It actually wouldn't surprise me that there are some conservatives/republicans who would support some aspects of the new health care law. My suspicion has always been that if the GOP ever took back control, they might not be able to resist ownership of Obamacare. They would shape it, mold it, -- in some way make it their own.

Let's face it, both the democrats and republicans are statists. Republicans less so, but only by degree. They want power over us just like the Dems do. We know this because when the GOP controlled the White House and both branches of the legislature, they gave us a new, incredibly expensive medical entitlement of their very own.

I'm sure one could read the 234,098,098,093 pages of the law we could find something that we would agree on.

Obama care hit a little bump in the road. If this holds up Obama care is done because it will not work unless everyone is forced into the system.

He's an asshat for sure.

The entire healthcare ruling will now come down to Justice Anthony Kennedy. Even then, I doubt the entire law will be struck down. Basically, even if they strip out the individ. mandate, that's what Obama campaigned on all along.

Re: Obama Care

I don't know the man but reading the article and knowing how the legal systems work it sounds as though it was shot down because the state of Virginia has no legal standing on the issue which is why it never got to the constitutionality part.

I'd bet if a common citizen filed the claim it would have passed to the second issue.... constitutionality.

SBXVII 09-08-2011 02:13 PM

Re: Obama Care

Just a guess but I would also bet the state of VA gets some sort of class action suit filed by several or hundreds of citizens in order to force the issue.

I'll agree with you in regards to "in the state", however not the biggest to hold a public office, clearly that goes to whom ever allowed the stupid bill to get passed in the first place.

I would say you can replace VA AG Kenneth Cuccinelli with POTUS Barrack Obama and state with country....

Im not really a fan of Cuccinelli but i am adamantly against Obamacare and highly respect him on his efforts. 2 of the 3 judges were appointed by Obama and the third was appointed by Clinton. This was the expected verdict, however; still a blow to getting this thing dismantled asap.
Everyone expects this issue to go to the Supreme Court and like SBXVII this ruling doesn’t sound like it was based on the constitutionality of the law, rather VA's right to challenge it (although I have no understanding on how to interpret this stuff).

im pretty happy with the free maryland state health care my pregnant lady is getting so far.

she got a call the other day from a program called "mommy and me" in which they offer pregnant women on the state plan a $10 gift certificate to walmart, target etc for every ob/gyn dental or flu vaccine visit they make. my lady was first kinda taken aback by the idea, then the lady explained that they needed to give pregnant women incentive to make their appointments and it sounded like it didnt really apply to her.

we signed up for target. hatte away but this is the fisrt govt assistance anything either of us have ever gotten and we have both paid plenty of taxes over the years . . .

The law was also upheld earlier this year in Cincinnati based on the ruling of a conservative judge appointed by George W. Bush.

I love Rick Perry's response in the debate last night on the issue of health care and why the state of Texas has the highest rate of uninsured Americans in the entire freakin country at 27.2%. That's an awful number by the way.

This moron actually blamed the Federal government for that sickening statistic.

Medicare covers 2.3 million Texans.
Medicaid covers 3.3 million Texans.

If you take away federal programs Texas would have a 40% uninsured population!

What the heck does the Republican party plan to do? For anyone?

It's a joke.

He's a funny guy for sure.

When asked about immigration he proposed beefing up border security with more boots on the ground (border patrol agents and the National Guard) and policing the border with Drone predators, essentially creating either a much larger agency or a new one. But no federal spending, God no. I'm sure the free market and unleashing our entrepreneurial spirit will solve our immigration problem. Can't have gubment blocking bidness.

He has good hair though.

You do realize that without the individ mandate his plan sty rockets the national dept? His plan will not work without the mandate because it funds the program. He needs the healthy uninsured to pay for the sick uninsured.

All I can say is if people wanted "free health care" then they should have moved to Canada. Why people and the Gov. thinks this is such a good option is beyond me, especially with so many Canadians taking vacations to America simply to get their health care needs met. Oh Canadians will tell you its not a bad system for small stuff like the common cold but god forbid you need surgery, your better off having Keiser.

Re: Obama Care

you guys do know that people on welfare (under 21k or something like that) and old people already have free health care.

this would only cover the people who make more than the welfare income limits but not enough money to allocate $300 a month to health insurance . . . .this basically just covers hard working people who dont make alot of money.

Good link, GM. This was a good move. But I wonder what will actually be left for SCOTUS to strike down, if they strike down anything at all?

Seems like Obama is finally getting the politics of how all of this going down. First they fast track the legislation to the Supreme Court, then he pulls the plug on a major part of the law. I say whatever can be done to make it better and less expensive for the taxpayer, I'm all for it.

Re: Obama Care

The Long Term Care Market is really a very different animal when it comes to insurance. Basically you have five carriers running the show: New York Life, Mass Mutual, Met Life, Northwestern Mutual, (NYL and NM are one and two), and Guardian.

But even a few of the big five are starting to jump ship and get out of the long-term care business because it's such a tough market to sustain profitability over time. So there's no way the government, with no brokers or agents pushing it's product, could compete with the major insurance carriers and their marketing machines.

This move was interesting on a few levels. CLASS represented 40% of the overall $210 billion in savings of deficit reduction over the next 10 yrs. Basically you do the math and the numbers change significantly. I wonder if CBO has to re-score the bill and projected savings.

Republicans are planning on having a hearing in the near future to see what took the White House so long to scrap the program. I'm very interested myself to hear the answer to that one.

The answer is that this bill, with his name attached no less, is generally a pretty crappy bill that got rammed through without enough work and input from all sides (blame game tonight at 11) leading to it being received rather negatively by a majority of the electorate. The ensuing battle over its future coincided with a relatively crappy economic year in which the POTUS has and is currently taking it in the pants popularity-wise. So dismantling parts of his signature bill probably seemed unwise politically until he basically had no choice. I know you know this but I thought maybe I'd save the tax payers some money since apparently the republicans don't already understand it. Otherwise why the hell would they waste the time and money to investigate something that is so obvious? They are equal dunces. If not more.
