OLB in the league today.

Everyone talks about him freelancing, but what the hell man, back a couple of years ago, someone had to go make a f'ing tackle. God knows even with Trotter, Armstead, Wilkinson, Stubblefield, Bailey, Gardner, Lang.... we sucked on Defense and he came up with big plays when we needed him to.

I refuse to believe that its beyond him to comprehend or physically preform what is asked of him. ST (even though I love the guy) can't even say his goddamn alphabet, and LA is a chess player.

I'd like to think that it only has to do with him not being able to put in the time in the offseason and its only a matter of time before he works his way back into the lineup. Everyones making it out to be a personal thing, but he has never let anything contractual come in the way of his playing/practicing, and he seems to have an all class attitude no matter what comes his way. (True Redskin Behavior?) He was excited about being signed for the rest of his career to this city when we were a joke of a franchise and other players were crawling their way out.

GW didn't start Taylor at the beginning of last season because he missed time in the offseason, even though Taylor looked like a super-stud in the preseason. I'm seriously hoping its the same type situation and that he gets the chance to earn his job back and does so soon.
Amen. He at least deserves an explanation. I hope he is just being worked in.

Re: Rumors

There are two sides to every story..... We don't know what is going on. I heard that because of Lavar's injury he did not participate in training camp which might have an influence on his playing during the season. Lavar is one of my fav players but whatever is going on with him and the Redskins organization has got to be worked out soon. I really hope they are not looking to trade him in the offseason, there is not much of a point.

Re: Lavar on 980 @ 4pm
If he honestly has no clue why he is not on the feild, and he dosent go up to a coach and ask "Coach, what do I have to do to play more." Then its just as much on him as the coach.
I guess that's true, the coaches don't really owe the players anything. I wonder if there's a lack of communication there on both sides, and if so, why they can't get it resolved.

We're probably just being impatient, but I hope that the organization doesn't lose sight of his value. If we can afford to keep him I'd love to have a guy who wants to be here around if we do start a new winning tradition here.

As for Lavar starting or not....whatever Williams thinks, I'll go a long with him. He knows a lot more than I do so I trust he'll make the right decision...

Re: Rumors

Does anyone seriously think that LaVar is going to change his style of play? This is the same guy who drove Paterno nuts with his freelancing and, surprise, he does the same thing in the pros. The NFL is not like the NBA, one great ATHLETE cannot just go and do their thing and be successful. They must play within the scheme. LaVar is probably my favorite player on the team, but he's not the team. If he's unable to do what he needs to to get on the field, why not trade him? I just think that time is getting short for #56 to show that he can just accept a role and adhere to a scheme.

Re: Rumors
So your saying Lavar free lances too much, and Sean Taylor doesn't? Don't agree. Sean and Lavar are very similar. Lavar is a team first guy and will do whatever the coaches tell him. Both are game changers. I just don't buy the freelancing argument.
Dude what are you talking about? Sean Taylor doesn't freelance at all. When people say Lavar is freelancing and not playing to the scheme, they mean that he will sometimes abandon the gap he's responsible for, abandon the lineman he's supposed to push back, or even abandon the receiver he's supposed to cover on occasion, all with the goal in mind of chasing the ball. In other words, he can't always be depended upon to hold containment. Sometimes the LB's job is to take on the pulling G or C and push him back at the point of attack so that others can swarm to the ball. Lavar just likes to chase the ball. He's like a labrador retriever on a tennis court. That's how the big plays happen, both for us and against us. Big plays and turnovers are key, but playing D as a team has to come first.

Sean Taylor does none of this. First off, his responsibilities are much different at safety. His first priority is to cover the deep ball. After that, he covers receivers as called by the defensive package. I've never seen Taylor flat out abandon those responsibilities. He has bitten on a few play fakes (Dallas last year, the Dallas flea flicker this year), but he doesn't leave one receiver to try to run across the field and jump somebody else's route. When there's a handoff, the job of the free safety is swarm to the ball. Nothing else. Taylor isn't there to keep containment like a LB is supposed to. He's supposed to just go lay wood. That's his job, and he does it quite well. Arrington ignores some of his responsibilities.

Schneed10 10-04-2005 10:43 PM

Re: Rumors

And if he were a team first guy, he'd be willing to take on a kickout block and turn a RB back into the center of the defense instead of chasing the RB to the outside and letting him get the edge. He wants to make every tackle himself. It shouldn't matter who makes the tackle, if he turns a RB back into the center of the defense, and Lemar Marshall makes the tackle, Arrington should be happy. But that's not what he does.

Re: Rumors

Lets be serious and really think about this ladies and gentlemen.
Lets look back last season:
Redskins owner Daniel Snyder threatened Coles when the receiver's refusal to accept the trade without a contract extension thwarted the deal. "He said that if I stayed in Washington, he would turn me into another Terry Glenn," Coles said."He said he would send a flat-screen television to my home because I'd be better off watching the games there. That was his way of saying I'd be sitting for the next couple years until they cut me."

Arrington has an ugly dispute with the team over some money missing from his contract, he then goes and speak to the media during the offseason bad mouthing the team because of how they were treating his injury. Don't you think Snyder would be a tad bit pissed?

Ok ur probally saying, "Arrington and the team settled" "it's all good, right?" Wrong!! What is the best way Snyder can keep Arrington from getting his money? Keep him off the field! I know u all heard of the 70% snaps clause. The one that killed Winslows contract, yeah that one where u must be on the field 70% of the time to get a certaint amount of money. Well if it's in Lavar contract it doesn't look like he'll get it. Snyder will make his life hell as a Redskin. Maybe what Coles said was true, cause it seems to me that he is carrying it out on Lavar.

Arrington

I am absolutely preplexed by all the miscommunication being sent out by both the skins and Arrigton. I understand the principle of "packages", but out 130 defensive snaps the last two weeks, am I to believe that Arrington could only be in 5% of all the packages called? This is silly for anyone to believe as a real reason as to why he is not playing. Marshall and Washington from my take were probably in for 95% of the plays. Is there "play Arrington package" and the 95 others?

I saw the interview with Buges yesterday, and he came closest to stating some believable facts.

So what are the facts??? IMHO, I believe the skins realized that they don't need $11+M tied to one player, when that player is replaceable by a system. Secondly, I think what makes arrington so attractive to alot of teams is also the reason why he is not attractive to Williams/Lindsay. Arrington likes to do "his thing" instead of that of "system thing". He had problems with Marvin Williams and now he is having problems with another defensive master, who are all about the system not the individual. Thirdly, I don't think the skins like Arrington pointing fingers in the preseason about the skins playing him when he was hurt, or his demeaning the franchise about not honoring that "missing" bonus.

Having said that, if the skins plan to release/trade Arrington at the end of the season :Flush: , I can NOT believe that he is not a better rushing defensive end that anyone else we have. Let's use him in that "package", and maybe he will go to 6% of the plays.

I hope this does not develop (if it hasn't already) into an ego thing. :banghead:

my 2 cents...

We should all do what Joe Gibbs wants and stop the wild speculation. We will never know why they aren't playing him. That's not Gibbs's style. He keeps any internal dissent behind closed doors, because airing dirty laundry in public would "embarrass the Redskins," which he strictly forbids. For all we know, Arrington could have yelled at Greg Williams to go and *&^% his own *&^%( one day, and now Williams is still peeved. It could be anything. Who knows?

That's why the Redskins and Arrington are both taking the high road in all this, and not saying anything bad.

If Arrington will be traded?

What position do you think we we fill in:

1. another Stout DT
2. Pass rushing end
3. Big offensive line
4. another speedy wide receiver
5. another TE
6. A high draft pick

A big Target at Wideout....peep this if you think Santana is Dangerous now, what if someone had to plan...to stop him, but worry about a Receiver like Jimmy Smith...old I know but still Dangerous...and with Patten as the 3rd WR....man....I promise we win 11 games easy

I don't believe Snyder has that kind of say over Gibbs, we are not cutting him, possibly a trade is on the horizon, I say get rid of that contract, I said it before and I will say it again, Williams can easily replace lavars production, with minumum wage, or very reasonable type contract LB's, all Williams needs is an athletic guy and he will teach him the rest, his schemes will bring out the best in that player, and that's the problemn with Lavar, I believe he can't do it any other way than what he knows, and that's to use his athletism to chase people all over the field regardless of the problems he will create for the rest of the defense, and Williams won't stand for it. They are treating Lavar as a football player, and not a personality who should be played because all the media hype say's he should because he's a charasmatic personality, and he doesn't like it.

There may be truth in your forked tongue Kimosabe. I believe this is true. At the moment, Lavars continuing crime is his habit of airing dirty laundry in the media. CARDINAL SIN! For those of you Snyder conspiracy theorists, does it make sense to bench Lavar if he could help the team? Does it make sense to bench someone alleged to be so good as to help us to the Superbowl? (I think he is damn good as well) Does it make sense to save a few million ( in performance bonus) Snyder would forgoe the chance to win the bowl and reap many millions in additional revenue. Does any of that really make sense considering how much Snyder has been wiling to spend at every turn trying to win? NO! Williams has a problem with Lavar...... Probably, He can learn to change or learn to leave.

I'm really torn here.

On one hand you have LaVar's monster contract. If we could get out from under that, it will really help clear up our long term cap situation. Is he really worth his contract? I guess the argument could easily be made that he's not, since we've seen the defense play so well without him.

On the other hand, LaVar is one of my favorite players and it would really stink to see him go elsewhere.

Keeping emotions out of it, I'm in favor of getting rid of his contract, even if it means one of my favorite players playing for someone else next year.

On a related note, if LaVar goes, I'm officially DONE with buying authentic jerseys of current players. I thought LaVar was the safest bet, and a year later my jersey is in danger of being yet another ex-player jersey. Honestly, if it wasn't for that jersey I might not really mind as much if he's outta here!

Re: All Arrington All The Time (Mega Merge Club Mix)

Funny you mention jerseys. Last night I was taking the Metro home from work and this kid is walking through the aisle selling a brand new, (probably stolen, I might add) Santana Moss authentic NFL jersey for 30 bucks. So the kid runs into this dude wearing a Redskins hat, and the guy goes "Moss"??, he won't even be with the Skins next year"! The kid responds, "Are you crazy, Santana aint goin' nowhere"! The guy then responds, "Yeah that's what they said about Coles (and I have one of his jerseys), but look what happened to him". The kid goes, "Dude, Coles just didn't wanna be here." After a brief pause, the kid continued to snake through the crowded train holding up Moss' jersey....."Moss jersey for 30 bucks".

Our culture is all about what's the next hot thing, while at the same time making guarantees that it's a long-term, sure deal. Professional sports has done a masterful job at marketing the fact that athletes are "locked into long-term deals" and then turning around and capitalizing on their popularity. It's so unfair to the fans. I think these companies should offer some type of rebate or possible discount toward a more recent jersey when this happens. I know they won't though. Look at how Sean Taylor changed his number a couple of times during the off season, basically leaving many fans with a pretty worthless #36 jersey.

Matty, your jersey comments sort of evoked those images that's all. Didn't mean to get on a soap box or anything.

I wonder who's jersey the kid will be holding up in December.....hopefully it won't be Jason Campbell:)

something is definitly going on behind closed doors.the one thing that football coaches are always looking for is playmakers, and regardless of how much anyone thinks #56 freelances, there is no doubt he makes things happen when he is on the field.and besides that, how much does arrington really have to know about coach williams defense if they would just use him on the blitz packages(which is probably roughly about 35-40% of the time)

No doubt, I think it's probably safe to assume they are prepping him for a monster deal. I read in the WP that most execs think we can only cop a 3rd or 4th rounder for LaVar. I find that crazy.

If we can't get either an immediate starter or a 1st rounder it aint worth it. Unless they can work out one of those exotic deals where the other team basically eats up all of his contract and we assume no or very little cap hit next year.

On the issue of Lavar and money. He like many others is a favorite of mine. However, he is going to cost us in the area of 10M to keep in 2006? Is anybody worth that? When that contract was negotiated, obviously nobody expected it to come to fruition. They are re-negotiated and restructured, blah, blah. With the scuffle over the vanishing 6.5M in the contract, lack of playing time, etc. He will probably not be in a negotiable humor. He may tell us to stick-it with regard to re-structure (if we are so-inclined). At that point, if not before the Skins will be looking to deal, if possible benifit exists by doing so.

If LaVar is so overrated, how do you explain 3 straight pro-bowls? The man is a competitor that bring 100% every play, every series, every quarter! He is loyal and is a good man. Isn't that the kind of person you want on your team? He is a class act. The man has never had to opportunity to be on the field with this coaching staff. A few preseason games last year. Remember the Atlanta game, when he played, he was all over the field, in Vicks face, caused a fumble, caused and INT, and forced Vick to throw a couple more out of bounds. LaVar was the reason Vick was taken out of the game. They can not possible have a "true read" on LaVar on how he would play in this system. If they are looking at film from Spurriers last year, when the D was bottom 5 in the league, he was trying to do too much, and make something happen. But when you are that bad who could fault him for trying to make a play. In this D, the plays come to the players, thats why Pierce, Marshall and Clark are all stepping up. Put these players(for the exception of Pierce, maybe) on other teams and they are average players. LaVar deserves to be playing for all he has done and agreed to do for this organization. This would be a good time for Danny to express his opinion, you know he wants LaVar on the field. I mean, LaVar was the face of the Redskins for the 5 years, Darrell Green annointed him the next "TRUE REDSKINS"

#56fanatic 10-05-2005 11:27 AM

Re: Lavar on 980 @ 4pm
12th Man/FRPLG:

I don't know why Arrington is not on the field; only Gibbs and Willliams know that.

Last year, the Redskins defense was really, really good, LaVar Arrington contributed next to nothing to their being really, really good. So, the coaching staff has some reason to suspect that they can have a really, really good defense on the field with LaVar Arrington on the sidelines or in the owners' box or at Redskins' Park or in Lower Slobbovia. They already did that last year.

Now it is 2005. Warrick Holdman played well in the exhibition games and LaVar Arrington's knee required him to ease on through some of the workouts. So, it's time to name a starting unit and Gibbs and Williams sit down to make up the first string. Remember, Gibbs wears the hat of Coach Gibbs and also the hat of President of Football Operations Gibbs.

IF Williams tells Gibbs that Williams believes that the defense will be just fine with Holdman at starting LB, let's IMAGINE what Joe Gibbs does. Remember, this is IMAGINATION because we cannot read minds. And remember, the premise here is that Williams believes that the defense is perfectly OK with Holdman in the starting line-up and Arrington playing only a little bit.

Gibbs has two choices; he can tell Williams that he wants Arrington on the field or he can go along with Williams.

Choice #1 - Overrule Willliams and put LaVar on the starting unit:

Pro: You get a physically gifted football player out there on the field.
You "get your money's worth" from your highest plaid player.

Con: You will have a less than fully happy Defensive Coordinator if you overrule him.
You will have to pay Arrington even more money if he achieves the incentive levels in his contract.
You may put Arrington a year closer to leaving the team as a free agent if he plays and plays really well.

Choice #2 - Go along with the recommendation of Defensive Coordinator

Pro: Happier coaching staff
You have one hell of a guy on the bench to provide a "shot in the arm" for the defense if they ever falter.
You can sit back and see how the season unfolds. If the defense is strong, you just let things keep on keeping on; if they hit a rough spot, you can be the guy who "makes the tough call" and insert Arrington into the lineup.

Con: You have to listen to media gurus like Doc Walker and Al Koken wonder why all this is happening.

So, if you were Joe Gibbs and you got that recommendation from Gregg Williams, what would you have done?
Joe is the head coach, Williams is the "assistant head coach" This is what Joe get paid to do, make those kinds of decisions. When Greg Williams said they didn't need Trotter, albeit Pierce stepped in and played very well, what did Joe say about Trotter, "well we were wrong there, Trotter is a very good player!" If Joe feels LaVar should be on the field, then Joe has the right to make that decision and if it fails, then it fails. LaVar is a superior athlete to any LB we have on the roster, and would make a really really good defense that much better. A true playmaker in every sense of the word!!

Re: All Arrington All The Time (Mega Merge Club Mix)

For me this goes back to trusting the coaches- Like Matty I am torn as LaVar is one of my favorite Skins, but there must be something else going on.

This is the way I see it:

Lavar has to know the defense by now, but he is not forcing the coaches to play him.

This means to me one of two things-

1. There is a petty personal grude here and the coaches are hamstringing LaVar on purpose.

2. LaVar is not executing with in the system to the point where we are better with him on the field.

I have to believe # 2, I just can't see Williams/Gibbs/Lindsay all agreeing to put an their agenda above the team- above all Gibbs wants to win and he has worked through strong personalities before. There is no rumbleing from teammates, no disention in the lockerroom, that says the players either see "it" as well or trust the coaches more than LaVar. I dont know what is going on but with an athlete of LaVar's caliber there has to be something.

I would rather he stays (meaning plays and produces) but we can't pay that kind of cash for a guy who dosent see the field- for what ever reason.

The only thing good out of this whole mess is both side are keeping it in house. What a change that is.

Call me crazy and a blind loyalist, but I'm trusting our coaches on this one.

As much as I love LaVar, if Williams and co. feel that LaVar doesn't fit in to the mix, I'm going to defer to their judgement and trust the decision.

We had the #3 overall D last year and so far this year we're #5 all without LaVar. Seems to me that the guys running the ship have a firm grasp on what they're doing.

I mean, LaVar was the face of the Redskins for the 5 years, Darrell Green annointed him the next "TRUE REDSKINS"
I agree with most, if not all of what you're saying here. First of all, I don't think LaVar is overated, per se. However, is his current value to the team contractually and athletically worth $10 million?? That's the big question my friend. Yes, unfortunately this is the business side of it. I think when you hear people say, LaVar is overated perhaps they are saying that in terms of how much we are paying him and how well our defense has done without him how can we justify keeping him on the roster.

I really don't think anyone questions his athletic prowess or ability to be an outstanding Pro-Bowl linebacker. But I do think what the Redskins are now asking themselves, especially with the direction the team is taking on being financially responsible, are both parties better off without each other??

Again, LaVar is a great talent and has done a lot of great things for this team and this city but maybe, just maybe it won't be a bad thing if we can deal him somewhere else.
LaVar is a superior athlete to any LB we have on the roster, and would make a really really good defense that much better. A true playmaker in every sense of the word!!
Right on!!!!!!

Re: Rumors
I love the skins winning but I detect the distinct odor of bs surrounding the Arrington situation cuz there is absolutely no way holdman or clemons or even the 2 combined can match the playmaking ability of Arrington. The guys on the Comcast post game show they were mentioning that Holdman's name hadn't even been mentioned during the game and almost never seems to be around the ball and looking back at a lot of the footage they're right. This just seems like it's gonna get worse before it gets better but I hope I'm wrong.
You have got that right!! Those two, Holdman and Clemons, do not have the ability that LaVar does. Nothing against those two. Holdman, in his days with Chicago was one of the better linebackers, but neither of the two have the speed, strength, and outright FIRE! to play to the ability of LaVar. Like I said in a previous responce to someone, in this defense, the plays come to you when you are this aggressive. This scheme fits LaVar. Williams and Gibbs were so excited to have LaVar playing in this scheme. Williams said he couldn't wait to see what LaVar was going to do. He would be a probowler every year. Something is going on that nobody knows about, only players and coaches. Where is Danny when you need him? I know he wants LaVar on the field, but he is in no way going to step on Joes toes!

Again, I don't think there is any question that LaVar is one of the most talented players we have, BUT is he worth his monster contract??

That's what it appears this is all boiling down to.

Re: Lavar on 980 @ 4pm
I forgot to add 56: I agree we have a some overachievers on our defense. Thanks to Gregg Williams and his staff. But I will disagree that most are average players. It could be argued that many NFL teams, forget about the NFC, many NFL teams would love to have: C.Griffin, Sean Taylor, Shawn Springs, Marcus Washington, Carlos Rogers down the road, hell I'll even throw in Joe Salave'a. No he's no super star, but he plays great within the system, and I would say could compliment most DTs very well in the league right now. That's more than half of the defense.

In my opinion, every team has about half dozen or so players on either side of the ball that are products of good coaching and the "system", if you will. Jeremiah Trotter is a very good example of someone who is a Pro Bowler with the right team.

So while you say that we have average players, in that case who doesn't??

Re: All Arrington All The Time (Mega Merge Club Mix)

This whole Lavar "doesn't fit in" shit is totaly false. I say this because I remember last year in the preseason game agianst the Falcons, he had a monster game and Williams put him in the right position to do very well.
I think it's more of what I said in an earlier post about Snyder, or that Arrington is a victom of his own attitude. When u see him on the sideline he is isolated and not looking over schemes or talking with Williams at all. Maybe he is isolating himself out of a job

Re: Rumors

He is getting paid what Danny agreed to pay him. there was no negotiation. If someone wanted to pay you 10 million to pick up trash, would you do it? right! What I was reading earlier, they could take to roster bonus, make it guaranteed money and stretch it over the length of the contract. Making the amount a little smaller per year. We are eventually going to come to this problem with all the big names we have on our team. Portis, will have the same problems in the next couple of years. Springs signed a big deal for a guy 30 years old. Was spings worth a 10 million signing bonus? Is any of these guys "worth" all the money they get paid. What I am saying is, once in a blue moon does a guy with the athletic ability, the on the field and off the field persona of a LaVar Arrington come along. He loves the fans and basically was going to let the 6.5 million dispute go away, but the Players union wouldn't let it. He said last year if Dan Snyder and the Redskins ever decide to let him go or say they wanted to trade him he would retire. He does not want to wear another uniform, he want to be a redskins for LIFE. In todays world of sports, that is a very refreshing statement and one that sticks with me when i hear these guys demaning trades, demanding contract extensions, release me all this crap. LaVar is "THE MAN!!!"
Pretty much nailed it D.
WAY OFF DUDE!! dont you remember the way the organization hyped him up when they drafted him. The next LT, the next great thing. Dont you remember the LA thing, the #56 jersey they gave him on the draft stage. This is what they wanted him to be. Now all of the sudden, this is the wrong way to be. He is a team guy and will do anything they ask. If he goes to another team, the Redskins are making a mistake beyond measurement.
