Which gems? The statement is so speculative as to be silly. Only MS and BA really know why they went with the older guys. I am glad you got that telepathy working for you. Perhaps it was a simple stopgap while he assessed the lay of the land. Put some guys in he is familiar with to eliminate as many variables as possible to see what the real issues are. "Maybe they pan out, maybe they don't but at least I know these guys know what the pro game is about."

Seriously, who was on the roster that was cut and is a "gem" for some other team? Seems to me as the season progressed more and more youth was introduced into the team.

Clearly, mistakes were made but, you know what, it's year f'ing one. If the trend continues, I am on board with you. But for now, let's see how this guy rolls. He was handed a steaming pile of crap and I am sure the problems we saw on the field over the past few years are only the type fo the iceberg. This was a completely dysfunctional organization. Let's see what the plan is over a couple of years.

But you're right. He erred on some things and didn't win more games than he lost. So let's fire the MF, hire Fisher, change offensive and defensive philosophies again, etc. etc.

I want to know how anything can cost a team gems in the UDFA market? We didn't choose that undrafted star qb, because we signed McNabb? If we hadn't gotten Brown, we would have kept the perfect UDFA RT?

After three years, they all would likely beecome ineffective and we would need to replace them again. That's why I said his strategy was "win soon" the past offseason. He believed those old guys go provide enough to win it all before age hit them about three years from last offseason. You bring in short-term players to finish the puzzle, not start it. If he really wanted to "win in a couple of years and then keep on winning for many years after that", he would have been scouring the planet for as many good long-term players as he could find.

There's at least some CHANCE(7% or less) that they'll be a stud. The probability of McNabb or Brown being good 5 years from now is [B]0.00001%, give or take[/B]. And that's just the cost of a roster spot, not the picks given up for them.

Antonio Dixon? Yeah, we put him on the practice squad. Where is he now? Oh yeah, on the Eagles as a starter.

We could have lost Austin or Banks as well.

Lol, any team that gets Fischer as a DC will be extremely lucky. Fisher is a head coach and he'll have his pick of the litter when he's ready to work again. Either way some team is going to pay him a lot of money to work for them.

Not necessarily. You bring in veteran guys that have been mildly successful in the league to challenge any new blood that you bring into the franchise. Those veteran guys push those rookies and second year players, mentor them and shape them into better players. There were A LOT of holes to be filled, more holes than we had draft picks for. It is unrealistic to think that you're going to rebuild each and every position or at least 80% of the roster with rookies and second year guys all within a year, because the team just didn't have the draft picks.

Sure, Shanahan wanted to win as soon as possible. Why would any NFL coach not want to win as soon as possible? I wouldn't respect the coach if he didn't do whatever he thought was necessary to get the team in a position to win right away. It sometimes works, and it sometimes doesn't, but having those veterans at least serve as on field, game action, coaches for the young guys and that is a very valuable tool to have. And, if MS didn't think the veterans were getting the job done, he would cut them.

Again, I think you are missing the fact that this team was 4-12 in 2009, not 12-4. There is/was A LOT for MS to do in order to turn this team around. Look, the team got progressively younger toward the end of the season. We've seen young guys step up and perform rather well. You're just going to have to be patient with this coaching regime or either go be a Baltimore Ravens fan or something.
