Just want to repeat….they have decided on the name. The “3” finalists include a plan B and plan C in the event the vetting of their choice somehow fell apart. But they have it. I don’t know what it is but I do know that it’s not WFT.

You have to think that there is a lot of information out there already and I am amazed it hasn't leaked. No way they keep it private until the release.

Someone somewhere has to be printing up the new signage for the stadium and headquarters, NFL would have to have approved it, apparel manufacturers notified for new logos and names. Would be a miracle if it did not leak before the new year.

A few others on Twitter that are pretty dialed in to the team have also been saying Commanders for a while now.

Washington Commanders is a solid team name. But a rather long name when including both words.

Definitely better than 95% of the other names I've heard. I would have zero complaints with that name.

If that is the case eventually I'll accept it but right now it feels weak to me.

This is the way now though. Sport teams can't be named after certain things anymore, it's gotta be something generic and non-offensive. Kraken is the only name to come out in the last several years that bucks that trend imo.

Still, a winning record and tough team to play will go a long way in helping us accept the name. If they are called Commanders and we get our asses beat every other week it will be one more thing to rip on Dan for around the league.

Commanders is ok, I like Commandos better, but alas that is not the choice.

Commanders seems like it will have to be forced when it comes to the imagery and mascot. I can see it working in the DMV but it is also awfully militaristic, but maybe that's not an issue?

How they should handle it is just shut up and don't say anything. They're trying to string along the fans and create a buzz and it's kinda drained itself out. I really don't even care at this point. The name change is dead to me.

It is like putting out the ashes of the fire, you have to get it completely out or it will reignite. In this case I am talking about reigniting passion around Redskins.

Agreed. Weirdly enough I think both can be true:
-they want to create [I][U][U]expectations and anticipation[/U][/U][/I] about the new name so when it's released it's talked about.
-they are consciously making it last longer than needed, so people get [I][U]tired of it[/U][/I] and even the most adamant anti-name change and those who had a strong preference different than their final choice go "meh, at least we finally have a new name and can move on" and [I][U]accept it[/U][/I] (to various degrees and after various amounts of time).

I don't want us to use another name of a major sports team, ala Warriors. But I don't think you can worry about if some random B-league team or minor league team or semi-pro team uses the name of has used the name previously. There are thousands of these teams, you would never be able to use any name then.

Fair point.
I wasn't talking in terms of legal issues, I think those are manageable (and one of the reasons they're taking so much time).
But it terms of image, I don't know how great it looks to pick a name from a random B league that went bankrupt in a couple of months. To that, you could say it wouldn't mean anything 50 years from now, but I still think they don't want be laughed at in 2022.

Right I know that's the San Antonio logo, just saying we shouldn't have an issue doing better than that.

They were barely around for a hot minute, I would doubt that most fans would even know they had a team there.

Its actually a pretty good logo. It has the Alamo and a lone star for TX. The sword isn't a generic sword, it represents the sword Col William Travis used to draw a line in the sand prior to the Alamo battle.

I definitely think it will either be red wolves or Commanders. To me Commanders feels like the smoke screen because you hear the "sources" talk attached to it, but when you look at the videos the obvious underlying tone is for redwolves.

My biggest issue with Commanders is it is simply too long. Sorry but chants and cheers use 1 to 2 syllables.

How do you shorten or chant with Commanders? Serious question because that is a huge part of the marketing they will need to do.

To me it looks like a generic logo from Madden when you move your franchise to another city. But either way I think a NFL team should do better.
