Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
I think most of us can appreciate both sides of the argument, but it's hard to be in this discussion without arguing for one side or the other. I say sign him because that's what's best, but it's still not a slam dunk decision- there are some drawbacks to this and there will be pressure for McCloughan to hit in the draft and for existing players to develop.
Everyone knows that the draft is a crapshoot. And if McCloughan is not fortunate enough he could be on the hot seat. And I believe he is the one person that has helped this team turn it around the most. |
Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
If it's unfair to anyone, it's McCloughan. I just don't want to chase him away.
|
Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
I think if McCloughan quite literally plays moneyball at the QB position and it backfires horribly, that will for sure end his tenure here and most likely his NFL career.
Another great poster here outlined the scenario - It is sometime late in December and the 2-11 Washington Redskins are starting Nate Sudfeld because Colt McCoy has been out for the season with an injury, facing the 12-2 Denver Broncos led by Kirk Cousins and a first year head coach. |
Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
I think most everyone thinks Cousins is a good QB and may turn into a great QB. But it's not a given. The only problem is he will be paid like he's a great QB already. And the more money that you give him, the less you can give someone else.
So you're saying, if we build a complete team with a crappy quarterback, we might win some games and maybe a Super Bowl? Sounds iffy, but let's give it a shot. |
Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
This is easier said than done.
How do the Patriots , Seattle, Denver (last year), Giants, Baltimore, Carolina (last year) do it? What about great/good defenses with large contracts at qb position- Houston, Dallas, Kansas City, cincy? Is it magic? |

Yeah that's EXACTLY what I said. If you call Cousins a crappy qb. If you can't get I'm being sarcastic- no that's not close to anything I've said. |
Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
There is no chance colt McCoy starts next year even if kirk isn't back.
But if the skins won't pay Cousins, how are the other teams able to do it, i mean the teams who want them as their QB.
The way the Redskins explain it, it's almost a "If you have one, we can't have the other" - So, we pay $$$ for the QB, but then we can't afford a good defense. OR, if we build up the defense, we can't pay a starting QB. How do good teams do it?
They can do both and they know it. When you hear McCloughan say we have to worry about all 53, that's nothing but posturing to maintain what little leverage they have in the negotiation. They know they're going to have to pony up, it's just a matter of keeping his number lower. If you see them franchise him for a second year in a row, I think then you can read it as a genuine question in their minds that he's the guy. Until then, consider it nothing but gamesmanship. |
Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
But here's the question- how do you contend if you aren't confident that you have a great or elite player on either side of the ball?
Looking at recent history, haven't they had at least one player that was elite that won the Super Bowl? |

Is this enough? Even with Cousins? |

In reality though, this is one of mooby's way of arguing. He puts words in your mouth and uses these words to argue with. This is what makes him a punk. |

I'm not in the giving him whatever he demands camp. I hope it's 22 million or less. Based on everything he's said though I don't see that happening. |

Based on everything he's said though I don't see that happening.
Letting him go for what? Nothing? Couldn't they work a deal with another club for the Redskins to sign him to a contract that would be acceptable to that club and then trade him to that club for a haul of draft picks? Outright cutting him is out of the question, IMO. By the way, I'm guessing that the $22M that you say is not too much this year would have been too much in your mind last year. This current dilemma could have easily been avoided by the Redskins if they had signed him to a long-term deal last year. If the Skins franchise him again this year then the $24M cost to tag him will look cheap compared to what it would take to sign him the year after that. Plus there is no way to structure a one year franchise tag contract to reduce the cap hit for it. I think the Redskins screwed up by not signing him to a long-term deal last season and if they tag him again this year it will probably end up being an even worse salary cap screw up. Each time he is franchised, the Skins are digging themselves a deeper hole. |
Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
Guys ..I am watching the Giants /packers game and Rogers looks not good against the giants D ..maybe that that D would give any QB a hard time.
|
Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
Yeah it appears that the giants d is just that good not the QB play
