I don't think monuments would be all that bad, it could definitely lead to some cool looking logos. Either way I'm not going to get too worked up over any of this. There will eventually be a new name, some will like it, some won't, and we'll all move forward.
To me this would be the best one and make the most sense. You could really come up w/ so many great logos. |

I haven't actually heard Wright's comment in context, but off the top of my head, the National Zoo seems like it opens the door for any animal to be authentic. In addition, the word authentic doesn't imply or require a specific tie to DC/MD/VA such as the idea of a wolf walking the streets of DC, it could easily mean that the characteristics that they keep flashing on these videos are found both in the Washington team and the Wolves branding. So when they talk about the team values and traits or what the team stands that is where the authentic part comes in. They used terms like nobility, pride, grit, resilience, something deep and meaningful. The wolf as a spirit animal lists most if not all of those characteristics. Interestingly, I rewatched all three making the brand videos, and the first one ended with them asking kids if it should be an animal and all but 2 raised their hands to say it should. No one piece in these videos prove it will be Wolves, but so far, watching all 3 I see a very strong marketing method leading to the Wolves. for like nobility pride, being noble, having pride, caring empathy relentlessness, tradition, strong passion, unified around something deep and meaningful (wolves have resilince grit tradition nobility should allow that spirit to continue. |
Re: Come up with a new name for the Redskins
So now that reports are out that the new name won't be any kind of animal or human tribe (I assume that eliminates Redtails too) what does that leave us with?

It's going to be something that ties in specifically with the area. I know you want it to be wolves and that's fine, but you seem to be stretching things quite a bit to fit what you want. |

It means capturing the values and traits of the area. For that Wolves works fine. I definitely do want Wolves, I also think Wolves, Commanders and WFT are the 3 in competition, and I would be good with Wolves or Commanders, and would hold my nose for a while but ultimately accept WFT. I just hope they pick something better than Guardians, RedTails, RedHogs, or Monuments |
Re: Come up with a new name for the Redskins
Not really sure wolves fits under authentic without a bit of a stretch of the imagination. And when compared with something like Monuments, it's a clear winner as to which one is truly more authentic to the area. (Not saying I want Monuments).

do you have a link or source for that? I haven't heard anything official saying that. I do think people are trying to use "authentic" as a dismissal of animals but I don't believe the team has ever said that. |

Re: Come up with a new name for the Redskins
It’s not gonna be a animal? Well thank goodness ! There are very few teams with animal names that I like .. the Eagles represents the liberty of philly , the ravens represent Edgar Allan Poe connection with Baltimore .. the dolphins I get .. the Seahawks works ..the rest for me are ho-hum , naming a team after a animal without any other connection is a easy cop out .. let’s see why not the cheetahs, snakes, lizards, opossum, rats, toads, whales, sharks, buzzards, Polecats, elephants, rhinos, … there is NO animal that is authentic, unique or any direct connection with Washington DC …

Re: Come up with a new name for the Redskins
Hard to see WFT still being in the running, that would be a bit of a PR disaster if they took 2 years only to stay with WFT.

Actually Pandas have a huge connection with DC through the good will connection between China and the US. Go Pandas. I still haven't seen a statement that says no animals. I think that is smoke like the list of 8. Matty any chance to redo the poll on a new thread (this one is huge anyway) maybe doing Monuments, Commanders, Wolves, other (or leave Wolves off if you feel it has been ruled out.) |
Re: Come up with a new name for the Redskins
Jason Wright
“The new name will be authentic to DC”
Here is the actual context of that quote:
"I think the biggest thing they did that was important was that they went with something that they believe was authentic to Cleveland," Wright said. "They have the same mix of reactions from fans that I expect we will have when we roll out our new name, logo, etc. But the way that they did it did have some meaningful tie -- the way we talk about having a meaningful tie to the area and to the history of this team, something that feels something traditional, grit and all that stuff."
He doesn't say authentic to DC, but authentic to the area. He then defines what that means: something that feels traditional, grit and all that stuff (i assume that stuff is referring to things like nobility, resilience and the other words in the video). Not gonna lie, that looks like a blow to the Wolves. BUT there is also a lot of wiggle room within the answer. All they have to say to be true to his statement is "We feel the spirit of the wolfpack captures the grit and perseverance of this area". We will see, but if the stadium is roaring with howls all season, they may expand on what feeling traditional, and having grit is all about. |

Washington Warthogs. Nod to the hogs, the badass tank destroyer aircraft (military), and it begins with W. Wouldn’t shock me. Wouldn’t be my first choice either - I’d prefer wolves - but I could see it.

A lot of over stretching about that "authentic" comment... Especially when you consider authentic isn't even about Washington in the quote [emoji1787]
https://www.nbcsports.com/washington/football-team/wft-team-president-learned-lessons-clevelands-guardians-name-change He's talking about Cleveland's renaming process and trying to say nice things about them because he knows how it's like to be in that spot, knows they're gonna get roasted by some people no matter what they pick, and would like not to get roasted too hard by too many people... He's speaking in very overall generic terms. Trying to see it as a hint towards (or away from) any name is a MASSIVE stretch. Just look at the videos they made about the rebrand. Add the Jonathan Allen "dogs on 3" huddle break video, with players howling. Look at every single online poll. And tell me Redwolves/Wolves is not a clear cut front runner at this point. If 75% of the fans want redwolves (and I am not saying they do) then being good stewards would include choosing the name redwolves. Lol. Yeah it's weird for me, before the name change I was as diehard that the name should not be changed as you could be. But after the initial shock, I have embraced it. I think the team, players and even some alumni support helped; definitely Rivera's steadfast commitment to the tradition and honor of the team, without high handedness around the change; and of course the team's 180 degree turn in professionalism all have helped me accept the name change. But honestly so did thinking the name will be Wolves (I don't care if it's red wolves) the Washington Wolves with the right branding is just an awesome name for a football team imo. Warthogs or Hogs is okay, better than many others but it is not as good as Wolves Sent from my SM-G973U using Tapatalk |
