Re: The "Inside Word" on the QB Search

Told you Clausen was going to be available.

That said, Derek Anderson is a FA and it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility that the Panthers let both go and bring back Clausen at a lower price.

But I doubt that happens. I thin Clausen is on another roster next year. Most speculate it would be the Broncos because of the John Fox connection

We wouldn't have to pay that $920K RB though. We'd sign him to a brand new contract.
Why do you call him "Clark Kent"?
Two reasons: One, he kinda looks like him, two I have this habit of fusing peoples names together. Ryan Clark, Clark Kent, Ryan Tannehill. Ergo Ryan "Clark Kent" Tannehill.

I think I would like to have Clausen as one of our 3 QB's next year. Still young and has not had much of an opportunity yet.
Some QBs just dont develop
DeAngelo Williams was hurt most of the year as well as J. Stewart andSteve Smith missed a couple of games. Add that to the fact that the OL didn't block well, and neither Olsen nor Shockey were on the team at the time of his rookie year. Not sure I would blame his "development" soley on Jimmy Clausen.

They didn't win only 2 games because JC played poorly.

Yeah I know I was just saying that RB is a lot for a 3rd stringer- prob a big factor in being close to cutting him.

But, a lot of people, myself included would gain a ton of respect for him if he does throw.

It would be great if all the top prospects started throwing at the combine.
I hope, like Cam Newton, all top QB prospects decide to throw from now on.

I agree. I remember a lot of fans liking him and thinking he would turn out pretty good. I wonder what happened? was it the coaching change? or the system. I wouldn't mind kicking the tires. He can't be any worse then Crompton.... can he?

The only negative I can see is if he's not ready or has not been working out, which I doubt is the problem. The other negative is him throwing to WR's he's not worked with and could make him look bad.

But does it really matter? If the Colts are set on taking Luck then it shouldn't matter if he sucks it up or if he comes out blazing. The Colts would be better served to tell him not to run the 40 so he doesn't hurt his foot or knee or hammie.
If the Vikings do land RGIII would Redskins fans be interested in modest trade for Ponder?
I would prefer Ponder to Sam Bradford. I thought Ponder displayed a better arm last year (maybe because of indoor home games?) than he did in college. He made all the throws. His problem was that he misread a lot of coverages as a rookie. Bradford's problems are more about physical limitation.

Really? I never really thought arm strength was Bradford's issue. Then again, I never really watched the Rams beyond the one Redskins game...
Really? I never really thought arm strength was Bradford's issue. Then again, I never really watched the Rams beyond the one Redskins game...
It's not arm strength that's the issue. It's not accuracy that's the issue. It's that the ball very often dives or sails on him when he's forced to quickly reset, which was pretty much all year this year because the Rams OL was trash.

Bradford is plenty smart enough to get it, but he came into the league really smart, and he's struggled to overcome himself, not to mention his own offense.

Ponder is far from a finished product, but he makes plays. Once he cuts the mistakes out, I think he'll be a very good pro starter. Ponder's problem is he's got to figure out a way to survive as a starter in this league even though the position prototype is shifting away from people who look like him. Bradford looks the part, but his obvious limitations always have me scratching my head as to how he got picked first overall ahead of Suh. Bradford needed a really strong offensive structure and system to be effective, and instead he got: the Rams.
...The other negative is him throwing to WR's he's not worked with and could make him look bad.
The only other negative you can think of 'looking bad' would be a rather large negative.
And that is the exact reason why most top QB prospects don't throw at the combine if they can get away with it and Luck certainly could.

If Luck chooses to compete in the throwing sessions at the combine he takes on the needless risk of being upstaged; the risk of not throwing or looking like the best QB prospect on the field.

Keep in mind I'm not saying the above will happen.
I'm just pointing out the chief 'negative' if Luck chooses to compete at the combine when he can wait til his pro-day.
Now, if Luck does choose to compete it will say a lot about his personality and competitive spirit; it will be ballsy.

I hope the kid goes out there and just grips it and rips it! let the cards fall where they may.
Go out there and show you've got nothing to hide.
Compete shoulder to shoulder with the other QB prospects.
It will continue a great precedent started by Cam Newton.

Of all the rookie quarterbacks, Weeden is by far the one most likely to be drafted by the Redskins.

I don't think he's their first choice though, but if choices one and two are off the board at 6th overall, then sure.

I don't want Weeden at #60 let alone #6! Maybe it's harsh and unreasonable but I have no use for a 28 year old rookie...

MTK 02-22-2012 04:28 PM

Re: The "Inside Word" on the QB Search

Nobody said anything about taking Weeden at #6 folks

from the link:

Here's an interesting theory I heard recently that makes some sense: Mike Shanahan loves Oklahoma State QB Brandon Weeden, who he coached in the Senior Bowl, and might try to trade down into the 20s of the first round to take him. Weeden is 28 and that scares a lot of teams, but he's mature and ready to play in the NFL right away, and the Redskins don't have time to wait around for someone to develop.

30gut 02-22-2012 04:35 PM

Re: The "Inside Word" on the QB Search

I like Weeden, he reminds me of a stronger armed Andy Dalton.
To me he makes sense in the second round range.

celts32 02-22-2012 04:38 PM

Re: The "Inside Word" on the QB Search

I remember the same stuff being said about Chris Weinke back when his old arse was coming into the league. He's mature and ready to play now. IMO if your not in the NFL then you are not learning how to play in the NFL. He may be older and mature in life but in the NFL he will still be a rookie and will be pushing 30 by the time he has any experience. No thanks...

That's more mature then the other two top flight QBs, can make all the throws they do? Again I'd take PM, trade back for more picks and take Weeden, and pick up a WR in round 2.

Dont worry guys, we're sending our 1st to NE for their 2 1st and a 2nd. Then sending that package plus our 2nd in 2012 and our 1st in 2013 for Indie's #1.

So 3 firsts and 2 second rounders for Luck.

Shanny has done a very good job making this team younger and better at a bunch of positions ince he took this job. His stubbornness at the QB position will be his downfall here I am afraid. He needs to get us a franchise QB, I do not care how, who or where he gets him. JUST DO IT!!!!
