Howell might not be the answer but Brissett and Heinicke aren't either. This defense has been ass the entire year. Some of you guys are acting like we're a qb away from contending. We're not. We're a qb, an offensive line and an entire defense.
And Coaching Staff and TE |

Re: The Sam Howell Thread
I'm really curious to see what happens next year regarding the QB situation. I'm wondering what an actual qualified GM / HC would want. Wondering if they could just roll with JB especially if he finishes out the season playing well.

We still have an outside shot at getting the #1 overall pick, at worst we're most likely going to be in the 3-5 range. I'd expect a new GM to be all in for a QB at the top of the draft. JB isn't the answer, good backup any coach would love to have, but he could also want to leave for a better chance to start elsewhere. |
Ron went with Sam to try and save his job.
Had the year gone well and Sam flourished Ron could claim it was his staff that drafted and developed him, and then argue that ownership should keep that connection intact. The wheels fell off with Sam and Ron’s chances of returning collapsed with it. At this point it doesn’t matter who plays so Ron is trying to save his overall record from dropping below .500
I would think Ron had to win to keep his job and picking Sam to start was just another bad choice Ron made. |
Re: The Sam Howell Thread
Miss Heinicke, yet?
We all liked how the team played up for him but in the end he is not an NFL starter. While most everyone here would say how they really liked "Him" we probably all agree he is not the answer. |

There was no other option than to start Sam this year. |
Re: The Sam Howell Thread
Starting JB this year would have given us a ceiling of 8 or 9 wins and probably a one and done in the playoffs. The payoff wasn't going to be enough to save Ron's job.
He rolled the dice on the outside chance Sam could develop into a franchise QB, hanging his hat on Sam's development was the only shot he had to somehow save his job. And even then I'm sure he knew the chance of that happening was slim. |

:laughing2 Nah. He's shown he can play in this league. There's a role for him, even if it's not as a starter. |

Ahhh the howell hate is hilarious.. if not here, somewhere, he'll get a chance with a real supporting cast of o-line and coaches.. til then no judgement from me. I still think he'll be just fine if his mentality isn't completely shot from this dumpster fire.

Re: The Sam Howell Thread
Is Sam doesn’t play another down this season (probably won’t)
His final stats will be 3624 yards 19 TDS 17 INTs 4 Fumbles 2 lost He leads the league in total TOs and Sacks taken. There was some awesome flashes this season from Sam, the two eagles games he was ridiculously good. The Bills game (5 TOs) Was ridiculously bad. I still think with a good OL and Run game he could be a Ryan Fitzpatrick type starter. His accuracy issues are very similar to Ryan’s were and some decisions he makes. Re: The Sam Howell Thread
The good thing about Howell is he's basically free for 2 more years. Drafting another QB doesn't mean he's gone. He's a 5th rounder. That is where you draft back-up type QB's.
He can win the position w/ new coaches or be a good back-up. I think he's definitely 1 of the best 64 QBs in the league, so we have a spot for him. |
Re: The Sam Howell Thread
Going to order a Caleb jersey.

Re: The Sam Howell Thread
Too funny, so much for Brissett starting on Sunday:
Brissett lands on injury report with a tight hammy. Very interesting if they have to go back to Sam. Never good to land on injury report on a Friday. Fuller, St.-Juste, Butler, Larsen, Leno all out for Sunday's game. Jacoby Brissett was limited with a hamstring injury. He reported tightness after practice yesterday. Questionable for Sunday. |
Re: The Sam Howell Thread
Last year Heinicke 'nudged' the Coaching staff to start Sam. Maybe this is Jacoby's subtle way of nudging...
Or he has no desire to play behind that O-line. :D |

He’s shown enough to continue to develop here and in a better more balanced system surrounded by actual talented players, I think he would be an asset. Its insufferable to hear the Sam bashing from guys like Sheehan and other talking heads while ignoring not only a bad Oline, but below par talent like Logan Thomas who can’t block, second year dud Johan Dotson, Brian Robinson mediocre, Antonio Gibson who failed to live up to his potential, bust Dyami Brown, etc. When we talk about complete rebuild, include these positions as well. |

Caleb Williams under same circumstances would fail also ...

Re: The Sam Howell Thread
Dotson and McLaurin will both be over 1000 yards next year and the Oline will give up half the sacks all because Sam is no longer shitting the bed at QB.
I can't wait to hear Sam supporters talk about how much talent he has going into his 3rd rookie season and how he just needs a chance with 5 all pro linemen and 3 superstar WRs. Dude will end up on someone's practice squad next year and you guys will still make excuses for him, "He is shellshocked, EB ruined him". |

Re: The Sam Howell Thread
I 100% want Sam back next year. You got a young guy w/ some talent and keep developing him. Really hoping the new regime VALUES the QB position because Ron DID NOT. You have to think starter, vet back up and one guy developing.
With that said Sam needs to go back in the lab. He seems to not see the field very well, maybe he can't see over the defenders. Some short guys struggle with that although Brees never did. Sam has a long way to go but he has shown some really good stuff. Needs better coaching, better system and like I said, needs to keep developing. Maybe he is a really good back up in this league, nothing wrong w/ that. But I don't feel like you shut the door on him. That would be a mistake. |

So a realistic trade probably wouldn't happen until after the draft, if at all. But otherwise, yeah, you definitely keep him on the roster next season. Note - I would highly doubt that the new front office sees Fromm as a viable No. 2 QB. He will probably be gone. And Brissett will probably sign somewhere else with a better opportunity to start all season. Going to need to add at least 2 QB's this off-season, to add with Howell. |
Re: The Sam Howell Thread
I am conflicted my 2 cents are that if we draft a QB bring in a solid vet for leadership and stability. Does Sam go back to QB3 then if the draft pick pans out? I know there are more teams that need a QB than there are QBs in the draft. If someone misses their guy perhaps we can get some draft capitol from someone for Sam. There is no way they release him on a rookie deal though that is just crazy talk

Re: The Sam Howell Thread
Dotson may just be suffering a sophomore slump. I'd see how he looks in camp before deciding. Besides we may be losing 3 WR's in FA, so trading a guy who may recover in year 3 (before he even gets a sniff of what will likely be a new offense) could be a mistake. I think Dyami Brown is surplus and I'd rather re-sign Pringle.

Dotson was a baller in college and looked very promising last year, all our WR's are having down years this year. NO WAY I'M TRADING HIM THIS OFF-SEASON! |

There's other number 2s that are better than Dotson......if I'm the new GM I'm looking to replace all of the slacking players...... |
Re: The Sam Howell Thread
Dotson isn't going anywhere.
I'm looking at someone like Jonathan Allen that could be dealt. |
