I remember watching a very old clip of Bill Walsh saying he drafted Joe Montana because had the best QB footwork since Joe Namath. I watched a recent interview of Jayden Daniels at the combine being asked what he could of done better last season (an incredible year for JD) and Jayden said footwork. That his footwork at times could have been have been better as it relates to timing of the release of the pass. Then Dan Orlovsky says Drake Maye's footwork needs improvement and that he needs to sit on the bench a year to learn to be an NFL QB. Meantime Rich Eisen only cares about arm strength. Interesting. |

Here is another good QB prospects clip with Chris Simms. Chris has CW at #1 in a tier by himself. Next he has JD at #2, also in a tier by himself as a great prospect. His Tier 3 is populated by three or four prospects who he is not prepared to rank at this time. There are a lot of detailed observations in this clip. Some "NFL Insiders" are saying that the first two picks in the draft are a lock with Chicago taking Caleb Williams at #1 and Washington taking Jayden Daniels at #2. |

Apparently the great Ron Rivera thinks we should take Jayden Daniels so I would avoid him like the plague.

Re: 2024 Early Bird Draft Thread
Jayden Daniels: The reigning Heisman Trophy winner was the only QB and one of just two combine prospects (LSU teammate Malik Nabers being the other) who did not get measurements taken. Both will do their measurements at LSU's Pro Day on March 27. With Daniels opting not to throw or undergo athletic testing, his measurements were going to be his biggest takeaway from Indianapolis, especially because of his slight frame. (He's listed as 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds on the LSU website). If Daniels ends up weighing less than 205 pounds, he'll join a group of QBs without much NFL success. In fact, only five signal-callers under that weight have started at least 14 games in a single season since 2000, according to Yahoo Sports.

For QBs: Height 6'2" or taller Hands 9 1/2 " or longer Weight 200+ LBS or heaver. I suspect JD is under 200 lbs. You can see he has the height. He's a brother so you know he has big hands. a 195 lb weigh in might be a red flag for some teams. Fortunately teams don't seem hung up on this. Bryce Young is under 6' and Burrow has girly hands. JD can bulk up easily. You just can't hit QBs like you used to so I don't think it matters. |

I’ve heard rumors Caleb Williams does not want to play in Chicago. Caleb and Jayden both said they like Washington’s coaching staff, especially since Caleb has a history with OC Klngsbury. So this video was interesting in that could he be trying to get out of the #1 slot Chicago? |
Re: 2024 Early Bird Draft Thread
One thing you don’t hear at all is “who is the no 1 QB” on the board.
There is zero doubt Williams is much better prospect than JD. JD seriously flawed like most QB prospects, but his weight should be a major concern. |

Re: 2024 Early Bird Draft Thread
I remain in the Maye camp but after watching more of his games his speed concerns me. Sure he is mobile in space, but when he needs to escape defenders he is routinely caught by them. Many of them are not taking angles, they are going straight towards the sidelines and Drake can't turn the corner.

Burrow , Herbert , Tua , Stroud all in the same boat but all big time QBs... I'm not too worried about his speed TBH.. I think he'll be ok |

And those are the types of QBs I prefer. But Maye has to able to throw it like they do at the next level and that remains to be seen. I just wish he had the speed of say Daniel Jones (who I hate as a player). Or Hell even Brock Purdy who I saw beat defenders to the edge as well. |
Re: 2024 Early Bird Draft Thread
I have been on the Maye train all along. I much prefer a pocket passer because the team that wins the Super Bowl has a really good pocket passer nearly every time.
I have been watching Maye's full games, the first few I kept trying to convince myself that he could be like Ben Rothlisberger. But after watching 6-7 games now I just don't see anything that would make me believe he will be special. He does not escape traffic in the pocket nearly as well as the more athletic QBs, his footspeed I also have to question. He got a lot of rushing yards in the open field but when he needs to beat a defender to the edge he struggles. His passing is good but nothing close to elite. I think the odds are far better that he ends up somewhere between Blake Bortels and David Carr than he ends up as an elite QB. If you are going to take a swing take a big swing on a guy who could be great, and I no longer believe that is Drake Maye. |

Re: 2024 Early Bird Draft Thread
I voted for non-qb player just to annoy everybody. WILDCARD BITCHES!
I'm not all-in on either one. Daniels is the consensus better qb but he's gotta be pretty light and you know defenders are gonna try to hit him every chance they get. Maye has the prototypical size you want but his mechanics? need work. I just hope whoever we do take buries themselves in the film room because getting drafted is the easy part. |
Re: 2024 Early Bird Draft Thread
I voted trade down for similar reasons :)
I will say though, that a small part of me thinks that they will get an offer they can't refuse, and if they aren't 100% sold on Maye or Daniels they just might take it. |

I voted non-qb...but could go trade down as well... Simply because i personally have seen enough in Howell that with a competent staff on both sides of the ball and upgrades in the roster.. i truly feel he will succeed. The back of my mind is hoping the new regime saw what i saw and they just give him a chance.

Re: 2024 Early Bird Draft Thread
So we take QB at 2. What else would it take if we trade one of our seconds and one of our thirds to move up and get one of the more highly touted Tackles like a Mims or a Latham? We would still have 7 picks in this years draft. We are taking a quarterback at 2 we absolutely need to put people in front of him who can play immediately. We currently have a C, a RG, and a LG I am comfortable with. Outside of those three, Biadasz, Allegretti, and Cosmi we have Stromberg who is a question mark. There is really nothing at Tackle and no depth at G.

I was one of Howells biggest fans. Basically SF’s Vice President. There is certainly part of me that would love to use those 9 picks to amass an awesome oline but the problem is we are in a position to draft one of three guys who are possibly generational guys. If you look at the crop ready to come out next year it is hard to find one. Plus we may not sit at number 2 in the draft anyway. If we keep Sam and he does not pan out it would probably be catastrophic. |

Re: 2024 Early Bird Draft Thread
Our Day 2 picks are more interesting since we already know we are going with 1 of 3 players at #2 (all QBs). I like the idea of trading up to get a top OT or possibly Edge rusher (OT preferable). Maybe both as we have two 2ds and two thirds. Could we end up with three 1st round picks?

A few years back, we traded our second rounder and the next year's second rounder to jump back in to the first round to get Montez. I don't see why we couldn't do something along those lines again this year. |

I wouldn't mind in the least if we traded up to the first round get a top Tackle. I think we should look into trading for a current NFL tackle, as well. |

I would be on board with that. Also Chief you are right. That was for I believe the last pick in the first though and Sweat wasn’t probably as sought after as Mims or Latham. Im thinking we need to get another pick in the first in the top 15 to assure one of those types of Tackles. A second and third should do that. I think? |

If SF69 was GM no doubt I am trading back. The reason is I don't think the top 3 QB's that the media has shoved down our throats are as good as advertised for the pro game. They're going to be overdrafted cause QB's always are.

Doesn't matter what the media says... Peters and co will go by their own evaluations of these guys and decide. They will know a lot more about these QBs than the media or any of us. |

I don't have faith in CW or JD like I don't have faith in Lamar to win a SB. Just that prototype of qb is not my preference and always worry about longevity. Drake Maye in the draft would be basically duplicating Sam in many ways (not just unc connection, but throwing power, accuracy and I feel like he had struggled reading defenses and I feel like NONE of the 3 can look off a corner or safety... Sam also better eacapability and wheels. Guy is very good at it.) which also seems pointless to me. I don't know it's tough. I will always back whoever we choose of course. I just don't see it... the hype reminds me of when we took chase young at #2 - i watched his tape and it really wasnt anything that special. All the holes in his game were on full display IMO. Running around tackles in college isnt really shit... i hated the pick... then he showed us flashes made some places, won ROY and then fell of because a lazy loaf injury or no injury. I see decent highlights on the qbs up for grabs but there tons of holes, too. Will they fix them? Who knows.... Also scarred from RG3 running qb I think lol. I dunno. Just saw enough in Sam and really think if given a fair chance, last year was not that, he will develop into a very good long term qb in this league. Just the 2 cents but I feel the naysayers pov, too, understandable. |
Re: 2024 Early Bird Draft Thread
Editing a post on the phone sometimes takes forever. So I'm just going to make a new one.And maybe content for that record.Everyone keeps talking about while there will not be any advantage in learning curve for any q b's versus sam Having the experience of a whole year in the league playing at the NFL speed. And tempo against professionally coached defenses and athletes definitely counts for something. Part of me feels like peters may have learned something or even be a little bit gunshy after the lance situation(minus giving away picks of course). A small part of me thinks that they may stick with sam.... off my thoughts, my worse fear is we spend #2, they aren't up to par and Sam beats them out / comes in b/c injury and takes the job. That'd be worst case scenario. Pending he's even still with the team come week 1

Re: 2024 Early Bird Draft Thread
It's fine and understandable for everyone to judge Sam but... give any 3 of these "top 3" sams situation the past 2 years and last year with a new offense? ... I feel a below 5% chance they do any better than he did and since that's his biggest knock? I just don't see the logic behind calling these 3 guys "better" without playing an NFL down. Such are rookie qbs tho 🤷
