Re: Chargers at WFT GameDay thread
I'm disappointed that we as fans have zero patience. We lose a close first game of the season to a very good team, and suddenly the d-line sucks, the linebackers suck, the O-line sucks, the QB sucks, the coaching sucks, the offseason moves sucked, if we had Moreland and Moses - somehow the outcome could have been different...
My assessment - the talent is there on both sides of the ball, but the offensive coordinator is just not good. We have 21 regular, post, and preseason games with him calling the plays and one opening drive TD. That's a large enough sample size for me. You can't continually lose the time of possession battle with a 2-1 ratio and expect the defense to hold up. If you are losing the time of possession battle 2-1, it better be because you are putting together quick scoring drives. That is not the case here. The offense can rarely sustain a drive. NINE possessions yesterday - 3 punts, 4 field goal attempts, 1 turnover, and 1 lone touchdown. It was a very winnable game, but you're not going to win a lot of games in the NFL with 16 points.
Initially I wanted to see more from Scott Turner but I'm starting to see enough - eventually you can't keep using the lack of talent as an excuse for lack of production. I agree with you in regards to the time of possession, it's hard to win when your d is out there twice as much as the offense. I disagree with you on the d though. They got worked from the first series of the game. One of those turnovers was a gift from the refs and the final score would not have been close if it was called correctly. 14 third downs converted is literally tied for the most we've ever given up - that's terrible. 14% pressure rate on dropbacks for Herbert - that's equally terrible. Not many qb's you can beat in this league where you aren't pressuring them at all. Yes - in spite of all that the final score was close. But we were the recipients of some very lucky calls yesterday. This team is not as close to being good as the final score indicates. |
The fumble was a killer no doubt. Felt like that took all the wind out of our sails. Huge turning point.
We are ignoring it a bit but it was absolutely a killer - you just can't turn the ball over that close to your own end zone. He had 2 fumbles yesterday too - the first went out of bounds. Ball security needs to be a point of emphasis in practice this week. |
Re: Chargers at WFT GameDay thread
I'm not sure why everyone is so surprised that we failed to get a lot of pressure on Herbert. Their O-line is mostly new, but pretty good. Slater had already shown that he can handle Chase. They probably have the best Center in the league. Herbert gets the ball out quickly... I did think we would get a better game from Sweat, but other than that, I didn't have real high expectations.

But more than that, I think that was a perfect time for a play action pass, the run call right there was terrible anyways. Scott Turner just needs to go. Sent from my SM-G973U using Tapatalk |

I think it's because people had low expectations for them based off limited snaps in preseason plus 4/5 starters being new - and the 5th is an old guy with injury problems in Bulaga. But I'm sure I'm not the only one who knew Slater handled CY99 very well in college. Other than him it was a group of unknowns. They definitely showed up well yesterday. |

Yeah and when you have a so called elite defense, at least that's what a lot of the experts have been calling us all offseason, you expect a little more. You certainly don't expect to give up 424 yards, 14/19 on 3rd downs, and let them have the ball from over 36 minutes. |
Re: Chargers at WFT GameDay thread
Yeah, overall I think expectations need to be tempered a little bit, but this can still be a good team, and a great defense. I just think that expecting this defensive line to wreak havoc on every possession every week just isn't reality. The D overall is very young, with a several new pieces. It might take a few games to really gel.
Like I've been saying, it's one game, against a very good team. There's 16 more games to go. R E L A X |

They literally got a FIRST DOWN on 3 & 16!!!! With the fucking game on the line... HOW????? K Allen is very good yes but he is not freaking Jerry Rice |
Re: Chargers at WFT GameDay thread

How the heck do you let the best WR on the field find a hole in your zone at 15 yards, just inexcusable. |

That is on both player and coach, it's actually laughable.. |
Re: Chargers at WFT GameDay thread
Situational awareness, something this team has always lacked. Lining up 18 yards deep when they only need 16 to get a first down. Defensive equivalent of throwing a 3rd and 6 pass 4 yds down field

Concur re: on players and coach. I'll say it again, JDR called a poor game yesterday. I see some folks are targeting, deservedly so, Scott Turner again. I've yet to be impressed by him either. Send him out to pasture. |
